장애인식개선 교양 교과목 수강을 통한 대학생의 장애태도 변화 (Changes in University Students’ Attitudes Toward Disabilities Through a Liberal Arts Course on Disability Awareness)

초록

연구목적: 본 연구는 장애인식개선 교양 교과목을 수강한 대학생을 대상으로 장애인에 대한 태도 변화가 어떠한지 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 연구방법: P대학의 교양과목으로 개설된 장애인식개선 강좌를 수강한 대학생 53명을 대상으로 양적․질적 조사를 실시하였다. 먼저 대학생의 수강 전․후 장애인에 대한 정량적 태도 변화를 알아보기 위해 학기 초와 학기 말에 장애태도검사를 실시하여 결과를 분석하였고, 소감문, 에세이, 개방형 질문지를 통해 장애에 대한 대학생의 정성적 태도변화를 질적으로 분석하였다. 연구결과: 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학생의 정량적 장애태도 변화는 수강 이후 긍정적으로 향상되었고, 하위 유형인 일반적 거부, 추론된 정서적 결과, 타기능의 제한, 친교의 거부, 접촉 시 긴장에서 수업 전․후 유의미한 차이를 나타냈다. 둘째, 대학생의 정성적 장애태도 변화는 ‘긴장과 걱정에서 존중과 포용의 마음으로’ 감정적 태도가 변화하였고, ‘무관심, 왜곡에서 성장과 확장적 사고로’ 인지적 태도가 변화하였으며, ‘지나친 의식과 회피에서 적극적인 실천의 행동으로’ 행동적 태도가 변화하였다. 결론: 장애인식개선 교양 교과목은 대학생의 장애에 대한 이해와 수용에 긍정적인 영향을 주었으며 장애태도 개선에 효과적임을 알 수 있다. 장애인과 함께 더불어 살아가는 포용사회를 이루기 위해 대학 기반 교양강좌 개발에 중요한 시사점을 확인하였고 대학생의 장애태도 개선을 위해 필요한 방안을 논의하였다.

영어초록

Purpose: This study seeks to investigate how university students’ attitudes toward individuals with disabilities change after taking a liberal arts course on disability awareness. Method: A mixed-methods study was conducted with 53 university students enrolled in a disability awareness course offered as a liberal arts subject at University P. Quantitative changes in students’ attitudes were assessed by administering a disability attitude test at the beginning and end of the semester, with the results statistically analyzed. Qualitative changes in attitudes were examined through content analysis of reflections, essays, and responses to open-ended questionnaires. Result: The study derived the following findings: First, the quantitative attitude of university students toward disabilities positively improved after taking the course. Significant differences were observed before and after the course in the subcategories of general rejection, inferred emotional consequences, restriction of other abilities, rejection of intimacy, and tension during contact. Second, the qualitative changes in students’ attitudes were characterized by an emotional shift from tension and worry to respect and inclusion. Cognitively, attitudes changed from indifference and distortion to growth and expansive thinking. Behaviorally, attitudes shifted from excessive awareness and avoidance to proactive practice. Conclusion: The disability awareness liberal arts course positively influenced university students’ understanding and acceptance of disabilities, thereby demonstrating its effectiveness in improving attitudes toward disabilities. This study identified significant implications for developing university-based liberal arts courses to foster an inclusive society that embraces individuals with disabilities. Additionally, the necessary strategies to enhance university students’ attitudes toward disabilities were discussed.
