초록

쟁점 중심 사회과 교육론자들에게 사회과와 사회과학의 관계를 설정하는 일은 난해한 문제이다. 배경 학문을 공유하고 있기 때문에 양자를 질적으로 명확하게 구분하기가 쉽지 않다. 특히, 사회과의 정체성을 둘러싼 논쟁에서 사회과와 사회과학의 관계는 더욱 복잡해진다. 사회과와 사회과학의 관계를 탐색하는 논의를 보면, 사회과는 ‘단순화된 사회과학’으로 인식되기도 하고, ‘사회과학의 종합’으로 개념화되기도 한다. 그러나 이와 같은 양자 간의 단편적인 포섭 관계만으로는 사회과의 고유한 정체성을 말하기 어렵다. 사회과의 역사를 고찰하면, 사회과의 정체성 논의는 사회과학과의 관련을 유지하면서도 시민성 교육이라는 독자적인 교과 정체성을 확립하기 위한 방향으로 전개되었음을 확인할 수 있다. 쟁점 중심 사회과 교육은 시민성 교육에 중점을 두는 사회과를 지탱해 온 대표적인 교육 담론이다. 이들의 논리 속에서 사회과의 정체성이 보다 구체화되고 있다. 쟁점 중심 사회과 교육 담론을 검토하면, 사회과가 사회과학과의 공통된 토대를 공유하면서도 인문학 및 비판주의를 포섭하여 그 영역을 확장할 수 있는 가능성이 확인된다. 본고는 쟁점 중심 사회과의 관점에서 사회과와 사회과학의 관계를 새롭게 설정하기 위한 이론적 토대 구축을 시도한다.

영어초록

For the issues-centered social studies educators, it is difficult to establish the relationship between social studies and social sciences. Because they share the background of the discipline field, it is not easy to distinguish them qualitatively and clearly. In particular, the relationship between social studies and social sciences becomes more complicated in the controversy over the identity of social studies. Social studies is perceived as ‘the simplified social sciences’ or conceptualized as ‘the federation of social sciences’. However, it is difficult to say the unique identity of social studies only through the inclusive relationship between the two. Examining the history of social studies, it can be confirmed that the discussion on the identity of social studies has been developed in the direction of establishing an independent identity for citizenship education while maintaining the relationship with social sciences. The issues-centered social studies education is a representative discourse of education that has supported social studies with an emphasis on citizenship education. In the logic of the issues-centered social studies education, the identity of social studies is becoming more concrete. Reviewing the discourse of the issues-centered social studies education, it is confirmed that social studies can expand its scope by embracing humanities and criticism while sharing a common foundation with social sciences. This paper attempts to build a theoretical foundation for reconstructing the relationship between social studies and social sciences based on the perspective of the issues-centered social studies.
