초록

12세기 유명론의 철학사적 독특성은 아리스토텔레스의 형이상학적 저작 없이 논리학적 저작을 중심으로 한 접근이었다는 점에 있다. 하지만 이러한 상황은 역으로 12세기 유명론의 지적 성취를 특징짓는 조건이기도 한다.
12세기 유명론의 대표자인 아벨라르두스(1079-1142)의 입장을 이전의 접근방식으로부터 갈라내는 것은 사물과 사태 혹은 의미 사이의 구별인 것으로 보인다. 서로 구별되는 개인들이 ‘사람에서(homo) 일치하는 것이 아니라 ‘사람임’(esse hominem)에서 일치한다’는 주장이 사람과 사람임 사이의 구별에 근거하고 있다. 우리는 이 구별에서 이 보편 문제에 관한 존재론적 판본으로부터 의미론적 판본으로의 이행을 볼 수 있다고 생각한다.
이 구별을 이해하기 위해서는 유사한 다른 구별들을 이해하는 것이 도움이 될 것이다. 가능성이나 필연성과 같은 양상을 표현하는 문장의 해석에서 사물 해석과 대비되는 의미 해석은 특정한 논리적 연관 하에서 파악한 ‘의미’를 전제한다. ‘악이 존재하는 것은 선이다’(bonum est malum esse)라는 문장에서처럼 사태(eventus rei)에도 ‘선’이 귀속될 수 있지만 사태는 사물이 아니다. 사람과 사람임 사이의 구별은 이러한 구별들로부터 이해될 수 있다. ‘사람임’은 아벨라르두스가 강조하듯 사물이 아니며, 한 개체와 그것이 갖는 특정한 모습과의 연관으로 구성된다. 이 연관, 이 사태에서 모든 개인들이 일치하며 이것이 보편명사 ‘사람’이 모든 개인들에게 적용되는 이유이다.
이렇게 설명될 때 사물과 구별된다고 주장된 ‘의미’ 혹은 ‘사태’가 정확히 무엇이며, 어떤 종류의 존재론적, 인식론적, 의미론적 가정들이 이러한 설명 뒤에 있는지는 향후 연구들이 해결해야 할 과제이다.

영어초록

To understand the 12th century nominalism, one sould keep in mind the historical circumstance in regard to the reception of Aristotle. Aristotle’s metaphysical writings were not available to that time. This is one of the reasons why the discussion of universals in that century took place so strongly in the logico-semantical framework. At the same time, it is precisely this historical situation that makes the theoretical achievements of the 12th century nominalists so unique in the history of philosophy.
The most distinctive feature in the nominalism of Abelard (1079-1142) seems to lie in its contrast between things (res) and state-of-affairs (eventus rei). His claim that while individual men like Socrates and Plato cannot agree (convenire) in ‘man’, they agree rather in ‘being a man’, bases on the distinction between ‘man’ (homo) and ‘being a man’ (esse hominem). We can see in this distinction a significant transition from the ontological version to the semantical version of the problem of universals.
To understand this distinction, it will be helpful to bring some other distinctions into discussion. The de sensu (dicto) interpretation, in contrast to the de re interpretation of sentences with modal terms postulates a sense (sensus) that consists of things under certain logical conditions. The state-of-affairs (eventus rei) is not a thing (res), but to that state-of-affairs the term ‘good’ can be attributed, as is in the sentence, ‘it is good that there is evil’ (bonum est malum esse). The crucial contrast between ‘man’ and ‘being a man’ could be understood in these series of distinctions. ‘Being a man’ is not a thing, but a state-of-affair which consists of an individual person and its connection with something common, or a sense-unit, which considers an individual person as a bearer of certain common features. This is the ground in which individual men agree and is the reason why the name ‘man’ is invented and applied to all the individual man.
What exactly are these sensus or state-of-affairs, and what sort of ontological, epistemological, semantical assumptions lie behind this explanation, are the subjects for further investigations.
