초록

본 논문의 연구목적은 김정일(金正日)의 정치지도자적 자질과 특성을 분석하여 그 자질과 특성을 평가하는 데에 있다. 본 연구의 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째로, 신체 및 체질에서는 연령과 외모가 체중, 신장, 건강보다 더 긍정적으로 그의 정치적 리더십 발휘에 작용하고 있다. 둘째로, 사회적 배경과 직업적 특성에서는 학력, 가정배경, 주요 경력이 모두 긍정적 특질로 자리잡고 있는 가운데 조직과 인사 관리능력, 사교성, 명예성, 성취욕, 인내력, 과업지향성이 협동성․사회성․책임감보다 더 그의 정치적 리더싑 발휘에 긍정적으로 작용하고 있다. 셋째로, 정신적 능력과 개성에서는 지능, 결단력, 지식, 판단력이 대중연설력보다 뛰어남과 동시에 민첩성, 자신감, 지배성, 독창성이 성실성과 외향성보다 더 높게 그의 정치적 리더십 발휘에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 있다.
이와 같은 분석결과를 토대로 볼 때, 김정일의 정치지도자적 자질 및 특성에 대한 강점과 약점이 있다고 총평하였다. 그의 강점은 사회적 배경 및 직업적 특성에서 가장 높게 나타나고 있다. 그 반면에 그의 약점은 신체 및 체격과 정신적 능력 및 개성에서 나오고 있다. 결론적으로 현재까지 김정일은 북한의 지도자로서 자신의 정치적 리더십을 안정적으로 발휘하고 있지만, 중장기적 관점에서 김정일의 정치적 리더십 발휘여부는 김일성과 다른 독창적이고 혁신적인 새로운 카리스마적 리더십을 창출하느냐, 그렇지 못하느냐에 달려 있다고 전망했다.

영어초록

The research objective of this thesis is to analyze Kim Jong-Il's traits about the political leader, and based on such analysis, to assess his qualities or characters of political leadership. In North Korea, nowadays, glorifying titles for Kim Jong-il are the (Little) Suryung, the Great Leader, the great general, general secretary of the Workers` Party of Korea, chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission, supreme commander of the Korean People`s Army. Kim Jong-il's positions of political leader was giving priority to blood-kinship relations with his father, Kim Il Sung. Kim Il-sung ruled over North Korea for a long period of time- almost 49 years (from 1945 to 1994). That successor was Kim Jong-il. In February, 1974, the central committee of the ruling Workers' Party had chosen Kim Jong-il as the official heir that would inherit the regime. Until then, He had to go through bloody power game. After Kim Il Sung's death in 1994, nowadays Kim Jong-Il is, no doubt, the only hereditary ruler of Kim Il-Sung' eldest son and the Great Leader or the (Little) Suryung in absolute leader of North Korea. Therefore, this thesis attempts to interest in Kim Jong-Il's traits(qualities or characters) about the political leader.
Following these research objective, the results of this thesis analyzed as below. Namely, his political leader's traits analyzed superiority and inferiority(superiority>inferiority) as below. ① the body and physical constitution: age․appearance > weight․height․health. ② the social background and professional character: school career․family background․political career were valued in the all superiority, capacity of management․sociability․desire for fame․appetite for accomplishment․perseverance․discharge of duty > cooperative spirit․sociality․sense of responsibility. ③ the mental ability and individuality : intelligence․definite decision․knowledge․judgment > public speech, alacrity․self-confidence․control․creative talent > honesty․extroversion. Basing on the results of such analysis, Kim's traits(qualities or characters) of the political leader found that he has the strength and the weakness. His strongest asset is the school career, family background, political career in the social background and professional character. On the other hand, His strongest disadvantage is weight, height, health in the body and physical constitution, and public speech, honesty, extroversion in the mental ability and individuality.
In the future, Kim Jong-il's political leadership will fall not because of a shock from outside but because of a paradox within. Because apart from inter-clan contradictions and the economy there are at least three more sources of danger for the Kim Jong-il leadership: the children and other relatives of the party and state leaders of the DPRK who were purged or simply put out of the way into political backyards by Kim Il Sung in his struggle for absolute power in the 1950-1970s, the emerging middle class, and the youth. Particularly, economic crisis resulting in growing social and political tension in North Korea is the major problem the Kim Jong-il leadership of today is facing. In conclusion, no matter how talented he is in the traits of political leadership, the leader who fail to resolve stabilize the livelihood of the people is likely to ousted at the end.
