다문화 중점학교 프로그램 참여자의 다문화 시민성 인식에 관한 연구 (Study of Experience of Multicultural Citizenship by Participants in Multicultural Education-oriented School Program)

초록

다문화 중점학교는 교육부가 추진하는 다문화 교육 정책의 일환으로 각 시․도 교육청에서 지정하여 운영하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 다문화 교육 중점학교 참여자의 인식을 다문화 시민성 개념을 중심으로 분석하고 그 의미를 밝히고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 참여관찰 및 심층면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였으며 참여 인식의 의미를 ‘다문화 감수성’, ‘협동의식’, ‘공동체의식’의 세 가지 다문화 시민성 요소를 기준으로 살펴보았다.
연구 결과로는 첫째, 개인적 차원에서 친구들과 함께 다양한 문화의 차이를 인정하고, 수용하여 배우는 것이 중요하며 다문화 사회에 대한 인식을 개선하고 친밀감을 강화시켜 다문화 감수성을 높였다. 둘째, 다문화 중점학교 프로그램 참여자들은 대인적 관계에 있어서 상대방과 어울려 협력하여 이해하고 배려하는 마음, 즉 책임의식을 가지게 되었다. 셋째, 다문화 중점학교 프로그램 참여자들은 사회적 요소의 차원에 있어서 공동체의식의 유대감을 함양하였다. 참여자들은 프로그램 참여 과정에서 나와 우리가 변화를 가져올 것이라는 관심과 서로의 소통을 통한 다문화 공동체의 중요성을 자각하였다. 즉 참여자들은 함께 공존하고 참여하여 사회통합 의식을 함양하였다.
이러한 다문화 중점학교 프로그램은 다문화에 관한 인식 개선 교육, 다문화 이해 교육활동 확대 등을 통해 다문화 감수성 신장 및 협동의식 고취, 공동체의식 확산, 세계시민의식이 함양되었음을 보여주고 있다. 또한 교사 및 학생․학교․지역 사회에 대한 다문화 교육의 중요성이 확인되고 있음을 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

The multicultural education-oriented school is a part of the multicultural education policy promoted by the Korean Ministry of Education, which is operated by each metropolitan or provincial office of education. Thus, this study analyzes the experience of participants in the multicultural education-oriented school, focusing on the concept of multicultural citizenship.
This study divided the experience of the participants in the multicultural education-oriented school program into three dimensions of multicultural citizenship and drew its meanings. First, in the personal dimension, it was important for them to accept various cultural differences with friends and learn by the acceptance, and they increased their multicultural sensitivity by improving their awareness about multicultural society and strengthening a sense of intimacy. Second, the participants in the multicultural education-oriented school program came to have a mind to understand and care for others by cooperating with them in interpersonal relations, in other words, a sense of responsibility. Third, the participants in the multicultural education-oriented school program promoted a sense of fellowship of community spirit in the dimension of social elements. The participants perceived the importance of the multicultural community through interest and communication with each other that I and we would bring about a change in the process of participating in the program. In other words, the participants promoted the consciousness of social integration by coexisting and participation.
This multicultural education-oriented school program shows that the participants’ multicultural sensitivity increased, their cooperative spirit was inspired, their community spirit spread, and their global citizenship was promoted through the expansion of an education to improve multicultural awareness and educational activities for multicultural understanding. In addition, it shows that the importance of multicultural education for teachers, students, schools and communities are confirmed.
