조선왕조실록 번역사업과 남북한 체제경쟁: 1970년대와 1980년대를 중심으로 (The Translation Project of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty and the Regime Competition between South & North Korea: Focusing on the 1970s and the 1980s)

초록

본 논문은 『조선왕조실록』(이하 『실록』) 번역 사업을 남북한 체제경쟁과 정당화 차원에서 분석함으로써 고전번역을 둘러싼 분단국가의 상징정치를 이해하고, 더 나아가 이를 통하여 근대국가의 문화유산 재현과 그 기념의 문화정치를 해명하고자 한다. 1970년대를 통해 첨예해진 남북한의 민족사적 역사정통성 경쟁은 전근대 기록물 같은 문화유산을 부각시켰고, 그 중심에서 『실록』과 같은 민족고전에 대한 재현의 정치가 작동하게 만들었다. 남북한은 『실록』번역의 준비와 과정이 상이했지만, 공히 대내외적인 체제 정당성 작업의 문화적 장치로 이를 작동시키면서 서로가 자극을 주고받았다. 북한이 『실록』 번역을 국가적 차원에서 해방 이후부터 체계적으로 준비했다면, 남한은 유신시대에 와서 국가가 개입하기 시작하면서 번역작업이 시작되었다. 북한은 1970년대의 집중적인 번역을 통해 1980년대 초 완역을 이룩했는데, 이는 5공화국에 자극을 주어 『실록』 번역의 집중지원과 그에 따른 빠른 완역이 가능하게 했다. 결국 남북한이 서로를 의식하면서 체제의 논리를 민족주의에 결합시켜 경쟁적으로 번역작업을 진행하였고, 이는 대내적인 차원에서 정당성에 대한 국민동원의 기제장치의 역할을 했다. 물론, 이 과정에서 서로 다른 논리가 활용되었고 실제 작업의 경로와 방식 역시 달랐지만, 남북한은 공히 민족주의와 역사적 전통과 계승, 새로운 역사 창달을 내세우며 국민을 동원하였다. 즉 민족고전 번역이 근대국가의 상징정치와 기억의 장소가 되었으며 그 과정에서 『실록』은 민족고전으로 국민교양이 되었다. 이같은 남북한의 『실록』 번역과정은 문화유산을 둘러싼 근대국가의 문화정치와 남북한의 특수성을 그대로 보여주는 사례이다.

영어초록

This thesis examines the translation of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty(AJD) in the context of the systemic competition between North and South Korea, and through this, attempts to explain the reproduction of cultural heritage and its commemoration as the cultural politics of the modern state. The historical legitimacy competition between North and South Korea, which became sharper through the 1970s, highlighted cultural heritage such as pre-modern records, and the politics of representation surrounding the translation of AJD was at the center of it. The two Koreas had different preparations and processes for the annals translation, but they both exchanged stimuli as a cultural device for internal and external system legitimacy work. Whereas North Korea prepared systematically for the translation of AJD at the national level since liberation, South Korea began the translation work in the 1970s when the state began to intervene. North Korea achieved a complete translation in the early 1980s through intensive translation in the 1970s. North and South Korea were conscious of each other and competed in the translation work. The logic mobilized in this process was different, and the path and method of the actual work were different, but both Koreas combined it with nationalism and used it in symbolic politics. In the process, AJD were turned into national classics and canonized as national culture. This process of translating AJD by North and South Korea clearly shows the historical reproduction and symbolic politics of legitimacy developed by the modern state around cultural heritage. This fact also shows the uniqueness of the two Koreas in the reproduction and commemoration of cultural heritage.
