Digital Media as Alternative Media

DIGITAL MEDIA CAN BE ALTERNATIVE MEDIA?Digital media is changing the way that contents is uncovered, gathered and distributed. If searching for the contents was the most important development of the last decade, sharing the contents is the most critical of the next.When thinking about the characteristics of digital media, it’s ongoing, real time, two-way collaboration. The distinction between producer and consumer will grow increasingly hazy. Reading the news is no longer passive, it’s active. Social networks and mobile tools allow people to better share news anytime, anywhere. They actively participate in developing and distributing stories.In new multi-platform media environment, the contents is becoming portable, personalized, and participatory.Nowadays, platform is moving from offline to online and we all know about the importance of new media, digital media. Digital media provide an alternative space for deviant, dissident or non-traditional views, and allow for the creation of new, alternative communities that can provide a voice for those normally marginalized by the mainstream media. However, some questions to solve still remains.The first question is if digital media is profitable and it could be a sustainable market. Regarding this question, I think the future of digital media is bright. Online platform is also moving from the Internet to mobile. Mobile platform can be beneficial to media industry because of its high portability & accessibility. And, advertising in digital media is still a kind of blue-ocean, and it has a good growth potential. Many companies expect that it could be an effective advertising. To develop new business models to help increase revenues, the most important thing is contents should be differentiated and has its own power and color.Also, we have the other questions to digital media, which is how to filter a lot of noise and false information which are generated on digital media and how to protect the copyright of the contents.Then, I’ve thought if we can consider that all contents on the Internet and mobile can be alternative media. My answer is no. There should be some criteria to clarify digital media as alternative media. First, it should not be under the control of governments or any power. It should have its independency. Second, it should not be a personal website. Anyone can’t be a journalist. Journalists need to carry the responsibility of their own contents. Third, it should be regularly updated not a single shot.Wrapping up my opinion about digital media and its role as alternative media, I’ve had these following conclusions.Nowadays, contents is more about ‘stories & information’. Through digital media, people want thoughts, experiences, possibilities, and examples. The contents that can move people and have a great power will survive in the near future.And, I don’t think digital media do not just confront mass media culture, but it should be able to handle the contents correctly with a sense of responsibility.Finally, I’d like to say that it’s not the end of ‘the old, it’s the complete convergence of Old and New.

[일본 문학] 츠구미를 읽고

200100681 영어학과 김은정이번 레포트를 계기로 평소에 자주 읽지 않았던 일본 문학 작품 중 좋은 것을 읽어야지...라고 생각하던 중, 일본 현대 문학의 대표적인 작가인 ‘요시모토 바나나’의 『츠구미』를 읽었다. 비교적 내용은 흥미롭고, 쉬웠으며, 소녀에서 여자로 바뀌고 있는 주인공들이 지금 나의 시기와 비슷해(나는 조금 느린 감이 있나..?!) 많은 공감을 하였다. 우선, 그다지 특별하지 않은 줄거리임에도 불구하고, 진부하지 않았다. 또한, 츠구미라는 독특한 캐릭터가 흡입하는 힘은 대단하여, 표지를 열고나서 한번도 쉬지 않고 끝까지 읽어 버렸다. (이것은 나에게 있어 정말 놀라운 일이다.)이 소설은 사촌 사이인 마리아와 츠쿠미, 그의 언니 요코, 그리고 츠쿠미의 남자친구 쿄이치가 바닷가 마을에서 어느 여름, 아름다운 추억들을 만들며 진정한 어른으로 성장해가는 모습을 그리고 있다. 먼저, 마리아는 첩의 딸로 (아버지가 자상하고 마리아와 엄마를 사랑해주시지만...) 남들과는 다른 환경에서 자랐다. 남들에게는 평범할 아버지의 사랑과 가족의 단란함이 그녀에게는 매우 특별하고, 소중한 것이었기 때문에, 마리아는 소중한 것이 무엇인지 알았으며, 그것들을 간직하는 법도 알았다. 책을 읽으며, 평범하고, 친구 같으면서도 왠지 특별한 것이 있는 마리아가 나는 좋아졌다. 츠구미는 조금 특별한 아이이다. 그녀는 태어나면서부터 몸이 약해서 가족과 주변 사람들은 츠구미의 온갖 짜증과 별난 행동을 받아준다. 또한, 주위 사람들을 신경 쓰지 않고, 그녀는 자기가 하고 싶은 대로 하며, 그런 행동에 전혀 아무렇지도 않아한다. 그녀는 자신만의 깊은 세계에서 살며, 그 세계를 그 누구에게도 보여주지 않는다. 마리아만 제외하고...(마리아와 츠구미는 ‘도깨비 편지’ 사건으로 츠구미가 유일하게 마음을 열어 놓는 친구 사이가 되었다.) 아마, 그녀의 이러한 성격은 남들보다 죽음을 더 가까이에서 생각하고, 언제 이 세상을 떠나야 할지 몰랐기 때문에 만들어진 것이 아닐까? 그녀는 사람들과의 이별을 두려워하고 있었는지도 모르겠다. 그래서, 사람들에게 마음을 열어 놓지 않았을지도... 그래서, 이런 츠구미가 밉지 않고, 오히려 가깝고, 안타깝게 느껴졌는지도 모르겠다. 아래의 츠구미가 한 말로 츠구미에 대해서 잘 알 수 있었다. “나는 정체를 알 수 없는 사람, 항상 환경에 잘 적응하지 못하고, 자기도 모르는 자기 자신을 막을 수가 없어서 어디로 가고 있는 지도 모르는데, 그래도 올바른 사람이면 좋겠다.”이 소설은 무엇인가와 ‘이별’하는 것에 대해서 말하고 있다. 마리아가 동경에 있는 대학에 입학하여 10년 동안 살았던 바닷가 마을을 떠날 때 느끼는 그 감정..... 무엇인가와 익숙하고 정들었던 것을 떠나, 새로운 것을 맞이하는 것은 서운하고, 두렵고, 설레는 복잡한 감정이다. 책의 내용 중, 헤어짐에 대해서 공감이 가는 부분이 있어, 적어 보았다. “혼자서, 황혼 속을 걸으며, 야마모토야로 돌아가는 길, 나는 조금 쓸쓸했다. 이 여름의 끝이면 잃게 될, 고향의 길을 오가는 이 나른함을 마음에 담아두고 싶었다. 마치 모습이 변하는 저녁 하늘처럼 온갖 종류의 이별로 가득한 이 세상을, 하나도 잊지 않고 싶었다.” 나도 고향이 바닷가이다. 처음, 대학 때문에 20년 정도 살던 고향과 부모님, 친구들을 떠나 서울로 올라올 때, 마음이 복잡했다. 서울에 올라오기 전날 밤, 잠 못 이루며 내가 했던 생각들이 이 소설에 그대로 적혀있었다. 그래도 4년 정도 지난 지금, 나는 이 곳 생활에 어느 정도 익숙해졌고, 예전의 내가 떠나고 싶지 않았던 것들은 좋은 추억으로 내 인생의 소중한 것이 되었다. 어릴 적, 마리아, 츠구미, 요코는 좋아하는 TV 만화 시리즈가 끝나자 허전함에 그 날 밤 잠을 자지 못한다. 다들 이런 경험이 있을 것이다. 그렇다. 마리아, 츠구미, 요코는 서로 방법은 달랐지만, 이별을 받아들이는 것을 배우면서 성장했던 것이다. 그것은 나도 마찬가지이다. 다만, 마음을 닫고 있던 츠구미는 쿄이치를 통해 세상과 다가서는 법을 배우게 된다. 쿄이치가 한 말을 적어 본다. “인간은 결국 새로운 것을 만나면서, 조금씩 변해가잖아. 많은 것을 잊어버리기도 하고, 내 버리기도 하고, 어쩔 수 없이 그렇게 되잖아. 할 일이 많아서겠지만....” 츠구미는 쿄이치의 개 ‘겐고로’의 죽음, 쿄이치와의 짧은 이별에서 다시 태어난다. 그 동안의 세상에 대한 두려움을 버리고서......
