다문화시대 신화의 가치와 의미 (The Values and Meanings of Myths in the Multicultural Society)

초록

이 논문은 다문화시대에 민족갈등을 유발하는 단일민족주의의 폐해를 극복하기 위한 하나의 방안으로 다문화적 관점에서 신화에 대한 해석과 새로운 가치를 규명하고자 한 것이다.
한국사회는 급격하게 다문화사회로 이행하고 있다. 이 과정에서 다양한 문화가 혼재되기도 하고, 문화 간의 충돌이 일어나기도 한다. 이러한 시대에 기존의 단일민족주의에 기반 한 신화 해석은 타자에 대한 배척과 갈등을 유발할 수 있다. 따라서 신화의 보편성에 초점을 맞추어 민족주의 이데올로기를 극복하고, 신화에 내재된 보편적 원형과 신화적 상징으로 공존과 융합의 가치를 모색해야 한다.
건국신화는 건국 시조의 신성성과 국가의 정당성이 강조되는 신화이기 때문에 연대와 통합의 시각에서 해석할 필요가 있다. 건국신화를 통합의 서사로 해석하면 단군신화의 경우 환웅과 웅녀의 결합은 타자가 주체에 일방적으로 동화되는 것이 아니라 주체와 타자 모두 기존의 자기정체성을 변화시키면서 새로운 연대와 통합에 이르는 것으로 분석할 수 있다.
또한 주류 신화에서 소외된 타자를 중심으로 하는 신화 해석이 요청된다. 특히 남성 건국주체 중심의 건국신화에서 소외된 女神 중심의 무속신화를 주목해야 한다. 바리공주의 경우는 아버지로 상징되는 남성 중심 질서를 회복하기 위해 저승에 약수를 구하러 간다. 이것은 표면적으로 보면 바리공주가 주체의 질서를 유지하기 위해 자신을 희생하는 것 같지만, 바리공주는 자기부정과 희생으로 타자와 주체의 관계를 해체하고 포용과 화해를 통한 새로운 연대를 이루어내는 것이다.
신화는 상징을 통해 세계를 이야기하기 때문에 다양한 해석이 가능하다. 다문화시대라는 변화한 환경을 맞이하여 기존의 민족주의적 관점을 극복하는 다문화적 해석이 필요하다. 신화에 내재된 문화적 다양성과 통합과 화해의 가치를 주목해야 하고, 이를 바탕으로 주체와 타자의 조화로운 공존을 모색해야 한다.

영어초록

This study set out to find new interpretations and values for myths from the multicultural perspective as a way to overcome the evil practices of unity nationalism that could cause racial conflicts in the multicultural Society.
Korean society is moving fast toward a multicultural society, in which process diverse cultures are present in confusion and face each other in a clash. In such an age, myth interpretations based on the old unity nationalism can cause alienation of others and conflicts. Thus it is required to overcome nationalist ideology by focusing on the universality of myths and understand the world based on the universal archetypes and mythological symbols of myths.
Founding myths emphasize the sacredness of the founding fathers and the legitimacy of the newly founded nations, thus needing interpretations from the perspective of solidarity and integration. When founding myths are interpreted as narratives of integration, the integration between Hwanwoong and Woongnyeo in the Dangun myth represents both the subject and others changing their old identities and leading to new solidarity and integration rather than the one-sided assimilation of others into the subject.
Also required is an effort to interpret the mainstream myths with a focus on alienated others. In particular, there should be a focus on shamanist myths centered around goddesses alienated in the male founding subjects-centric founding myths. In the Princess Bari myth, Princess Bari goes to the other world to obtain medicinal water in an attempt to restore the male-dominated order represented by her father. On the surface, she seems to sacrifice herself to maintain the order of the subject. A closer look, however, reveals that her self-denial and sacrifice break down the relationships between others and the subject and open a door to new solidarity through tolerance and reconciliation.
Myths are subject to diverse interpretations since they talk about the world through symbols. In today's changed environment facing multiculturalism, there should be multicultural interpretations to overcome the old nationalist perspective. It is required to pay attention to the values inherent in myths such as cultural diversity, coexistence, and union and seek out harmonious coexistence between the subject and others based on them.
