초록

이 글은 『임실 창평일기』에 나타난 각종 계들의 성립·활동·해체에 관한 기록을 중심으로, 전근대 한국사회에서 유래한 계의 조직원리가 현대 한국의 농촌사회라는 맥락 속에서 어떻게 활용되고 있었는지를 검토하였다. 특히 전근대 한국사회의 공동체 부재 상태를 표현한 ‘다층이심의 연대’ 개념의 비판적 검토를 병행함으로써, 이 글은 한국적인 공동체 문화를 계 조직의 특성과 관련하여 부각시키는 데에 주력하였다.
이를 위한 분석은 크게 세 장으로 나누어 진행하였다. 그 첫 부분인 제II장에서는 우선 내재적 관점에서 계의 형태와 논리가 분석되었다. 이를 통해 이 글은 계는 조직의 유연성과 해체의 용이성이 그 중요한 특징이라는 점, 그것이 현대사회 속에서도 살아남고 또 다양하게 확장될 수 있었던 배경에는 이로 인한 조직운영 상의 편리함이 깔려있었다는 설명을 시도하였다.
그 다음 III장에서는 촌락사회가 어떻게 구성되고 운영되는지를 파악하기 위해 계들 사이의 관계를 검토하였다. 이를 통해 20세기 후반에 이르러서도 동계(洞契)나 동회(洞會) 와 같은 마을자치기구가 마을 내 각종 조직들의 구성과 활동을 제어하고 지탱하는 역할을 하고 있었음을 확인했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 각종의 계들은 마을자치기구의 하부조직이 되는 것이 아니라 일정하게 독립한 별도의 조직으로 존재하였음도 확인된다. 이는 다시 각종 계들의 생성·해체와 무관하게 촌락사회가 일정한 질서를 지속할 수 있는 배경이 되는 것으로 파악되었다.
IV장에서는 주로 계에 의한 공동화 원리의 본성과 속성이 무엇인지에 대한 다소간 이론적인 검토를 진행하였다. 이와 관련하여 이 글은 우선 재물추렴과 존본취리(存本取利) 에 의한 계의 활동방식이 공동체의 물적 토대가 약했던 재래 한국사회에서 공동체의 구성을 위해 동원할 수 있는 유효적절한 수단이었다는 점을 보였다. 그리고 계의 다종다양 함과 변화무쌍함, 분산적이고 부정합적인 성격이 공동체 부재상태의 지표가 아니라 다양한 공동화를 통해 삶의 문제를 해결하려는 네트워크커뮤니티 구성의 노력들로 이해되어야 한다는 점을 주장하였다.
이상과 같은 논의를 토대로 이 글은 때로 구체적·현실적 목적을 노골화하고, 또 때로는 막연히 친교를 목적으로 하는 다양한 계 공동체의 구성에서, ‘재물이 지니는 구속력’의 의미에 대한 토론을 제기하였다. 그리고 이러한 논의들이 현재적인 관점에서 공동체적 사회관계의 창설이라는 당면한 과제의 실현을 위해 지니는 의미가 무엇인지를 검토하였다.

영어초록

This paper reviews how the organizational principle of Gye, which originated from the premodern society in Korea, has been utilized in the context of the modern agricultural society in Korea, focusing on records concerning establishment, activities and dissolution of a variety of Gyes found in 『Imsil Changpyeong Diary』 The emphasis herein, in particular, was put on highlighting the Korean community culture in relation to characteristics of Gye organizations, based on critical review, in parallel, of the concept of ‘layered and decentralized solidarity’ which represents non-existence of community in the premodern society in Korea.
This paper is mainly divided into three chapters for the sake of analysis for the afore-said purposes. First of all, in Chapter 2, where the analysis starts, types and logics of Gye were analyzed from the intrinsic perspective. In so doing, this paper attempted to explain that organizational flexibility and easiness of dissolution is one of the key features of Gye and that the resulting convenience in operating the organization enabled Gye to have survived through the modern society and expanded in diverse manners.
In Chapter 3, relationship between Gyes is reviewed to understand how the village societies have been constructed and operated. Through this effort, it was confirmed that even by the late 20th century, autonomous organizations of villages such as Donggye (洞契) or Donghoe (洞會) have been serving to control and support formation and activities of diverse organizations in the village. Nevertheless, it is also confirmed that various Gyes have existed not as a sub-organization of autonomous organizations of villages, but as a separate, independent entity in a certain way. This is how village societies could maintain its order, irrespective of continued creation and dissolution of Gyes.
In Chapter 4, a relatively theoretical review was conducted to identify the nature and attributes of Gye organizations. In this regard, this paper showed that because of its operational method based on property-sharing and interest-taking with the principal remaining intact, Gye was an effective and proper means through formation of a community in the traditional Korean society whose material foundation was weak. And this paper asserts that variety and changeability of Gye and its decentralized and disconformable characteristics are not an indicator of non-existence of community but that they shall be understood as efforts to solve problems in life by forming communities.
Based on the review above, this paper raised discussions on the meaning of the ‘binding power of properties’ in formation of a community and on how to understand specific and realistic purposes of various Gyes. And it also reviewed the meaning of such discussions in achieving an imminent task of creating community-like social relations from the present perspectives.
