Globalization and its Impacton the European SocietyChulmin ParkMBA Globalization – Spring 2003IntroductionThe word globalization can be described in many different ways, in the last several years the definition of this word is used more frequently in an attempt to explain our relationship with other countries and states. It most commonly refers to the increasingly close economic ties among other countries. These ties include trade, travel, immigration, shared information sent over the Internet, increased investment in foreign countries, and an accelerated pace of technological advancement. All of these attributes coupled together have caused corporations to operate in many countries simultaneously, creating the most important aspect of globalization. As we proceed in to the 21st Century, the significance of globalization will change the way in which we conduct business in our every day life.In some respects this has been a centuries old phenomenon. Most recently, however, we are examinng, healthcare, financial services, training, hospitality, retailing, engineering, public or private sector competition is fierce. There is no shortage of competitively priced high quality products available from a selection of sources. What about customer service? Despite all the past pronouncements that the “customer is king”, most markets are not exactly bristling with service superstars. In an overwhelming majority of cases where we ask people on our surveys to describe memorable customer experiences, we still hear stories about disappointments or even worse. Realistically, competitors’ products will soon measure up to yours if they don’t already. The battle for the customer depends more and more on getting beyond customer satisfaction, in fact the trends of today shows that achieving satisfaction is no guarantee of future customer loyalty. The following are thoughts and ideas on creating value in the European society. Together they form a "Value Creating Strategic Matrix" (2) & (3) is secure, oligopolies will usually delay innovation to maximize their use of existing plant and equipment or introduce spurious innovations to maximize product differentiation. If other big firms challenge their control of a market, usually, they can speed up the introduction of more advanced technology and usually remain competitive mainly due to the size of the resources they have available. These barriers work on two levels absolute (entry) barriers and relative (movement) barriers. As business grows in size, the amount of capital required to invest in order to start a business also increases. As a result of these entry/movement barriers, the market can be divided into two main sectors -- an oligopolistic sector and a more competitive one. These sectors work on two levels within markets and within the economy itself. This situation in Europe has resulted in smaller firms in oligopolistic markets being squeezed by big business along side firms in more competitive markets. Being pro their borders. Take for instance Coca-Cola, it makes up 80 percent of sales outside of the United States. The meaning of “American Corporation” changes when only one-fifth of the corporation’s sales occur in the domestic market. (11) Intel, for example, is receiving a huge subsidy from Israel in exchange for building a large semiconductor facility there. Many times plants are essentially put up for bid, whichever country gives the company the best deal in terms of wages, skills, transportation costs, markets, taxes, and direct subsidies is rewarded by a corporate presence and the associated benefits. (11) Mercedes and BMW were able to negotiate large subsidies, such as, hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax reductions and expenditures directed at their needs with the states of Alabama and South Carolina. This globalization blurs national economic boundaries. Consider the accelerometer, a US$50 semiconductor chip that replaces about US$650 worth of mechanical sensors that control the nMany years ago in the first era of globalization, inequality improved in Western Europe as a consequence of declining transportation cost and emigration. These forces increased real wages and reduced land rents, with the gains to labor offsetting the losses to land. The opposite sets of forces were at work in the U.S. and other countries of recent settlement, in which inequality worsened. Among countries, it is argued that the pattern of divergence would have been considerably worse in the absence of globalization because openness is a key determinant of convergence. A comparison of inequality today suggests benefits, and factors other than globalization, such as poor government or low education levels, explain the rise in inequality. In order for the European economy to survive in this new global environment, it must create unique resources that add significant customer value to maintain global competitiveness. By accomplishing customer value and global competitiveness European compan-
First of all, I need to decide whether to utilize SRGA or not. Based on what I learned from the class, I would think that the answer of keeping the business depends on its financial results are positive or negative. Therefore, it looks like that I could figure it out by calculating some marketing math. However, it is not simple as it looks like because I should consider the impact of SRGA to SGA (Schweppes Ginger Ale). Besides, I need to consider the impact to Canada Dry and other CBNA divisions that are brother companies of Schweppes. There are some key values help me find out the SRGA’s financial results: Manufacturer’s sales price, Contribution margin, Break-even volume, and profit.

First, the population of Greensboro is expected to increase as time goes on. Second, the income of Greensboro is supposed to increase, too. Third, restaurant industry sales in the North Carolina will also increase.First, the data below represents that the population of Greensboro has been increased annually from 1990 to 2000. Moreover, the estimated population of 2010 will be 246,891. This population change shows that the increase in population would also cause the demand of food to increase.Greensboro Annual Population GrowthYearNumberNumber ChangePercent Annual Change1990183,894NANA1991185,7891,8951.0%1992186,3926030.3%1993187,0506580.4%1994188,2281,1780.6%1995192,3304,1022.2%1996194,0201,6900.9%1997202,3218,3014.3%1998205,1322,8111.4%1999208,8873,7551.8%2000223,89115,0047.2%2010246,89123,000NASource: Greensboro Planning Department Estimates; 1990 Population from 1990 City among firms in Chinese food industry can be proved by their menus. All of their products have the same price and very similar taste, except Chef’s Specialty. Since there are many restaurants that provide the same food at the same price and free delivery, if a restaurant neglects to catch up with other competitors’ quality or if it raises its price, customers will easily choose cheaper and more convenient sellers. This industry does not seem to require many specific assets. A building, cooking equipments, tables, chairs, and labors could be assets in the restaurant industry. These very low specific assets in the Chinese restaurant industry would be one of the reasons that this industry looks attractive. In the food industry, there has been relatively stable demand and supply over time. Of course, there had been good years and bad years, but as the income level of Greensboro has gone up steadily, the frequency of eating outside also has increased. Because increased population and incoe might want to get behind existing stores in taste or service. In other words, search goods should not have the problem of uncertainty and risk of failure to succeed. Consequently, in this case, experiencing goods would not have pioneer’s advantages. Seventh, the primary determinant of high exit costs seems to be the extent and specificity of the assets. As I referred above, there are no significant specific assets in the restaurant industry. Therefore, this low exit costs would not discourage entry into this Chinese food industry.D. Merits and drawbacks by buying a franchise or entering as an independent restaurant.Running an own restaurant is worth. It also provides the owner with own profits and guarantees job security status. On the other hands, people should think some disadvantages to run an independent restaurant. There is a chance to lose investment capital or assets. They might experience unexpected low income, or they need to prepare whole process to make a profit for long wk
Before determining which segment would be my primary target this year, it seems that investigating last year’s PDA market is needed. That is because last year’s sales rank based on some features shows several reasons why PDA1 was at the top and mine was at the bottom. Comparing other PDAs, PDA1 has several strong features: the cheapest price, the lightest weight, no internet monthly charge, and handwriting recognition. However, it simultaneously has several weak features too: no color, no wireless fax, no wireless internet, and no spreadsheet. These strong and weak features of PDA1 might explain the characteristic of consumers: non-mobile businesspersons and home computer owners. PDA1 users do not seem that they want to pay more dollars for using wireless technology. If PDA1 users are businesspersons, they might use it as they perform job tasks only in their office. And if PDA1 users are home computer owners, they might use it as they perform tasks in everyday life.
