極廟에서 郊祀로―秦·漢 國家祭祀의 변화와 지속― (From Jimiao(Temple for Polar Star) to Jiaosi(Pantheon): Change and Continuation of National Sacrifice in Qin and Han Empire)

초록

國家祭祀는 商 이래의 역대 中國 왕조에서 모두 君主의 先祖와 그 밖의 自然神에 대한 것으로 양분되었고, 自然神 중에서 각 시기마다 가장 높다고 여겨진 神을 君主의 先祖와 함께 君主가 직접 祭祀지냄으로써 그 권위를 절대화하는 것이 일반적이었다. 秦 帝國은 自然神 중 천상의 중심인 天極과 秦의 先帝를 묶은 極廟를 세움으로써 秦 皇帝의 권위를 극대화하였고, 모든 縣級 行政 單位마다 그 분신인 廟를 세움으로써 天下를 일관하는 國家祭祀를 완성하였다. 漢 帝國은 漢 皇帝의 지배 영역을 넓혀가면서 그 영역 안의 自然神도 장악해나갔고, 天下의 自然神을 漢 皇帝의 거처로 집중시켜 체계화하고, 그 정점인 天·地에 高祖를 配祀하는 방식으로 國家祭祀를 만들어갔다. 漢 皇帝가 親祭하는 郊祀, 使者가 책임진 五嶽·四瀆, 方士가 책임진 郡·國의 自然神은 이렇게 완성되었다. 秦 帝國이 先帝 崇拜를 기반으로 天下를 秦 皇帝의 것으로 만드는데 집중하였다면, 漢 帝國은 天下 그 자체를 漢 皇帝가 아우르는데 매진하였다고 할 수 있다. 先帝를 중심으로 한 秦 帝國의 國家祭祀가 몰락하고, 自然神으로 天下를 아우르는 漢 帝國의 國家祭祀가 이후 계속된 왕조 교체에도 불구하고 마지막 정통 왕조인 淸까지 이어질 수 있었던 이유는 그것이 天下를 온전히 표상하였기 때문일 것이다. 天下의 장악이 곧 帝國에 의한 통일적 지배의 실체라면, 그것을 표상하는데 郊祀를 중심으로 한 國家祭祀보다 적당한 것은 없을 것이다. 이것은 儒敎가 홀로 성취하거나 창작한 것이 아니라, 秦의 戰國 통일 이후 前漢 初 이래의 역사적 경험을 바탕으로 帝國을 지탱할 수 있는 國家祭祀의 틀을 고민하였던 역대 여러 皇帝와 巫·祝, 方士, 官吏 등 다종다양한 계층의 인물들이 함께 만들어낸 작품이었다.

영어초록

The national divines of traditional China is divided into the ancestors of the monarchs and other natural gods since Shang(商) Dynasty. It was common to absolutize their authority by ritual that the monarch directly sacrificed the god considered the highest at each period with the ancestors of the monarchs. Qin(秦) Empire sets jimiao(Temple for Polar Star) that is combined with tianji(Polar Star) and the ancestors of Qin Emperor to maximize the authority of the Qin Emperor. By standing, Qin Empire built a branch of Jimiao called miao(Temple) in every prefecture. National Sacrifice of Qin Empire thus completed throughout tianxia(the World). The Han(漢) Empire expanded the Han Emperor's territory, and also seized the natural gods in that territory. The natural gods of tianxia were concentrated and systematized in the whereabouts of the Han Emperor. National sacrifice was created in a way that sacrifices the Heaven(天) and the Earth(地) together with Goazu(高祖, the First Emperor of Han Empire). jiaosi(Pantheon) which Han Emperor directly sacrifices, Five Mountains(五嶽) and Four Rivers(四瀆) where the shizhe(Messenger) was responsible, and the natural gods of the counties(郡) and states(國) where the fangshi(Priest) was responsible were completed in this way. It can be said that Qin Empire concentrated on the whole Tianxia owned to Qin Emperor based on the Worship for Emperor’s Ancester, but Han Empire concentrated on Tianxia itself in Han Emperor’s inclusion. The reason that Qin Empire’s was collapsed but Han Empire’s has been still alive until the last Chinese traditional empire Qing(淸) is that Han Empire’s national sacrifice have been able to fully represent the whole Tianxia. If the seizure of the whole Tianxia is an entity of unified rule by the empire, it will not be more appropriate than a national sacrifice centered on Jiaosi that it represents. This is not something that Confucians achieved or created alone, but emperors, wu(Shaman)·zhu(Magician), fangshi(Priest), and Officials who were thinking about the framework of the national sacrifice that could support the Empire based on the historical experience since the beginning of the Chinese Empire.
