The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between cultural disposition, mental health and subjective well-being of university students and to examine whether gender differences exist in those relationships. For the study, 398 students were sampled from two universities. The data were collected using SCL-90-R, Index of Well-being and, Aucland Individualism-Collectivism Scale and statistical analysis was performed. The results were as follows: First, university students' depression, anxiety, interpersonal sensitivity, paranoia, and the subjective well-being score tended to be slightly higher. There was no significant difference in mental health and subjective well-being between male group and female group. Second, male group tend to be more individualistic than female group, but there was no difference in collectivism. Male group showed no difference between individualism and collectivism disposition, but female group had significantly higher collectivism disposition than individualism score. Third, in male group, individualism disposition contributed significantly to depression, anxiety reduction and subjective well-being increase. However, in the female group, the individualism disposition was not related to depression and anxiety. Fourth, in the male group, depression, anxiety, and paranoia were significantly lower in the individualism higher group than in the lower group, and the subjective well-being was significantly higher. In female group, the collectivism higher group showed higher subjective well-being than the lower group. Based on the above results, the implications, limitations of this study and follow-up study were suggested.
