Not many people know that electric cars were invented prior to gasoline engine vehicles and disappeared pretty quickly, because they had a limited range of travel, and were too big and too expensive. However, the electric car became the topic again recently, as a result of technical innovations. The electric car now plays an important role as a part of a solution to energy, environmental, and economic problems. All the oil on the earth will be exhausted within 100 years. Many people feel anxious about this fact and insist that the global community reduce the rate of dependence on oil products such as gasoline and diesel from this point onward for the benefit of future generations. One of the first things these people think of is the electric car. Since people consume most gasoline and diesel for their cars, it is true that motorists can save a lot of oil and reduce the rate of dependence on it by substituting conventional vehicles with electric ones. According to Corey Sandstrom, dealer of Honda Automobiles in Lewiston, Idaho; the Honda Civic hybrid, which uses both gasoline and electricity as its power sources, can run 51 miles with one gallon of gas while other conventional cars can run only around 30 miles with the same amount of gas.

This fact makes every society have a different culture. As a Korean, I know about Korean culture very well, and as an international student in the United Sates of America, I’m experiencing and learning American culture, which is quite different from Korean. I can find many differences between these two cultures, but I would focus on the three most interesting differences: the habit of wearing shoes, giving a tip, and the relationship between the old and young.First, American people have totally different habit in wearing shoes from Korean people. When I came to America first, I was surprised when I saw people kept wearing their shoes when they were at home, and I even felt guilty when I walked about in my house wearing my shoes, because Korean people never wear their shoes at home. There is a place people take their shoes off and put them in at the entrance of every house in Korea. It is very natural for Korean people not to wear their shoes at home. Once a service man came to my house to install cable modem, he came into my living room with his shoes on. That embarrassed me, and I asked him to take his shoes off. That demand seemed to embarrass him also. Instead of taking off his shoes, he took clothes out of his bag and covered his shoes with them. As Korean people feel uncomfortable wearing shoes indoors, American people seem uncomfortable taking shoes off indoors.Park 2Next, there is something America has but Korea doesn’t. In America, wherever you get served by other people such as eating dinner at a restaurant, taking a taxi and having a hair cut in a barbershop, you are supposed to give a tip for their services. American people seem to think that it is very reasonable to give a tip after they get served. However, there is no concept of tip and no one gives a tip even after getting a really good service in Korea. At first, this new culture confused me a lot. I didn’t know how much tip I should have given after having meals at restaurants, so I often asked waitress how much tip usually people give in order to imitate other people. Now, I’m a lot more used to giving a tip, but it’s still confusing to me sometimes.Finally, I would like to compare the attitude of young people toward old people in America with the one in Korea. When I saw the relationship between teachers and students or parents and children of American people, I found out that it was quite different from Korea’s one in many ways. In Korean, there is an honorific form, and young people should use it when they talk to old people. In addition, there are many honorific titles, and young people should use them when they call old people. There are so many etiquettes concerned with the relationship between young people and old people. For example, young people are not supposed to leave a dinner table before older people finish their meals, and young people should not smoke in front of older people, even if they don’t know each other. Sometimes, I still feel uncomfortable calling my teachers by names, because it will never happen in Korea.I have lived in Korea for 24 years and gotten used to its culture. Now, I’m living in America, and experiencing and learning a new culture. That is not easy to learn and get used to a new culture; however, I’d rather say it is a pretty exciting experience than a hard time. I can find myself being more used to American culturePark 3day by day, and learning a new culture everyday. I expect myself to be a more Americanized person sooner or later.

Among those many relationships, I consider the relationships with a family, friend and competitor as the most influencing and important relationships over me, because those three kinds of people have the most influence on me and can even change my course in life. My younger brother, Woo Sung, has played these three roles in my life so well that I can’t think of a more important relationship than the one between him and me.We have been together as family members, specifically as brothers, for 22 years. We have experienced all kinds of things together, both happy things and bad things, and he has always been with me whenever I need him and I have for him. Those experiences have made our relationship deeper and deeper and let us know the importance of each other. Once our father’s business was ruined, we lost all our possessions and had to move to a small underground room. It was a very sad incident for us; however, at that time, we consoled each other in sorrow, and that made our sorrow gone.His worth as a friend has made our relationship even closer. He is one of the most sensitive and generous people I’ve ever known. Those two personalities of him are more than enough to make him my best friend. In addition, we know each other very well and understand each other perfectly. We have talked to each other about our worries and secrets without hesitation and tried our best to help each other. Also we have spent a lot a time together doing pleasurable things. Whenever I am totally stressed out by studying English and being lonely here, I call him. He always gives me warm words and makes me feel better.A competitor is the best incitement for me to be a better person, and that’s why I think the relationship with competitors is one of the most important things. As a competitor, my brother is one of the best also. He is good at most of things which I’m good at, and it makes me try harder without conceit. He also has many talents which I don’t have, so I have to try my best to keep up with him. When I was a middle school student, I was one of the best students in mathematics in my school. That made me inwardly pride myself on my ability and I didn’t study as hard as before. At that time, my brother became a middle school student at the same school and he was even better in mathematics than I was. I received impetus from it and could concentrate my attention on my study again.My brother is the most important person for me as a family, friend and competitor. He truly plays all three roles perfectly. Nobody means more than he does to me and nobody can be a better person for me. That’s why I consider the relationship between him and me as the most important one.

It is not strange to see Korean students in many countries such as China, Japan, England, France, and Italy. This is not just a passing phase of Korea, and the number of Korean students studying abroad is increasing continuously. There are three reasons that Korean students go abroad to study: They want to learn foreign languages, escape the Korean’s narrow gate to an upper school, and have new knowledge as soon as possible.The range of Korean students studying abroad is not limited to college students. Students of all grades and ages come out of Korea to other countries during their vacation to learn foreign languages. Since most of Korean businesses are related to other countries, it is very important to know how to speak at least one foreign language to have competitive power. If someone can speak another language, he or she will have a lot more chances to succeed in Korea. That is why many Korean students go to other countries to study foreign languages.Next, it is not easy for Korean students to enter colleges after they graduate high school. Every year, about nine hundred thousand students take a college entrance examination, and less than four hundred thousand students can enter these colleges. During their high school time, they go to school at seven o’clock in the morning, and study there until ten or eleven o’clock in the evening. Their school lives are full with nothing but study. In Korea, it is called the ‘exam hell.’ Some students go to other countries to continue their studies after they fail to survive in the ‘exam hell’ or some students don’t even start their competition and just go to other countries to escape it. This is the second reason why many Korean students come out of their country.Frankly, Korea still falls behind America and other developed European countries in science and technology. It is not too much to say that most of the new theories and techniques which are originated in America or European countries. As a result, Korean students have to wait one or two years to learn new information until it comes to Korea, and that makes Korean students fall behind the others. The best way to learn a new skill as quickly as others is to come to the place that the skill is originated. Now, many Korean students are in America or European countries, and they are learning new information without waiting for it.At this moment, many Korean students are going to other countries to study. Some of them want to learn foreign languages, some of them want to escape the ‘exam hell’, and some of them want to learn new information as quickly as other people all over the world.
