판화란 무엇인가? (What is a Print?)

초록

이 논문은 판화에 대한 것으로 그림에 관한 질문이다. 많은 사람들이 판화는 회화와의 관계에서 창조적인 지평으로부터 소외된 것으로 잘못 알고 있다. 판화는 단지 단색으로 찍어내는 단순한 복제쯤으로 알고 있다는 것이다. 어디까지나 판화는 점을 찍는 행위와 선을 긋는 것, 그리고 면을 드러내거나 빠른 붓놀림으로 담아내어 표현된 회화성을 넘는 질료들을 포괄하고 있다는 것을 알아야 한다. 또한 존재에 대한 근원적인 사유에 해당하는 철학적인 용어이기도 하다.
판화는 이미지를 생성하는 과정을 몸으로 담고 있으며 이러한 시지각적 생산들을 소통시키고 조합하는 매커니즘을 갖고 있다. 특히 미술가가 창조적 과정에서 겪는 사고의 지평을 판화의 순간으로 대체해 보면 판화는 그리는 행위를 말하는 명백한 단어이다. 이러한 것을 설명하기 위해서 Ⅰ장의 서론은 표현의 과정을 다루게 된다. Ⅱ장 이미지 흔적의 과정은 판화가 관념이 시작되는 사물과의 대립각으로부터 생성되는 것이고 양자간에 이루어지는 마주보기로 설정된다. 첫째로 판화의 매개를 다루기 위해 거울장치의 예를 든다. 둘째로는 콜라주와 사물을 기술하면서 판화가 장치로서 현대미술에 개입되는 상황을 설명한다. Ⅲ장은 중첩된 판화로 이미지가 지표라는 구조를 만들어내는 창조적 역할을 미술사의 관점에서 강조한다. 후기모더니즘 시기 있었던 회화가 탈 신체를 통해 지각이 강조된 측면을 다룬다. Ⅳ장은 불가능한 가능성의 판화를 포스트모던을 다루었던 방식들로 살펴보는 것이다. 결국 판화가 표현성에 입각하여 그림에 이바지함을 매체 특정적 회화로 주장하고자 하는 것이다. Ⅴ장은 결론으로 포스트모던 이후를 가능하게 하는 그림을 표방함으로써 판화가 21세기에 새로운 매체의 회화로 활약할 것을 창조적인 관점에서 주장할 것이다.
판화는 모든 장르에 걸쳐져 있는 특수한 촉매회화라는 용어이다. 미술이 단지 나타난 형식만으로 내용을 결정하고자하는 모더니티의 특성만을 고려함이 아니라면 모든 창조적 과정들이 관념의 씨앗으로부터 싹이 난다는 것과 개별적 입장들이 동시에 공존하게 될 창조의 마당이 되는 포스트모던 이후를 바란다면 판화적 방법이 중심이 된 그림은 더욱 풍부함을 갖게 될 것이다. 특히 동시대미술이 사고와 표현의 공존을 더욱더 중요하게 여긴다는 것을 안다면 그린다는 행위 속에 내포된 절대정신과 몸을 통해 기록되는 모든 표현들은 판화라는 용어로 대체될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This study is a straightforward question about what a print is. Many people have an incorrect conception of printmaking, considering it as something alienated from the creative work in relationships with painting. In other words, a print is misunderstood as a simple copy produced in monochrome. However, it is crucial to realize that a print embraces matters beyond the nature of paintings depicted by such activities as putting dots, drawing lines, creating planes and skilled brushstrokes. It is also a philosophical term relevant to the fundamental reasoning of existence.
A print incorporates the process of creating images and includes the mechanism of communicating and combining such visual-perceptual creations. In particular, if the prospect of an artist’s thought during the process of creation is applied to the moment of printmaking, a print is a word clearly indicating the act of drawing. In order to explain this, the process of expression is presented in the introduction of Chapter I. In Chapter II, the process of image trace, a print is described as the output of the stance opposite to objects from which an idea comes into existence and explained as facing each other between both sides. At first, this study presents a mirror device as an example to deal with the medium of print. Secondly, it explains the circumstances where printmaking is involved with modern art as a method, describing collages and objects. In Chapter III, the creative role of duplicated print images to make an index structure is emphasized in the context of art history. This study also mentions the post-modernism paintings’ emphasis on perception through focusing on objects beyond human body. Chapter IV focuses on describing prints of impossible possibility in the ways dealing with post modernism. What I suggest is that printmaking is a medium-specific art form contributing to paintings based on expressivity. Chapter V is the conclusion, in which I present a creative perspective that prints will play a role of a new medium of painting in the 21st century opening a new realm of painting beyond the post-modern period.
The term of a print refers to a special catalytic painting that embraces all types of art genres. Given that fine arts does not simply mean the characteristics of modernity where the content is decided by only expressed form, the entire creative processes sprout from the seed of idea and people desire the creative period after the post modernism where individual stances co-exist at the same time, printmaking methods will impart more richness to paintings. Furthermore, the absolute idea implicit in the act of drawing and the entire expressions recorded by body can be substituted by the term of print if it is considered that the contemporary fine arts puts more emphasis on the coexistence of thought and expression.
