초록

우리 사회에는 진보적 사상을 가장하여 뿌리 내리고 있는 좌익, 친북세력들이 잔존
하고 있기 때문에 이러한 세력들이 대한민국의 자유민주적 기본질서를 수호하기 위
한 국가차원의 노력을 방해하여 간혹 남남갈등이나 국론분열을 불러일으키기도 한다.
이런 현실 하에서 본 연구에서는‘애국심’ 수준의 분석을 통해 그 심각성을 알아보고
애국심의 교육의 필요성과 그 전제 조건들에 대하여 모색해 보기로 한다.
그러면, 비교적 낮은 애국심과 안보의식을 가지고 있는 젊은 세대들에게 애국심을
교육할 때 우리가 지켜야 할 가치관은 무엇일까? 그 하나는 도덕성에 바탕을 둔 온
건한 애국심 교육이라 하겠다. 온건주의적 애국심은 자국민들로 하여금 단지 보편적
이고 도덕적인 원칙에 따라서 자신의 나라의 이익을 추구하도록 한다. 이러한 사상을
갖은 애국심을 지지하는 사람들은 자신의 나라와 동포에 대한 각별한 관심을 보일 뿐
아니라 다른 나라들과 그 국민들에 대한 배려도 고려한다. 또 다른 하나는 애국심 교
육은 인도주의(Humanitarianism)에 바탕을 두어야 한다는 사실이다. 즉, 애국심은 인
도주의를 무시하는 민족주의, 국수주의 그리고 쇼비니즘과는 분명히 구별되어야 한다.
민족주의, 국수주의 그리고 쇼비니즘은 애국심을 가장한 극도의 자국민 이기주의이기
때문에 국가나 단체가 표방하는 극단적이면서도 배타적인 무모한 사상이다. 따라서
긍정적인 도덕적 가치와 인도주의가 애국심 교육의 중요한 전제 조건으로 반드시 고
려되어야 할 덕목이다.

영어초록

The Republic of Korea turned into ruins due to the Korean Civil War by the
North Korean invasion and degenerated into one of the world's poorest countries.
Then it has overcame the numerous difficulties achieving the "Miracle on the Han
River" and today the international community has admired the economic and
political development it has achieved. However, as the Korean peninsula is in the
armistice and is facing North Korea's physical and psychological provocation and
threat, the patriotism is treated as an important norm in Korean society even
though it may sound like rather an old fashioned and hackneyed concept after the
post-Cold War era. Moreover, the data collected by Ministry of Public
Administration and Security and other survey agencies show that the Korean
people’s patriotic spirit or patriotism is relatively low in general. Especially, in
case of students, the higher the grade rises, the lower the students' patriotism is.
If that’s the case, what kind of patriotism do need to educate for people and
students in particular? Are all ‘patriotisms’appropriate to infuse into them? The
concept of moderate patriotism tries to avoid negative characteristics of
cosmopolitanism that allows for no attachment and loyalty to one’s country and
compatriots. If patriotism is morally unacceptable, as some philosophers believe,
then education for patriotism cannot be tolerated, although some other non-moral
reasons might be in favour of such education. In other words, Korean society and
schools should promote morally acceptable types of patriotism such as ‘moderate
patriotism’,‘constitutional patriotism’, and‘cosmopolitan patriotism’. On the contrary,
an extreme patriotism offends against the requirement of universality and
impartiality of moral judgment. It is an arbitrary, morally illegitimate type of
partialism,’and should be rejected.
In addition to morality in patriotism education, the other norm for patriotism
education is humanitarianism which has been fairly marginalized with the
resurgence of nationalism, ultranationalism and even chauvinism in many countries
around the world. Since one of the consequences of the revival of these ideologies
was ethnic conflict or even war, the close relation between the ideologies and
patriotism has posed a challenge to political and moral philosophy to reconsider
the meaning of patriotism. The ideologies force the nation to sacrifice and
self-justify for themselves in the name of distorted ‘patriotism’ which ignores
humanitarianism.
