  • Asian American Athletes Deserve Respect
Asian American Athletes Deserve RespectAmerica, in my opinion is the best country in the world. Where else in the world do the people of a country have so much freedom and endless possibilities to do whatever they please? The United States is truly a land of opportunities for its people to achieve their goals in life through hard work and dedication. Just the fact of having the freedom of choice is such a wonderful privilege. In this land of many different ethnicities, Asian Americans are a race that has made a huge impact. They are involved in numerous fields in society, from government, education, business, and professional sports. However, it seems as though Asian American athletes in professional sports do not get the full credit and respect they deserve for their craft. They are always seen as Asians first, then professional athletes second. This can be rooted from the mainstream media’s depictions of Asian Americans talented in academics, business, and technology; but are not reaby African Americans who are naturally gifted athletes; that a successor of Shaquille O’Neal, the most dominant player in the league, would be from China was truly least likely. Walton also added, “Simply put, the 20-year-old Yao has a chance to alter the way the game of basketball is played… This guy has skills, competitiveness and basketball intelligence that far exceed his limited background.” Yao, being of Asian descent, broke the stereotype of Asians not excelling in the sport of basketball. He truly defied the odds and proved to be a talent worthy of notice. Over the past 15 years, the NBA has put a higher premium on physical talent than on skill. The international game favors the opposite, skill without the physical prowess. Yao Ming has the chance to be the bridge that spans both worlds. Even before Yao was exposed to the world, he broke the stereotypes and truly broke out in to the spotlight in China. In a nation where few citizens are allowed to go abroad (for fear of mass exent are not very tall on the average, and most of them can’t compete against the more physically developed, taller, and skillful African American or White players. I was six feet tall, but I was short when I was on the basketball court with guys that were 6’8” or even 7’. I eventually had no choice but to accept the fact that basketball is a sport where physical talent is the key, that being height. No matter how skillful you are, a taller player will always have an advantage over you and there is nothing much you can do about that. I envy, respect, and commend Yao Ming for having the physical prowess, as well as the talent to exceed in a field where Asians were non-existent. I was very proud to see that an Asian player has made a mark in the sport of basketball as one of the best. Yao Ming has broken Asian stereotypes when it comes to sports, especially basketball, and he needs to be recognized and respected for his achievements and for future accomplishments.Everyone in the world knoPlease forgive me…but sometimes I get very emotional…when I talk about my son…My heart…fills with so…much… joy…when I realize…that this young man…is going to be able…to help so many people…” Earl Woods was talking about the tremendous influence that Tiger had on the world. Through his talent, Tiger was able to touch so many people and fill their hearts with joy and hope. By becoming a role model, he has made it a reality for some young golfer to work hard and become a great professional golfer. The way Tiger carries himself, his skills on the golf course, and the fact that he is of a mixed heritage, truly make him a global icon. Earl Woods also added, “He will transcend this game…and bring to the world…a humanitarianism…which has never been known before. The world will be a better place to live in…by virtue of his existence…and his presence…” Being a role model is a tremendous responsibility but at the same time, one of the greatest feelings in the world. The fact that you are able to was able to compete with the best. Reading about what it took to accomplish what she did, I realized that extraordinary athletes truly dedicate their lives to the sport that they love. Kwan said, “When we moved to the Ice Castle campus, we had to do a little shuffling around. My mother stayed in Torrance with Ron so that he could finish high school there and she could run the restaurant with my grandparents. My dad stayed with Karen and me in our cabin on the campus and commuted to work everyday. He had to get up very early in order to make the 110-mile drive.”Michelle and her family sacrificed a lot of comfort and family times that most of us take for granted. In order for Michelle to succeed, her family played a key role in supporting her with what she needed to do. Everyone gave up a little to hopefully gain a lot later. That’s exactly what happened to Michelle and her family. Their sacrifices all paid off when Michelle won the gold at the World Figure Skating Championships in 1996GE 1

  • Are we violent in nature?
Are we violent in nature? The nature of the human race might be incredibly violent. Violence is everywhere in the world; it is even in a small toy of a child. Hollywood won’t be that successful without the scenes with violence and television news delivers the human made violence to our living rooms everyday. Humans not only like to watch violence, but also create and play with violence. The one very common example of the creating violence would be the violent video games. There are hundreds of the violent video games which are created by humans to make other humans to create violence within the games. Players of the violent games create violence; they kill others, smuggle drugs, rob purses, and enforce violence without any reason. Moreover the major players of the violent games are young teenager boys who can easily imitate the video game violence in their lives. Violence in videogames is a problem and should be restricted. It is addictive, causing social isolation and making kids aggressive.Playing violent video games is like smoking unhealthy cigarettes. Like cigarettes, the violent video games are incredibly addictive because it gives sweet pleasure while players are playing it. Like cigarettes, it is also hard to quit because our bodies remember the pleasure. In “Video Game Violence and Our Sons” Rebecca Hagelin writes “while playing the game, teenage boys and young men, the largest users of video games, actually become the characters who cut up their victims with chainsaws, set them on fire, or chop off their heads.” The violent video games train young boys to become serial killers, drug smugglers, highjackers, thieves, and terrorists. The addiction makes boys to practice dangerous violence every day. The addiction can be incredibly dangerous to the young teenage boys who are vulnerable to perform blindly. They might practice what they were trained in the real world as addictive players. Like smoking cigarettes, the addiction of violent video games creates tremendous health problems to teenager boys; they are getting heavy. Dr S Bose from Delhi says, “Every hour children play videogames doubles their chances of obesity. When children are young they require healthy foods and regular exercise. Sitting for hours at a stretch and playing videogames and doting on junk food leads to obesity in children. (2)” Moreover, those heavy boys are more easily to be addictive and admiring the violence in video games because compare to other kids they tense to have less social lives. If those socially inactive boys are trained to be extremely violent by video games and one of them has no where to express his mad, it is true that we are training him to be a next public shooter.Playing violent video games make teenage boys to be isolated from their families and the society. Conversations among family members have been reducing since inventions of electric devices. We have much more things to do at home, compare to ancient times. During their adolescents teenage boys who have hobbies of playing violent video games have less chance to have conversations with their parents. It is very dangerous because instead of having appropriate roll models they might imitate the characters of violent video games who are usually bad criminals. In the article “Video Game Violence and Our Sons” Rebecca Hagelin writes, “teenagers’ brains are still developing and are extremely impressionable. The parents of teem hardly need reminding that for all their joys, teens often lack judgment, critical thinking skills, and foresight.”Although playing violent video games might reduce real world violence, there is no denying the fact that those violent video games make teenager boys naturally aggressive. Makers of violent video game put huge effort to make the games more violent to attract boys; they spend more money to make the games more realistic to erase the boundary between the game world and the real world. In “When Life Imitates Video” John Leo writes. “More realistic touches in video games help blur the boundary between fantasy and reality- guns carefully modeled on real ones, accurate-looking wounds, screams and other sound effects, even the recoil of a heavy rifle.” It is true that boys upgrade their Play Stations to have better graphic and sound; the upgraded version of Play Stations make violence more realistic.

  • Achieving a Freedom
Achieving a Freedom(Final Research Paper)One of the great themes in “Joy luck Club” is about women’s sexual freedom. The movie is about three generations of women who are struggling to find their own sexual freedoms. The movie is about mothers and daughters: conflicts and reconciliations of old and new way of thinking of sexuality. Sexuality of Asian Women was represented in many different ways by so many different films. Movies were made and spread stereotypes of Asian Woman because they were Orientals: very imaginary people.Hollywood divided values between Western and Non-Western, and they represented Non-Western by values of mysticism and imaginative. Sexualities of Asian Women were always in certain types of stereotypes because Asian Women were always very imaginary people like Carlton Moss once wrote in his essay “In portraying the Asian American, Native American, Afro American, and Mexican American, it seems there is always something missing. Or, to borrow from the novelist Jamesm of sexuality. This hilarious episode was about laugh at the “Virgin Mary” and achieves true freedom of her sexuality. The movie “Flower Drum Song” also represents the “Virgin Mary” type of sexuality. Mei Li who was from China to America to marry her arranged husband didn’t know anything about her future husband. Mei Li naturally accepts everything about the future husband including the sexuality. Although the movie is a happy ending which Mei Li finally sexually attracted to her future husband and gets married, she was represented as a woman who must hide her sexual feelings and accept everything of her husband. This thought was also in the Joy luck Club when Lindo’s mother told her before her arranged marriage that “you must tell you’re always happy to him”.Historically, women’s sexuality was represented obeyable and non-expressive and this value was considered to be good. Although Asian Women were stereotypically overly sexualized, they were represented as good when they honor aboveon her mother had to become the Fourth wife. Her mother was raped by her stepfather, but her mother couldn’t tell anyone and nobody even her mother’s parents didn’t believe her. An-Mei’s mother had a son, yet he was taken by the Second wife. An-Mei screamed at her mothers funeral to the Second wife and her stepfather “you must treated me and my brother as the top class of the household”. She finally expresses her feelings instead of her mother and finds their freedom.“Joy Luck Club” is a women movie which is about mothers and daughters. Mothers are from the “old” surrounding to the New World to find their freedom and give their daughters more freedom; however in the movie there are conflicts between mothers and daughters’ sexual freedom. Waverly considers her mother has fear of miscegenation that she believes marrying a Chinese guy would please her mother. She feels guilty of her White boyfriend and fear that Lindo would not accept him. Lauren Tom who played Lena in “Joy Luck Club” oncen to have their freedom of sexualities. In “Joy Luck Club”, the Grandmothers’ generations was represented as women who believe a sex is worth only when their attempt to have a baby especially a son who can carry on their husband’s title. Moreover, women are represented very as sexually weak and vulnerable. For example in “Joy Luck Club” An-Mei’s mother couldn’t resist her husband when she was sleeping with An-Mei; the only thing she could do was sanding An-Mei to the other room. It was amazing fact that the Grandmothers generation tried to pass on their belief of obedience to their daughters and tell their daughters that they can be happy with it. Although Lindo and YingYing who represented as Mother’s generation, escaped from their terrible marriages and the prejudiced thoughts, they also tried to pass on their belief to their daughters such as fear of miscegenation and prejudiced meaning of “Family” which is composed of Chinese father, Chinese mother and their offspring.Prejudiced mir own freedom. Although the movie challenges some of stereotypes of Asian women’s sexuality, the stereotypes of Asian men’s sexuality are remained. “Amy Tan’s book for perpetuating long’ standing screen stereotypes of Asian males. Referring to the fact that two of the three contemporary young women are involved with sympathetically portrayed Caucasian men… Asian-American males are not even attractive to their own women… the massage to women is you’ve got a white boy friend.(Xing 186p)” It is true that in Joy Luck Club Asian men’s sexuality were described as passive, weak, and mean. The filmmaker of “Joy Luck Club” planed these strategies to emphasize Asian women’s sexual freedom against male. There are many strategies that the filmmaker used to represent sexual stereotypes of Asian Women. One of the most interesting strategies was representing Asian women as the people who honors and continues their own sexual prejudice and sexual stereotypes. A generation to next generation, they are les!

  • Gender Issues From 1961 to Present Day
Gender Issues From 1961 to Present DayThe movies, documentaries and books are truth of history that provided us to learn about our ancestors and their past, also use them as to prevent same mistake, we are learning must of our histories in the movies and books, I often watched interesting historical movies and TV shows that I can use them to solve my personal problems and give advice to other people, I saw lots problems and solution for the problems in this movie "flower drum song" that can help between first generation and second generation or gender issues. In the movie two kinds of Asian American men represented, these are first generation Asian American men and second generation Asian American men,in my opinion culture difference is main issue for them, in the movie first generation Asian American men wants to follow their traditional way (Chinese culture) even they are living in America, they lived with Chinese culture in their whole lifetime and they are thinking it is right way ting with western culture(American culture), they have to live with American society, it seems like they combine with tradition culture into the western culture in their own way. I can see common things between two generations, money and marriage are very important things in their life, the movie portrayed some first generation Asian American men can not trust bank so he save all his cash in his personal safe box, I also can seeStereotypes of Asian American men in the movie "crash" that they like money and think about their own family. These two generations Asian American men have different way to treat women; I can see how movie represented the women in the movie two different ways. In the movie they check Mei Li’s body more likely check cow or some kind of other animal, they are more concern about health condition than spiritual mind or education level, only men need to earn money when women have to stay home raise children and do house work, it seems like male uses female as only for nd generation Asian American women in the movie, she tried use men to get better life or just for the money, “Slaying the dragon” portrayed about how Asian women tempt white American. In my opinion this movie created stereotypes about Asian American, “gave birth to a whole new generation of stereotypes-gum chewing little leaguers, enterprising businessmen and all-American tomboys of new model minority myth.” (AATL Page 63), as it says in the movie second generation Asian American have their own life that first generation again American can not understand, since they made this comedy movie they finish with only little argument, but in the real world it is whole different story even I had some trouble with my parents about culture differences, some how we could not understand each other about our own things. “Lai discusses how stereotypes dehumanize people while turning them into objects to be manipulated. Lai touches on the topic of how Asian people and cultures are stereotyped as being on is that it is a struggle to be an Asian in America due to the fact that Asians have been denied political, economic and social equality in America.” ( HYPERLINK "http://www.netessays.net/viewpaper/7983.html" http://www.netessays.net/viewpaper/7983.html). in my opinion, most of first generation Asian American immigrants do not have time for other things, they only have to worry about how to make more money, get bigger house and drive better car, they do not care about who is going to be next president or governor or mayor, even they are US citizen they are more worry about their own country, I do not know it is positively or negatively about our own cultures.I laughed when I see first generation Asian American men check Mei li as healthy female, maybe they portrayed as funny part in the movie, but after few days I realized it is not funny anymore, I thought more deeply into Asian American gender situation in 1961 and present day, I do not think it does not happening in America but its extremely effective due to the fact that stereotypes are not only seen among Asians, they are also seen in many other cultures and genders. For instance, women for years were battling for woman equality to be able to vote, and today women are still battling for their rights.” ( HYPERLINK "http://www.netessays.net/viewpaper/7983.html" http://www.netessays.net/viewpaper/7983.html). Asian American women issues not only here in American there is more other counties that women can not vote or can not work. It is hard to change stereotypes in America as immigrants, first Asian American generation had big and strong impression to other races in America, which means Asian American immigrants respect and trust their own cultures that they can not change so easily, I can say I am 1.5 Korean American generation, I still have trouble with my parents even I am in the middle of between America culture and Korean culture, even it is harder if they have language barrier, I like to help them to underes.

  • Can Hollywood be a Good Diplomat?
Can Hollywood be a Good Diplomat?America is the most influential nation today. People who live in the rest of the world care about our foreign policy, the next president, and our popular culture. Hollywood exports American films to the rest of the world; American culture and lives are watched by many foreign people via Hollywood films. Hollywood not only exports films but also represents America. In an article called “Hollywood Rules”, Herbert Buchsbaum writes, “By the late 1920s, 75 to 90 percent of the films shown in most countries were made in America. Movies became an ambassador for the American way of life” (Buchsbaum, 2). Hollywood is now one of the important massagers who connect America to the rest of the world through Hollywood films. As a diplomat, Hollywood delivers not only positive America but also as many as negative America such as gun violence, extreme representation of sexuality, stereotypes and cultural imperialism. Hollywood and other poplar cultures should be seriouize the private ownership of gun, many people in other culture would never understand the method of self defense. When they see the flying bullets and the sound of bombs in Hollywood films, they would think that America is a violent country, and Americans are aggressive. The cultural differences between America and other nations also make Americans promiscuous. Martha Bayles writes in her article, “Now Showing: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly Americans”, “A Syrian teacher of English asked us plaintively for help in explaining American family life to her students. She asked, ‘Does “Friends” show a typical family?’”(Bayles, 487) People who live in other cultures can’t understand the sitcom “Friends”. In some cultures, people marry young, and there are many cultures which restrict women’s sexual freedom. Regardless of good or bad, Hollywood films would represent Americans sexually over active to many people in other cultures. We understand the characters in the sitcom “Friends”, but some pessages about lifestyles, economics, and politics. Religious leaders complained about Hollywood’s constant emphasis on crime and sex” (Buchsbaum, 2). Hollywood emphasize on crime and sex because these are the major appeals to youth culture. Teenagers of many other cultures easily accept American culture because it is represented provocative by Hollywood. James Petras writes in his article “Cultural Imperialism in the late 20th Century” “Imperial entertainment and advertisement target young people who are most vulnerable to U.S. commercial propaganda. The message is simple and direct: 'modernity' in associated with consuming U.S. media products.” (Petras, 1). Although violence and sex which Hollywood uses to advertise films would appeal to many youth of other countries, many adults of other countries would criticize against Hollywood films because they would think that Hollywood films make their kids aggressive and sexually active. Exporting Hollywood films is a good profit for our econfilm industry. Modern computer technology made Hollywood films even more fantastic, and there aren’t any nations who would spend more money on a film than Hollywood. Hollywood films are admired by many nations who imports Hollywood films. They admire the technology as well as our life style. On the other hand, people in other countries call Hollywood imperialistic; they say that Hollywood is forcing American ways of lives and values through Hollywood who is the Mecca of the film industry. James Petras writes in his article “Cultural Imperialism in the late 20th Century”, “In the political sphere, cultural imperialism plays a major role in dissociating people from their cultural roots and traditions of solidarity, replacing them with media created needs which change with every publicity campaign” (Petras, 1). Hollywood represents our politics to the rest of the world. For example, there are many films about American victories over Russians or North Koreans; there are also many films should also respect values of other cultures, and they should able to represent the world because America is the most influential nation today. In an article called “American images in today’s France”, Barnett Singer writes “After September 11, we heard a lot about America as an exporter of democracy, or more perfected democracy, around the world; but in the French case, the snapping up of today’s American movies computer culture, clothes styles and some of its eating and drinking proclivities has eroded what is typically French about the country, which will inevitably weaken its civilization” (Singer, 2). Hollywood has many roles. It is an entertainment, a profitable industry, a media and a diplomat. Hollywood has tremendous duties, and it is hard to satisfy all the duties. Film makers of Hollywood should think about all the duties of Hollywood before they make films. They should never forget the fact that they could represent positive America as well as negative America through a film.W.
