초록

본고는 한국영화사에서 1980년대가 지니는 의미에 대한 역사적 고찰이다. 또한 이를 바탕으로 1980년대 한국영화의 역사, 나아가 한국영화사를 재구성하기위한 탐색이기도 하다. 1980년대는 해방과 한국전쟁, 4.19 혁명과 5.16 쿠데타에이어 한국 역사의 패러다임을 바꾸는 전환점이었다. 이는 한국영화사의 변곡 내지 변환에도 직결되는 격동이었다. 뿐만 아니라 한국영화사에서 1980년대는 현재한국영화의 패러다임으로 이행하는 시발점으로서 주목할 만한 의의를 지닌다. 이에 이 글에서는 기존 한국영화사에서 1980년대의 역사를 서술하는 방법과 내용에 대해 살펴보는 것을 시작으로, 1980년대 영화 사료에 대한 분석과 재구성을통해 1980년대가 지니는 ‘전환’의 함의를 천착하고자 했다.
1980년대 한국영화는 다각적인 변화의 국면에 처해 있었다. 그래서 한마디로술어화하는 것은 물론이고 선조적으로 서술하기 어려운 난맥을 보여준다. 또한1980년대 안에서의 변화 또한 다기하기에 ‘한국영화사를 1980년대라는 단위로보는 것이 유효한가?’라는 의문을 유발하기도 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는‘1980 년대 한국영화사’를 총체적으로 서술한다는 것이 왜 어려운지를 생각해보는 가운데 1980년대 한국영화가 처했던 맥락과 그것을 바라보는 기존 영화사 서술의 시각들을 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 한국영화사에서 1980년대가 지니는 의미를 점검하면서 1980년대 한국영화의 역사, 나아가 한국영화사를 재구성하는 데 필요한부분들을 밝혔다. 이는 기본적으로 ‘1980년대 한국영화의 역사를 어떻게 서술할것인가?’라는 질문과 궤를 함께 하며 궁극적으로 그 해법에 대한 고민을 심화하고자 하는 것이었다.
기존 한국영화사에서 1980년대를 ‘전환’ 내지 ‘이행’의 시기로 보는 데에는 이견이 없다. 이는 1980년대에 이르러 괄목할 만하게 변수가 많아지고 맥락이 다원화되는 것과 직결된다. 첫째, 경제성장이 가속화되면서 미디어의 확산과 다원화또한 빠르게 진행되었다. 이러한 가운데 한국 대중문화와 함께 성장한 전후(戰後) 베이비부머 세대가 정치뿐만 아니라 문화의 주도층이 되어갔다. 둘째, 박정희 정권이 영화법을 제정한 이래 영화정책에 속박되어왔던 영화 장르가 통제로부터벗어나며 시장경쟁 속에서 재편성되었다. 셋째, 자본주의의 세계화에 따른 자유화에 동승하게 되면서 이분법으로는 제어할 수도 해명할 수도 없는 근본적인 변화가 일어나고 있었다.
그렇다면 이러한 전환의 맥락에 놓여있는 1980년대 한국영화사를 어떻게 재구성할 수 있을 것인가? 우선 시대 구분 면에서 볼 때 1980년대는 전반기와 후반기로 나누어 전반기는 1970년대와 후반기는 1990년대와 묶어 논의하는 것이 보다적실하다. 둘째, 총체적인 역사 서술을 논하기에 앞서 다양한 갈래 별 주제 별 통사가 활발하게 연구되는 것이 필요하다. 셋째, 다른 매체와의 관계사를 통해 영화를 둘러싼 다기한 맥락과 변수들이 다각도로 논의될 필요가 있다.
1980년대 한국영화의 역사를 서술한다는 것은 결국 한국영화사를 서술한다는것이다. 현 시점에서 이영일의 『한국영화전사』와 같은 통사는 서술되기도 어렵거니와 새로운 역사 서술이 되기도 힘들다. 『한국영화전사』가 이영일 일인의 성과이기에 앞서 이영일에 의해 집필된 당시 한국영화사 사료와 역량의 총화였듯이, 한국영화사는 다양한 연구 성과의 축적을 통해 구성되어 가는 것이다. 1980년대영화사 또한 1980년대 영화에 대한 복수(複數)의 서술을 통해 한국영화사를 구성하는 복수(複數)의 일환으로 축적되며 새롭게 구성될 수 있을 것이다.

This paper examines the significance of the 1980’s in Korean Film History. It is also an exploratory study to reconstruct the history of South Korean Film through the 1980s.
In the 1980s, South Korean film faced a situation of multifaceted changes, which makes it difficult to sum up in a predicate and describe it sequentially. In addition, its changes within the time frame of the 1980s were various, which raises a question, "Is it valid to look at the history of South Korean film as a unit of the 1980s?" Thinking of the difficulties of describing the "history of South Korean film in the 1980s" in an overall manner, this study set out to examine the context in which South Korean movies were in the 1980s and their viewpoints in the existing descriptions about the history of South Korean film. This study aimed to test the meanings of the 1980s in the history of South Korean film and identify what would be needed to reorganize the history of the 1980s and further throughout the time. This is an attempt to trace the same orbit of "how to describe the history of South Korean film in the 1980s," ultimately reinforcing contemplations over its answers.
There are no differing opinions about viewing the 1980s as a period of "transition" or "shift" in the history of South Korean film, and it is directly related to the considerable increase of variables and diversification of context during the period. First, the acceleration of economic growth enabled the fast expansion and pluralization of media, in the middle of which the post-war baby boom generation, who grew with the popular culture of South Korea, became the leading force in culture as well as in politics. Secondly, the film genre, which had been bound to movie policies since the Film Act during the Park Chung-hee regime, was emancipated from control and reorganized for market competition.
Thirdly, there were fundamental changes that could not be controlled or explained with dichotomy in the South Korean film as it rode along with liberalization according to the globalization of capitalism.
Then how can one reorganize the history of South Korean film in the 1980s under this context of transition? First, it would be proper to divide the period into the former and latter half and discuss them with the 1970s and the 1990s, respectively. Secondly, there should be active research on syntax according to various parts and topics before discussing the overall descriptions of the history.
Thirdly, there is a need to discuss various types of context and variables surrounding movies in many different angles through the history of its relationship with other media.
Describing the history of South Korean film in the 1980s is to describe the entire history of South Korean film. At this point, such syntax as Lee Yeong-il’s Whole History of South Korean Film is difficult to be described and has become a new description of history. It was a combination of historical materials and capabilities in the history of South Korean film during those days compiled by him before an individual’s personal achievement. It demonstrates that the history of South Korean film is organized by the accumulation of various research achievements. The film history of the 1980s can also be organized anew, being accumulated as part of multiple descriptions comprising the history of South Korean film through multiple descriptions about the movies during the period.
