THE LAST EMPEROR is the true story of Pu-iy, the last monarch of China that changed drastically during his lifetime.The Last Emperor is started with the scene of the Manchuria in 1950. Pu-iy was a war criminal at the train station. Just he wanted to kill himself. In that time, Just China had changed from "Republic of China" to "People's Republic of China".He was indulging in reminiscences. AD 1908, He became an Emperor from a son of an Imperial family. He was 4 years old. In 19th century and the beginning of 20th, China had changed by the West. The Opium War was begun. Although it loses the Hong-Kong and Macao, the West wanted more a privilege from Qing Dynasty. And China People had met the flowering of China civilization.Pu-iy’s English tutor, his name was Reginald Johnston. He wasn't really a teacher - his real job was to act as a go-between for Pu-iy and the English government. However, he did help Pu-iy learn to speak English, and he and the boy became close friends. Pu- iy was heaperor and President was appeared instead of him. The republic that Sun Yat-sen and his associates envisioned evolved slowly. The revolutionists lacked an army, and the power of Yuan Shikai began to outstrip that of parliament. In August 1912 Song Jiaoren, one of Sun’s associates, founded a new political party. The party, the Guomindang was an amalgamation of small political groups, including Sun's Tongmeng Hui. And Pu-iy lose all power about China. He knew that he was the only one of the Chinese.He lose his mother because of the opium. Finally he had to leave the royal palace in Peking. In 1917, when Pu-iy was 9, a warlord decided to restore him to the throne. Chang's army surrounded Peking, and Pu iy released a decree stating that he was the emperor once again. Leaders of the republican government accused the monarchists of using Pu iy as a puppet. He put the blame on treason, conspiracy and, reactionary in 1950 in Manchuria. He indulged in reminiscences about the life in Manchuria in into left- and right-wing factions, and the Communist bloc within it was also growing.As Pu-iy learned more about the world, he realized that he was a prisoner in the palace. He tried to escape by bribing the guards at the gate. They took his money, then betrayed him. He never made it outside the palace walls.Oneday Pu-iy’s advisors decided that it was time for him to marry. They gave him photos of four Manchu girls and told him to pick one. He wanted the modernized girl. So he choose a beautiful girl. She was Wan Jung, later known as Elizabeth.The teenaged former emperor traveled by limousine to the mansion. Men shook his hand and called him Mr. Pu-iy. For the first time in his life, Pu-iy was being treated as an ordinary citizen - and he loved it.Pu-iy and his family moved to Tienjin, on the coast of China, where the Japanese had a lot of power. Pu-iy rented a mansion. His second wife demanded a divorce. Divorce was unprecedented in the history of the imperial family.In 1928, revoluemperor was a figurehead with very little say even over his personal life.During World War II, Japan used Manchukuo as a military-industrial base. At the end of the war Soviet forces invaded Manchuria. But in 1945, it ended Japan failed the war. Pu-iy was bound by Russia Military. And in 1959 he was finally released after thought control. He was in his fifties.He lived as a gardener in Peking after released. He saw the prison head with the Red-guards. He was no more a prison just only a criminal, like the past of Pu-iy’s. He was only of royal blood. He was an Emperor. He was a just man who want be a King. He was a criminal. And He died in 1967 as a citizen of china.I really don’t know what the director of the movie wanted to say. He tried to express the Chinese history, or Pu-iy’ whole life. Whatever it is, I know that China changed a lot in the Pu-iy’s lifetime like Pu-iy.The West forced China. But On October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was formally established, with its n. And in 1967 Pu-iy was dead.China declared independence by itself and they closed the doors from the West. Chinese has developed China as communist country by them. Whichever it did well or not, China is starting to the top of the world. One hundred years ago, China was invaded by the West and the neighboring country. But now in 21 century, China has prepared a great power in the world.“They are so young,” Pu-iy said to the Red Guard as before Hsi-tai-hou said to Pu-iy that “You are so young” when she met Pu-iy first time. It means that Pu-iy is too young to rule over China. And It means that China’s future is going to be dark. The direct of this movie is the west people. So he is thinking that China is worse than before. He want china to open the door. “Open the door”. Open the door to west.They have so much pain. Such as 5.4 Movement, 5.30 Movement, 9.18 Incident and so on. They made the nation by themselves. But they are success. And now, They are opening the door-“bamboo curtain”.
