My great passion has been making product.my ambition is to become a product designer. Honestly, I have started to interest in product design few months ago. Moreover, I never expected I am going to study product design. For all that, my foundation course led me to find my future. I think, started have interest on products when I was childhood and sometimes I made little objects for my parents and friends as a gift. Whenever I made something for gift I felt like I was a Santa Claus all the joy and love. From memory of the youth, I probably am prepared to be a product designer. In addition, product is the most attractive design for me because product designers create absolutely necessary things for our life unlike other designs. Accordingly, product design is the perfect mix of art and life. So, I might communicate with people through products. Also, I can touch and feel it directly, those reason, l really want to be a product designer. My foundation course is so much fun to learn design even though I used to worried too much about too late than others to study design and not sure I can follow their skills or not. As I'm preparing my portfolio, it leaves something to be desired as myself bonded to showing off how much I worth. But I'm sure this was a perfect chance to look. Our foundation course has provided me with opportunity to develop my own ideas and experiment new techniques. I have never learnt to blind drawing, continues line drawing before which has opened my eyes to new way of drawing. Also those skills are encourage me to draw and move away from my traditionally accuracy drawing style. I believe my best work has been in making things and I have enjoyed the ‘inside body’ project. We watched some films associated with ‘inside of body’’ first than we had idea sketches and made 10 samples. It’s simple however I was really interested in the extraordinary topic which alarmed my two eyes and developed my idea. Besides, I have been able to translate my figurative work into new disciplines. For 2 years I had studied Fashion and textile Design in my country. First time, I had entered to my college without any knowledge of textile design. However, I have really enjoyed my course because I could learn variety of new skills. During the college time, my course wasn’t hard. It is because our college has variety of machines for textile design as a knitting machine, dying machine, silk print machine and wall paper machine. On the other hand, especially, natural dying course helped me to grow up as a person. That course was very complicated and took a very long time to make colours..Also, we needed to measure the time with different materials. Therefore, I spent days and nights on the projects to have perfect colours with my group. After this project, I gained cooperation and patience. One of my most favorite designer is Philippe Starck who able to design in variety field. I couldn’t believe him because he is incredibly can do every design. Especially, he designed a lot of product which seem simple and modern, however, to my thought; he already knows what people want and like it. I have read his article before “I always makes products with respect and love to my customer”Last year, I have been to Venice for school trip. The trip was great opportunity to know famous artists and works. We have been to the ‘Biennale’ and ‘Arsenale’. Raquel Paiewonsky remains even today a memory in my mine. Actually, she is very famous in my country. However, I had never chance to see the really work before. I felt so glad to visit to the biennale. Back to her works, most of her work seems like creepy and cruel toys because she used fingers and heads of some dolls and was producing new work. In my view, she has a peculiar talent and a vigorous imagination for making product. There is an idiom, “have the unbroken passion and patience then, you would get light of your life” the reason I have taken this work as my watchword is because this word has been proven through my all the experiences. Even thought the passion was not always solution for all the matters, but I think it can be an important source of success. i do not think that I have talent and ability on design. Nevertheless, I have a strong passion and a firm faith. Furthermore, I believe that my untiring efforts will be rewarded to me some day. I feel that to be your student is a wonderful opportunity for me to gain and study more experience in order to become a product designer someday. I am ready for a new challenge. Give me a chance to attend to your school and I will do my best to come true my dream.
After the First World War, modernism has evolved in order to defeat instable social environment including unemployment, poverty, and depression. After that, as the world became a society for people, ways to make many products with less money has been looked for and the industry was standardized for the public. Also, development in engineering allowed mass production, and many products have become popular. Criteria to choose the right product and interest for those products emerged from consumers. The principle of the modernism in the 20th century which was most influential on consumers' culture principles seems to be the customers' standards and wills to buy products. We are living today, the modern society. This means that we do not have direct experiences of the past, though we may know the history. Today, we can choose and purchase what we need right away, but in old days, people had to for work days or even weeks to make simple clothes. When they needed a stylish dress, they had to ct simplified, standardized industrial furniture at a reasonable price’ (Modernism Scandinavian Furniture, 1963 p44) The modernism movement started as a way to bridge the gap between the poor and the rich therefore they began to produce inexpensive and reasonable products for the general public, not just for the privileged few. Also, in this period, functionality and efficient design without decoration and manifestation gets to be loved. It's because the product which was convenient and useful in living was loved much than the one with an esthetic element. Thanks to this, design gets simpler and material gets diversified. New materials such as iron, glass, plastics for example, gets implemented from existing stone or wood which had been used. These various changes were sufficient to satisfy the purchasing desire of consumers. As an aftereffect, volume production started and companies tried to make products for the public continuously. ‘Consumer culture identifies freedom with private c have different styles. “A continual process of purification … to cut down to the simplest possible elements of four legs, a seat and combined top rail and armrest” (Hans J. Wegner) I believe that it’s the answer to Scandinavia style. Certainly, it’s the practical use of design which resigns the unnecessary decorations and functions. Therefore, its suitable words would be ‘simple’ and ‘basic’. He had the instinct to combine both human being and nature together, which laid emphasis on his chairs. The result, among all his works, wood textures were most significant material used. In spite of different designs, they all looked comfortable and make me want sit on his chair. Therefore, when I look at his pieces, it seemed that he considered creating them with a great interest of living style and recognition of usefulness. Although we wouldn’t say the word fresh, his works continued to gain in popularity since 1950 and on top of that, his works wonderfully matches and it suitable for everywhon was encouraged even more enthusiastically than in Europe where manual labor was cheaper and more available’ (An introduce to design and culture in the 20th century, 1986 P5) this shows, America was focused on trade more than any other countries. Unless, Hans J. Wegner was focused on naturalism, Charles Eames made efforts for low cost and experimented in new materials. He was the most popular designer in mid of 20th century. His concept was “the least materials and the simplest process of manufacture can product most beautiful and functional product.” Therefore, he planned thoroughly a more realistic basis on developing manufacture. Also, he was a real hard worker who had been working on the process of manufacture for a rational price. A lazy person who talks too much, but talks were the consequence of an active person, his piece seems to show his human nature. I think his chairs are the chair that was truly made for a consumer. Therefore, in the whole history of humanism based on motendency of art changes under this simple theory. As we can't predict future but we can see and feel things, Modernism also appeared from the needs of the present and past. ‘We are formally free and equal when we go to market, unconstrained in our choices by legally fixed status or culture prohibitions.’(Consumer culture & modernity, 1997 p27)From this point of view, the present, convenient and functional life to basic supply and demand culture has been formed by Modernism.Han J. Project Runaway, Red Shoe, and Multicolored meRed, white, blue, and black sheets of colored garments turned into a fascinated luxurious clothes. It was television show, Bravo’s Project Runaway, choosing the best designer from various contestants. Four years ago, I watched the show from Korea and it gave me a chance to see the new world. Austin Scarlett, winner of the Project Runaway, was drawing and sewing the clothes at F.I.T. Scarlett’s talents and progressive design skills that he performed at the show surprised me. Also, Amsale Aberra, a judge from the Project Runaway and a wedding dress designer who graduated from F.I.T, is working with Scarlett. Aberra’s sense of styles and passions toward the fashion influenced me to have interest in F.I.T.My father, who spends time on the other side of the world for working, bought me a Mary Jane’s shoes when I was young. Pair of Mary Jane’s Red shoes alarmed my two eyes because it carried the classic designs among the cuteness. I started to have interest on the fashions and sometimes I wore mother’s miniskirts and colorful shoes. Whenever I wore mother’s clothes I felt like I was walking in the sky embracing all the joy and the love. From memory of the youth, I probably am prepared to be a shoes designer.Turing into the ages of teen, I studied in painting within the desire and love. During the college year, I started to major in textile and fashion. Since college did not have a major in accessory, I need to place myself into a majoring in textile, indeed, I enamored into the natural colors. I spent days and nights on the projects to have perfect colors.Graduating from the college, professor recommended me to a work in the interior design stylist, which works involved as creating ad, displaying interiors at the huge malls. That time, I was only a fashionable designer who loves the shoes, just like the other women. From time to time, I drew the shoes that I wish to wear and then ordered my own shoes to the factory that I designed. It was the beginning of gaining interest in designing a shoe.It was two years ago, that I decided to be a shoe designer. I saw a Korean shoes designer named Jinny Kim, who graduated from F.I.T, in the magazine. Jinny Kim had a refined and unique sense of styles which influenced many Korean shoe designers. Jinny Kim also studied fashion in Korean, yet, to purse her dream, she continued to study at F.I.T choosing the major as accessories. Jinny Kim’s shoes are famous and are also admired by many female Korean celebrities. Moreover, Jinny Kim’s shoes are found in Nordstrom (store), Diavolina (L.A store), and Revolveclothing website.Jinny Kim’s designs of shoes also inspired me to pursue my dream as a shoe designer. Mary Jane’s shoes and the Project Runaway lead me a path. It could be a coincidence but it also could be a destiny to be a shoe designer I believe. Even more, it is worth of quitting my jobs and leaving my families and friends behind to reach my dream here at F.I.T, although I miss them so much.Within the passions and desires towards the fashion, I believe myself that my name will be famous like the other designers, such as Clavin Klein, Micheal Kors, Norma Kamali, and David Chu, who are graduated from F.I.T. It is a dream school for me to study at F.I.T and I realized that I need to study at the place that gives out the opportunity to become a designer. I am prepared for a new challenge and I believe that my life will be change by studying at F.I.T.Furthermore, I believe that my countless efforts will be rewarded to me some day. I feel that to be your student is a wonderful opportunity for me to gain and study more experience in order to become a designer someday. It will be honor for me to study here at F.I.T, which surrounded by fashion trends. I sure will do my best to not regret of coming here at U.S.A.
How has the U.S. Influenced My Country? My country is South Korea. I lived there for 24years. Korea during the last24years has affected different countries. Korea is developed and change. Manyother countries influenced Korea. Mostly, the U.S. influenced Korea. I think the U.S.Influenced many franchiser companies, language, and entertainment.Foremost, the U.S. influenced Korea franchiser companies. Even around fiveyears ago, Korea didn’t have franchiser companies. However, a few years ago, suddenlymany U.S. companies came to Korea. For example, U.S. franchiser companies made StarBucks, Coffee Bean, and T. G. I. Fridays in Korea. At that time, many Korea people thoughtit was wonderful. I also like franchiser companies. Mostly, I like Coffee Bean because CoffeeBean makes peaceful. When I lived Korea, I usually went to the Coffee Bean. I studied in coffeeBean and hung out with my friends. Now, many Korea people use franchiser companies. Also, many U.S. franchiser companies proved successful in Korea. Therefore, many Koreafranchiser companies constituted. In addition, The U.S. influenced Korea language. When I went to middleschool, many students and teachers didn't think English was important. Therefore, I studiedbasic English on the middle school. However, suddenly a lot of Korea people learn English, andmany people left Korea. Also, many people use the English words. If I want to get job or goschool, I have to take an English exam. And Korea people a lot of money spend to learnEnglish. Until now Korea people think English very important more than Korea. Moreover, The U.S. influenced Korea entertainment. Now many Korea peoplelike Hollywood stars. Hollywood stars have something different things. Most of all Korean starshave not a minute to themselves. However, Hollywood stars are having free in action. Therefore, many Hollywood stars do have an every day's spree. For example, Paris Hilton has a good timeevery day. Paris Hilton usually goes to the bar and she plays with her friends in the bar.Sometimes, Paris Hilton is rather indifferent to her famous. Also she is very fashionable. ParisHilton makes set the fashion. Thus, when Paris Hilton wears some cloth, next day manypeople want to buy it. So Korea young people want to play looks like Hollywood stars. And theeyes of the Korea young people were center upon Hollywood stars. Many Korea shoppingmalls sell the Hollywood style things. Also many Korea people want to see a lot of Americamovies and TV shows. Therefore, now Korea theater put on the screen America movies onscreen more than Korea movies.America people life style is better than Korea. I think now many Korea people want tolook like American. Few years ago, Korea people life was hard and busy. Therefore, manyKorea people were busy working every day. Therefore, Korea people want to more comfortableand happy life, so the U.S. influenced franchiser companies, language, and entertainment.Several years later, maybe I can see a better Korean life. Also I think proper influence is goodFor Korea.
I prefer a small cityNow I live in a big city. But fifteen years ago, I lived in a small city. Thesmall city name is Won-Dang. I miss the Won-Dang. When I live the Won-Dang, I feltcomfortable and peaceful. However, now, I live in a big city in Korea. Big city name isIlsan. Also, Ilsan is good city. Yet, Ilsan has some bad things. Therefore, I prefer to live in asmall city because a small city has fewer people, fewer buildings and less traffic.Foremost, a small city has fewer people. When I lived in Won-Dang,Won-Dang have fewer people. At that time, I made many friends. When I made friends,we are soon friendly and until now my Won-Dang friends and I still friendly. However, now I live in Ilsan. I don’t know who my neighbor is. One day I was going tomy house around midnight. Then one guy followed me. I was so scared. Therefore, I wasrunning. However, when I arrived my house, I noticed he was my neighbor. I wasconfused and my felt like so sad. The neighbor and I didn’t know each other. And most of allthe neighborhood was busy. Therefore, neighborhood and I didn’t have time to talk.In addition, a small city has fewer building. When I lived in a Won-Dang, therebuildings were smaller and lower. Won-Dang buildings were under the five stories. Therefore, every building didn’t have an elevator. Before I moved in Ilsan, my househad also just five stories in apartment. At that time, every day I was going to up stairsby walking. I thought it is not difficult to me. However now, I live in Ilsan. My family live in anapartment. My apartment has until 20 layer place. I'm live in three layers. But, I usually use theelevator. And when I lived in Won-Dang, everywhere is near to my house. Therefore, when I wentto somewhere, I can go to somewhere by walking. However, now, Ilsan has a lot of building. Therefore, sometimes I forgot my way and difficult to find some place. Also, if I wanted to gosomewhere, I have to use cars or transportation. And spend more time and money. Moreover, small city has less traffic. When I lived Won-Dang, I usuallyplay outside. There are has less traffic. Then I didn’t notice about traffic jam. And I wasthinking traffic is useful for me. Now, I notice that Ilsan have a lot of traffic and a lot oftraffic jam everyday and every time. So when I wanted to go somewhere, it is sometimes fasterby walking. This is real. Therefore, a big city air is also dirty. Two years ago, I am surprised. When I caught a cold, I was blowing my nose. Then I saw my snivel color was black. Atthat time I thought big city is air very dirty. This is because big city has lot of traffic.I lived in a small city, and now I live in a big city. Around three years ago, I still want to livea big city. One day I thought about city. But during my time in a big city, I surprised aboutpeople, buildings and traffic. Finally, I decided to choose a small city. A small city has fewerpeople, fewer buildings and less traffic. Therefore, I think a small city is better for me.
