강진 병영상인에 관한 역사적 재조명 (GangJin ByeongYeong Merchant’s historical Reviews)

초록

본 연구는 강진 병영상인에 관한 역사를 재조명함에 있어 통일신라시대부터 해방 이후 근현대사까지 이어온 병영상인의 형성과정을 연구함으로써 한국에도 개성상인 못지 않은 병영상인이 있다는 사실을 밝히는데 본 연구의 필요성을 두었다.
‘북에는 개성상인, 남에는 병영상인’이라는 구전처럼 개성상인과 동등하게 거론되어온 병영상인은 타 지역과 다른 나라의 상인연구에 비해 연구가 전무한 실정이다. 이런 현 상황을 인식하여 뜻있는 지역 사학자들과 지역 언론 등 병영상인정신의 현대적 의미를 모색하려는 연구가 시작되고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 병영상인의 형성을 연구하여 역사 속에 희미한 병영상인을 재조명하는 한편, 한국의 대표 상인정신 중 하나로 정립하고 나아가 한국의 기업가 정신 모델을 개발하는데 의의를 두고 있다.
또한, ‘북송상(北松商) 남병상(南兵商)’으로 불리우는 병영상인을 소개하고 그 역사적 형성과정을 연구함으로써 개성상인과 더불어 한국을 대표하는 상인을 발굴해 냈다는데 의의가 있다. 병영상인의 역사는 시대별로 제 1기를 전라 병영성 이전의 시기, 제 2기를 전라 병영성 시기, 제 3기를 전라병영성 폐영 이후의 시기로 구분하여 연구하였다.
연구를 통하여 얻은 성과로는 통일신라시대에 중국, 일본, 아라비아 등과의 해상무역의 거점인 청해진이 조선후기 1895년까지 강진현이였다는 것을 볼 때 병영상인도 해상왕 장보고의 상인정신에 영향을 받았을 것이라는 점을 연구하였다. 또한 강진 지역은 통일신라시대 이전부터 상인이 출현할 수 밖에 없었고, 조선기대에 축성된 병영성과 함께 명실상부한 병영상인이 탄생함으로써 오늘날 병영상인의 맥이 끊이지 않고 계승되고 있음을 보여 주었다.
이상과 같은 강진 병영상인 형성에 관한 연구는 다음과 같이 기대되는 성과와 활용방안을 찾을 수 있다. 먼저, 우리나라 최고(最古)의 상인정신을 역사적으로 재조명함으로서 우리나라의 다양한 상인 연구의 기초자료로 활용하고자 한다. 즉, 병영상인이 우리나라 전통 상인 정신의 하나로 정립되는 계기를 마련하였다. 또한 병영상인 연구가 더 나아가 상인정신을 계승한 후손들의 기업가정신, 경영철학, 경영사상 등을 연구하는데 새로운 지침과 기초자료를 제공함으로서 연구를 확장하고자 한다.

영어초록

The research is about retracing the history of ‘ByeongYeong merchants in Gangjin’ and it focuses on the fact that ‘ByeongYeong merchants’ exist in South Korea as much as ‘Gaeseong merchants’ by studying of formation procedure of ‘ByeongYeong merchants’ which has been going on from Unified Silla till modern times right after liberation in 1945.
Like the old saying “Gaeseong merchants in North, ByeongYeong merchants in South,” there is no research about ‘ByeongYeong merchants’ who were treated as much as Gaeseong merchants equally compare to the study of other countries’ merchants or other region in Korea.
In this reality, local historians and local presses in the region study about the formation of ‘ByeongYeong merchants’ and shed new light on ‘ByeongYeong merchants’ in history and set up one of the typical business spirit of Korea and furthermore they want to develop “ByeongYeong merchants’ as the model of Korean entrepreneurial spirit.Also this study is very meaningful to introduce ‘ByeongYeong merchants’ was called “Gaeseong merchants in North, ByeongYeong merchants in South” and to discover “ByeongYeong merchants” as the representative merchants of Korea along with Gaeseong merchant by researching historical formation procedure of ‘ByeongYeong merchants’.
The history of ‘ByeongYeong merchants’ is divided into 3 periods by historical and the first period is period of before ‘ByeongYeong in Jeolla province’ and the second period is ‘ByeongYeong in Jeonla province’ and the third period is after closing ByeongYeong in Jeolla province’.This research shows the fact that ‘the ByeongYeong merchants’ had to be appeared before ‘King of Sea, Jang bogo’ to see that Cheonghaejin which was the hub of ocean trading with Arabia, Japan and China in Unified Silla was Gangjinhyeun till 1895 and finally ‘ByeongYeong merchants’ was truly born with the ByeongYeong was built in Chosun dynasty and it is continued still.
There are several expectations and utilizations from this research for formation of ‘ByeongYeong merchants in Gangjin’ like below.
First, this research can be used as the basic information of various merchants by shedding new light on the entrepreneurial spirit of the best Korean merchants historically.
In other words, this research made an opportunity to set up the traditional entrepreneurial spirit of Korea by ‘ByeongYeong merchants’.
Also this research can be provided itself as new guide lines and basic information to study entrepreneurial spirit, business philosophy and business management of descendents who succeeded to entrepreneurial spirit and try to expand the this research contributes to expand the range of this theme.
