초록

본 논문은 ‘개인주의’ 경향이 심화되는 한국사회에서 공공성과 사회 전체 감각을 고양시켜 주는 사고체계의 매커니즘을 이해하는 데 목적이 있다. 세월호는 그동안 축적된 한국의 사회적 모순을 그대로 노출시키면서, 사적세계에 과잉 몰입한 개인들이 공적 영역으로 사고체계를 전환하는 계기가 된 사건으로 평가된다. 본 연구는 개인주의 문화가 팽배한 사회에서 대규모 집회의 도화선이 된 세월호 사건을 통해 개인주의의 양가성에 대한 화두를 도출하였다. 사적세계에서 공적세계로 전환되는 사고체계는 개인주의 개념이 담고 있는 상호 모순적 특성과 강한 상관관계가 존재할 것이라는 가정 하에, 개인주의 연구를 주로 수행해 온 문화심리학과 근대 사회학 분야의 논의들을 비교 검토하였다. 개인주의 이론이 발전되는 과정에서 두 개 분과학문은 근대(modernity) 개념의 포괄 여부에 따라 분명한 차이가 존재한다는 결론에 천착하였다. 두 분과학문의 논의를 비교함으로써, 현대 한국의 경험세계에서 가시적으로 발현한 개인주의의 양가성은, 근대 개념을 배제시켜 온 문화심리학 분과의 연구물로는 충분히 설명할 수 없는 한계를 지적하고, 사회학적 전통에서 근대성을 기반으로 발전한 개인주의 이론의 필요를 환기하였다. 본 논문에서 세월호 사건 그 자체를 연구대상으로 삼았다기보다는, 개인주의의 양가성 개념과 공공성으로의 전환적 사고체계의 연결 가능성에 대한 연구 질문을 갖게 된 출발점이 되었다. 본 연구는 세월호 사건을 계기로 부상된 공적 세계관으로의 전환 가치를 모색함에 있어 사회학적 논의가 필요함을 환기하고, 아울러 한국의 사례를 보편적인 사회 사상사적 관점에서 이해해 보려는 의미를 담고 있다.

영어초록

This article aims to explore the core values ​​that help to enhance ‘a sense whole’ and ‘publicity’ in society, based on the Korean experience world where the individualism tendency get strong. The Sewol ferry incident visualized the possibility of ‘individual solidarity’, which was created by the clustering of ‘the self’ reflection of fragmented individuals. The ambivalence of individualism, which emerged as an important issue in the process of reflecting on the contradictions of Korean society projected after the Sewol ferry accident, is connected to the concept of modern ‘individualism (privatization)’ developed by major modernism theorists. Therefore, by interpreting the Sewol ferry incident on the universal historical view of modern individualism, this study analyzed the discourse and the results of behaviors that has been revealed the contradictory features of the individualism concept after the incident. In addition, the concept of the post-material values, ‘the sense of human rights and freedom’, which major modern theorists discussed as a common alternative to overcome the disruption of modern individualism, was drawn as an alternative value to revitalize the publicity of Korean society. Based on the theoretical discussion including analysis comparing between the cross-cultural psychology and modernism sociology, I proposed a converting idea derived by exploring the relevance between ‘self-esteem’ belonging to individualism and ‘public life’ beyond the individual reductionism. Korean modern society that tend to be ‘individualism’, illuminated by Sewol, has a high risk of mass-producing fragmented individuals who have forgotten their community, while (in the hopeful sense) of the mutually contradictory nature of ‘collectivism culture’ It carries the possibility of simultaneous expression. The significance of this article is that it is an attempt to apply to a suitable alternative to restore publicity by exploring the value that enhances the sense of whole (society) in the intrinsic characteristics of ‘individualism’ through an empirical event of actual Korean society.
