다문화 평생교육의 정립을 위한 체험적-호혜적 운영 원리 탐색 (Toward New Horizon of Multicultural Education As an Experiential and Reciprocal Life-long Education)

초록

최근 우리 사회에는 해외 이주자의 급격한 유입이라는 결코 작지 않은 변화가 포착되고 있으며, 이러한 추세는 앞으로도 계속될 것으로 예견되고 있다. 이 점에서 우리 사회도 이제 다문화사회의 특징을 지니게 되었다고 할 수 있으며, 이와 관련하여 다문화교육이 새로운 교육적 이슈로 제기되고 있다. 그러나 현재 추진되고 있는 다문화교육을 검토해보면, 아직 그것이 시작 단계임을 감안한다 하더라도, 그것이 궁극적으로 겨냥해야 할 다문화주의의 구현에 적지 않은 한계점을 지니고 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 이 연구에서 연구자는 그러한 한계점들이 다문화교육의 조망과 기획이 전통적인 학교교육식 관행 및 접근에서 시도되었기 때문에 초래된 것이라는 점을 지적하고, 그것이 평생교육의 관점에서 새롭게 도모되어야 할 필요가 있음을 논증하였다. 그리고 더 나아가 다문화교육이 새롭게 따라야 할 두 가지 운영 원리를 탐색, 제시하였는데, 문화에 대한 언어적 전달 및 습득 이전에 삶 속에서 다양한 양태로 전개되는 문화적 체험의 가치를 강조하는 체험적 다문화 평생교육의 원리와 상이한 문화 집단 간 자유로운 교류교육의 필요성을 강조한 호혜적 다문화 평생교육의 원리가 제시되었다.

영어초록

Korean society has been changing from unicultural society to multicultural society for the past few years. It is a remarkable phenomenon since Korean has been proud of its long history of pure race and uniculture. In this respect multicultural society can be considered to be a threat to Korean unicultural tradition. But this cultural threat can be changed into a valuable challenge or opportunity to give Korean society new ways to critically reflect and improve its traditional culture. Multicultural education has caught many Korean's attention as a proper response to cultural changes in Korea.
But Korea's multicultural education has some problems to be solved for removing Korean cultural weakness and rigidness. First, multicultural education can be possible just in case it works as a life-long education in everyday life situation. Culture can not be taught through only verbal explanations and understanding, but experiential understanding by participating into everyday life situation. Second, experiential multicultural life-long education should be reciprocal and cooperative education that every groups can freely teach their cultures and learn other cultures in everyday life situation. But multicultural education now be considered only an educational program in Korea to help immigrants from different countries adapt themselves to Korean culture.
This study is to discuss the multicultural education should be understood as a form of life-long education and it is based on the principles that multicultural life-long education should provide Korean with experiential understanding different cultures in everyday life situation and opportunities to use different cultures as a kind of remedy to cure Korean culture's rigidness. This study is far from satisfaction, but has worth as a stimulus to encourage continuing academic discussions about multicultural education in the broad perspective of life-long education.
