설문대 할망 창조 여신설 검토 (The Reexamination of the Idea of “the Old Woman of Sŏlmundae” as the Goddess of Creation)

초록

제주 설화 속 여성 거인 ‘설문대 할망’이 제주도의 창조 여신이라는 주장은 현재 학계의 보편화된 통설이다. 그러나 이에 대한 소수의 반론이 없지 않은바, 본고는 ‘설문대 할망 창조 여신설’을 뒷받침해 온 몇 가지 근거를 재검토함으로써 학술적 입론으로서의 정합성을 따져 보았다. 설문대 할망이 천지를 분리하고 제주 섬을 창조했다는 근거로 제시된 설화 각편에서 분리와 창조의 실제 주체는 설문대 할망이 아니라 별개의 인물이고, 조선 시대 설문대 할망이 여신으로 믿어졌다는 근거로 제시되어 온 장한철의 『표해록(漂海錄)』에 기록된 ‘선마(詵麻)’는 설문대 할망과 동일 인물이라는 근거가 미흡하며, 설문대 할망이 산신굿의 제향 대상이었다는 근거로 제시되곤 하는 장주근 채록의 무가 자료와 이성준의 조사 자료는 두 자료 모두 설문대 할망이 의례의 대상임을 분명하게 제시하고는 있지 않음을 지적했다. 마지막으로, 여성 거인 창세신이 주변 민족 신화에서도 일반적으로 나타난다는 입장은 오키나와의 사례가 반례가 될 수 있음을 들었다. 이에 따라, 설문대 할망이 제주의 창조 여신이었다는 학술적 입론은 정설로 자리하기에는 논리적 근거가 충분치 않다고 보았다. 그렇다고 해서 본고의 결론이 설문대 할망이 창조 여신이 아니라는 데 이르지는 않는다. 이즈미 세이치(泉精一)가 채록한 자료는 ‘설문대 할망 창조 여신설’의 한 근거가 될 가능성이 있다. 한편 이 자료는 설문대 할망이 제주의 토착신이 아니라 외래신(外來神)이었을 가능성도 보여주고 있다. 따라서 본고는 ‘설문대 할망 창조 여신설’이 정설이 되려면 더 많은 논의가 필요함을 주장하고, 설문대 할망 설화를 대상으로 하는 연구가 다각도로 진행되어야 함을 구체적 과제와 함께 제안하였다.

영어초록

It is a widely acknowledged idea that “the old woman of Sŏlmundae,” a female giant featured in folktales of Jeju Island, indicates the goddess who created Jeju Island. A small number of scholars, however, have presented counterarguments. This article reflects upon the validity of the conventional understanding of “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” as the goddess of creation by reexamining a number of materials that have been used to support such an understanding. First, I argue that in the folktales that scholars have been using to support that “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” was believed to separate heaven and earth and created Jeju Island, the subject of separation and creation in those tales is in fact not “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” but different character. Second, scholars argue that “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” has been recognized as a goddess since the Chosŏn period by suggesting that the term “sŏnma 詵麻” mentioned in A Record of Drifting across the Sea 漂海錄(1771) by Chang Han-chŏl indicates “the old woman of Sŏlmundae.” I argue that such a suggestion is not verifiable. Third, existing studies acknowledge the records of shamanistic rites transcribed by Chang Chu-gŭn and Yi Sŏng-jun as the evidence supporting the idea that “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” was traditionally the object of ritual rite for the mountain spirits. My examination of those two materials, however, reveals that they do not specifically indicate “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” as the object of rite. I argue, in sum, that the conventional understanding that “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” is the goddess of creation is not verified sufficiently by the remaining documents. That does not mean that “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” is not definitely the goddess of creation. The records transcribed by a Japanese scholar, Izumi Sēich(泉靖一), can be used as supporting evidence for the idea of “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” as the goddess of creation. It also indicates the possibility that “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” is not an indigenous goddess of Jeju Island but a goddess of foreign origin. This article suggests that the idea of “the old woman of Sŏlmundae” as the goddess of creation calls for more investigation from various perspectives.
