  • About Truth
Kuk Hyun HwangProf. TombroEN 12104/07/10About TruthIn 1950, the great Japanese movie Rashomon came to sudden prominence in the world cinema creating a sensation. The story is about a samurai being attacked and his wife being raped by the notorious bandit Tajomaru. The samurai ends up dead and Tajomaru is captured shortly afterward and put on trial. The wife's story is so strange, that they had to bring a psychic to allow the murdered man to give his own testimony. He tells yet another completely different story. Finally, a woodcutter who found the body reveals that he saw the whole thing, and his version is again completely different from the others. It is very interesting when people have different points of view of a single incident. It’s as if there is no true reality or false reality, there is simply a chaotic mixing of truth-telling and lying. When people tell something which they want nobody to know, they are frightened of the result of the exposure. That is the reason people distnother’s point of view can be distorted. People usually add some extras to the original story and twist it with their experience and knowledge. Sometimes it happens to have its advantage. When I read the poem “Daddy”, I might twist Plath’s truth. I felt the author’s anger toward her father the first time I read it. However, I came to realize this is a confession about her father whom she hates and misses at the same time. In the sixth line, she says, “I have had to kill you.” I thought she felt great hatred toward her father. On the other hand, she says in the fourteenth line, “I used to pray to recover you.” I guess no matter what type of person her father may have been, she misses her father. She just hates the father who left her when she was so young and did not protect her from this tough world. Actually, this is just my guess. Nevertheless, nobody knows if this is true or false except Plath. I am just guessing with my own unconfirmed information and creating a new story which shewn and constantly tortured herself with direct questions and expressions such as Why is life so tragic?(Mon, Oct 25th), I’m a failure as a writer (Fri, Apr,8th), and I’m old (Sat, Mar 20th). In her diary where she wrote of her true feelings about her excellent novels, she was always worried about how other people would evaluate her or her literary works. Why did she suffer from this kind of insecurity being the best feminist writer in the early 20th century? I believe people’s prejudice shook up her identity as a great novelist. On top of that, she even doubted the truth/reality which was that she was the best writer ever. I think if she believed in her own truth, even if some people made confuse herself with distorted truth, she would not have ended her life by suicide. Some people may say that others’ who have an objective point of view evaluation is closer to truth than their own. People tend to be more permissive with themselves than with other people. However, I do not believe the s a natural born killer and his cruel crimes must be punished in a prison. I do not insist that he was not guilty. However, I might understand why he committed such brutal crimes. He had been tortured by an untrue evaluation of himself by his mother, and had no chance to establish his identity. It made him think of himself as a loser, and he felt something special by using power to bring the opponent to his knees. I think, if someone had let him face the truth inside of him in his childhood, he may have lived a different life. The truth is sometimes twisted with the passing of time. People do not exactly capture every single scene like a CCTV. People usually recreate the thing they want to remember based on fragmentary memories.“We forget all too soon the things we thought we would never forget” (Didion, p.336)“Why did write down? In order to remember, of course, but exactly what was it I wanted to remember? How much of it actually happened? Did any of it? Why do I keep a notebook at alidify people’s conviction of truth. The truth should come from oneself because some facts can be distorted passing by others. People are living in a flood of information from a lot of mass media and the internet. It has been harder for people to distinguish what is true or not. I think people need to acquire the power of being confident and not to blame themselves for others’ twisting the truth of themselves. I strongly believe that the belief deep inside a person’s mind is the real truth. Most people used to question the truth inside them. When people face the question, they have to choose ether they believe in the truth for themselves like Didion or constantly doubt or wonders like Plath and Woolf. Although it would not be an arbitrary decision, I truly want to choose Didion’s life.Work Site Hyperlink "http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042876/plotsummary" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042876/plotsummary Hyperlink "http://blog.naver.com/battlewing?Redirect=Log&logNo=130086467363" http://blogT 1

  • The Establishment of Identity
Kuk Hyun HwangProf. TombroEN 12122/06/10The Establishment of IdentityPeople want to know themselves: who they are, where they belong, how to live, and what to do. Then, through self-examination, they become aware of themselves. This is their “identity”. Identity is influenced by one’s race, language, people, and especially culture. When I read “Talking in the New Land” and “The Achievement of Desire”, I thought about the authors’ identities. In the USA there are a lot of families in which two kinds of cultures coexist. It makes that immigrant family’s children become confused about their own personality earlier than normal children who usually establish their own identity during puberty. I believe that one’s identity is set by the culture in which a person has lived. If people create their identities with a firm belief based on a living culture, they would not suffer from the many conflicts caused by confusion of their identity for a long time. First of all, it is important that 1st genwhich they belong to establish their identity. In USA, there are a lot of families consisting of people who immigrated to America. Most 2nd or 3rd generations think they are American, and they do not find their identities from their parents’ cultures. For example, I met a Korean-American friend here. Her parents are 1st generation immigrants. She was born in New York and mainly hangs out with native Korean friends. Even though she does not speak Korean fluently, she is able to understand what people say in Korean. One day I asked her, “Don’t your parents dislike that you cannot speak Korean well?” She said, “My grandmother blamed my parents for not teaching Korean to me, but my parents accept the reality that I am an American.” She did not seem to be ashamed of not speaking Korean well and no one among her Korean friends blames her about that because her identity is surely as an American. However, some parents force their cultural behavior on their children or are unaware of their chil first day of a school, “There was a big pain in my head, I wanted to scream out my name.”(Edite Cunha, P544) Her teacher forced her to use the American pronounced name “Mary Edith”. She was really confused because she loved her name “Maria Edite”. I think she has been confused of her identity since she lost her real name. Her parents also made her feel more confused because her parents pressured her and relied on her to be an interpreter for them since she was a little girl. During that time she felt lost between the American and Portuguese cultures. Moreover, her parents didn’t understand the conflicts of identity establishment Edite was experiencing.I also believe if people form their own personalities with their parents’ support, they easily understand their parents’ culture. Sometimes 2nd or 3rd generations are in conflict with their parents because, although they may live in America as a native dwellers, their parents still live here as foreigners with green cards. It is reasonabl such as children wearing short garments or leaving the parents’ home even though they’ve reached adulthood. I think parents have to accept the reality that their children have been raised in America and influenced by American culture as a beacon in the night.“A teacher had said I was losing all trace of a Spanish accent.”(Richard Rodriguez) As he mentioned in his essay “The Achievement of Desire”, Rodriguez seemed to be proud of getting a real Anglo-American accent. I thought he set his identity as an American early. However, I came to realize he did not set a firm identity because of the lack of his parents’ understanding. I guess his parents believed family was more important than education. That was because they could not understand he only focused on studying and finally decided to go to a university far away from home. If his parents had paid more attention to him as he was developing his identity, he would not have a complex about his parents’ lack of concern of his high educatio establish her identity as an American. If her parents had, she would have never regretted having learned to speak English. She would be proud to be a part of American culture and also wouldn’t have felt the pain as her parents’ interpreter by setting differences between her parents and herself. In conclusion, all people go through an identity crisis in their childhood. Fortunately, most people get over it soon by creating their identity. However, some people suffer from confusion about their identity and may take a long time to overcome their confusion. I strongly believe it is really important for people to create their identity based on the culture in which they live now. On top of that, once their ego plant roots in their mind with water and sunshine (parents’ concern and understanding), they are able to bear fruits such as an understanding of other people and cultural diversity.Works CitedCunha, Edite. “Talking In A New Land.” Language Awareness: Readings for College Readers.9th eAT 5
