Advanced English 1Name1:00 pm IDAssignment DateGreeting Manners of Various CulturesWhen you take a business trip to a different country, you should take into consideration that every culture has a different way in greeting. In most Asian countries, people normally shake hands or bow to each other at first. Although many Asian countries share the almost similar gesture of greeting, there is a little difference. For example, Thais do not shake hands but only bow slightly like a prayer, named as ‘Wai’. In addition to it, India, China, and others also have their own traditional salutation. However, in western countries, you might greet with a hug and kiss. Meanwhile, in Africa, certain tribes spit on your face to express gladness of meeting you and the aborigine of New Zealand, called ‘Maori’, is rubbing a nose, named ‘Hungi’. To sum up, each culture has distinctive custom. Therefore, if you acknowledge different greeting manners of various cultures, you may obtain a fortune during your business trip to a different country.
Advanced English 1Name1:00 pm IDAssignment Date(Essay)A Book, Who Moved My Cheese?, touched my heartLiving in a high technology era, people face a lot of challenges in his or her life. Most people are in fear of a change because we usually think that it is beyond our control. Actually, a change happens either to the individual or by the individual. This book, Who Moved My Cheese?, has guided the way to accept and cope with changes in our everyday life and work. Although the topic seems very academes, the book is very legible. Moreover, the story is useful when we challenge with a change and tells why we should scurry into a change. Lastly, the book has taught me how to learn wisdom from failure.First of all, the book is very legible. At first, it seems like a parable to children. The author, Dr. Spencer Johnson, cast two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two littlepeople, Hem and Haw, who are mouse-size humans. Their names indicate their character so that we can easily remember them. Likewise, they are named by their nature. For example, the mice scurry into a change with sniffing and the two little people really hem and haw as the meanings of words are. They explain why we have to be alert to changes and prepare to go running off what we have possessed by searching for new sources. The story line is like a nursery tale with many illustrations. However, it’s for grown-ups.Secondly, the story and bywords in the book are very beneficial to people who confront a change. The main idea of the book could be summarized as people can become extinct unless people don’t change. The book provides a useful and practical guideline to deal with change. Hem and Haw, in the story, settle down to their usual routine with a big cheese and safety what they have. A little later, they become aware of running out of the cheese. At the moment, Haw begins to recognize their real state, not enough cheese to afford for the first time. Then, he starts to look for new cheese; money, dream, power, and so on. Reversely, Hem doesn’t accept the change. During I read this book, it forced me to ask myself who I am in those four characters. I have wondered that I am Haw. For many reasons, the book is helpful some people who may fear or resist change.Lastly, the book taught me how to learn wisdom from failure. The author said “Things change. They always have changed and always will change. While there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same”. In the story, Haw attempts to seek another cheese without any definite plan when he realizes that his circumstance is changing. His attempt might seem thoughtless and result in a failure. Nevertheless, he tries everyday. In other words, Hem could expect another cheese, waiting for him, but Hew might experience hunger, waiting for him. This book tells us that we can't succeed if we are afraid of failure and we must eject from our minds any fears that we will not succeed. The reason we don't move to change is because the fear of failure sets in our mind.In short, the book, Who Moved My Cheese?, is for business men; however, the author, Dr. Johnson, has applied it to any place such as church groups, schools, military organizations and so forth. As mentioned above, the book is very easy to read so that you can finish it in an hour. Besides, it has emphasized how to conquer changes and failures, which have been taking place frequently and rapidly throughout our lives. It is very helpful for most of people who fear and resist changes.
