Assignment IIIISubject: Video Reflection Paper- Class: BUS 100- Major: Business Ad.- Name:- Date: DATE @ "MMM. d, yy" Nov. 29, 10Human beings were made to seek happiness. In order to bring this “happiness,” human desire has to be fulfilled. There are three general desires that are commonly wanted in this world and they are desire of appetite, sex, and possession. Amongst the three, the desire of possession can act as a threat to our society in 21st century. It is what causes us to be unsatisfied with what we are given. It drives us to want more than what we can afford to have and unfortunately human beings tend to have absolutely no control over their actions when seeking for happiness, even when we all know that there exists no such thing as “100 percent satisfaction.” Affluenza can be defined as a virus that stimulates our wants and furthermore making us to achieve something that cannot be done, whether we know about it or not.The most obvious symptom for this virus is the shopping boom. Our daily life is surrounded by loads of materials. These materials can be anything from a table and a chair to personal vehicles or even accessory jewelries. Take a look at the local Seven – Eleven store for example. More than a thousand different items are displayed on the shelves. How about the department stores in a developed city? Millions of items are tidily displayed under the perfect lighting system with the most appropriate temperature that will make the customer want to purchase. What is our response to such a well planned game? We are busy looking at all the different products and come up with the most ridiculous reason trying to justify their dishonorable purchase. What happens then, to all the purchases after a month or two? Everyone knows that more than half of things that they buy will end up in the garage after you get tired of them, making your “home” into a pigpen. The saddest part of this is that we all know what will happen, but cannot stop manipulating themselves that shopping goods is ultimately the most desirable happiness. In 1957, a daily magazine once stated that “The most important role for advertisement in society is to urge individuals to become a part of America’s fast growing economy.” This states that advertisements are literally manipulate, or convince as the marketers like to put it, us individuals to go consume more and more. The only problem is that it has crossed the line and now marketers don’t feel any guilt when showing advertisements than have been given a little touch by our latest technology to make their life easier to convince the people, on America’s favorite channels. It is unfortunate that there still exists no affirmative remedy that is known to cure the virus in a short period of time. There are ways however, that one can do to help themselves get into the right track, the process of curing this syndrome that we have created. The first thing to do is to look back thoroughly into your life, the path that has brought you to where you stand. Look around your room and out of all the products that are there, identify the things that might have been purchased by the influence of Affluenza. Think about what kind of environmental destruction might have us human beings caused and the amount of our world’s natural resources spent, to bring all the products to your room for your personal satisfaction.Small group work can also be a good way to start curing. It is very ironical that as the global economy develops along with transportation and communications’ technology, inter-relationship between human beings has been severely interrupted. This phenomenon results the isolation of human beings. This is exactly what causes each and every one of us to run to the store and purchase whatever they can, in effort to please their broken hearts. The act of periodical gathering can be a great procedure to get involved with other people and by relying on each other; we will no longer need factory-made products to please themselves.
AssignmentISubject:- Class: BUS 100- Major: Business Ad.- Name:- Date: DATE @ "MMM. d, yy" Nov. 29, 10Analyzing the data shown on my CSM Profile was not much of a work. The graph fluctuated from the very top to the very bottom, meaning that I had very distinctive value points. Getting ahead and getting high were the two extreme characteristics about me. Both of them reached the very peak of the graph which meant that I value these to be more important than the other elements; such as getting secure, free and balanced, which were the ones that stayed in the very bottom of the list. There were two thoughts that went through my mind when I saw the results. The positive thought was that this test was rather accurate when it pointed out my intense characteristics. As quoted from the description of orientations, “this upwardly mobile career orientation is usually associated with advancing up a hierarchy of positions or a status system. Prestige and financial remuneration are usually bestowedld have not happened with out money. The second thought that popped in my mind was that maybe this test is not “always” accurate. Just by taking an example of my “getting balanced” value, it is obvious that there is something wrong with the result. According to this test, I am a person that had no consideration about my family or the people around me and that I was obsessed with work. There were however, some very interesting points. The paragraph above clearly tells you that I think financial success is very important for the happiness of enjoying life, for my family and me. That is very controversial to the point that all of my work is in the end for my family.Career Mission StatementEver since the time I met the president of Sam Sung electronics Co, I knew that I will someday be in a position where I could lead a company in strive of profit. I have been thought that the fundamental purpose of business is making profit. There must be numerous departments in such a big company like Sam force and the ability to pick intellectuals that will help him make more profit, the business cannot succeed in the long run.I am pursuing to be someone who can make the right decision for a big firm, a decision that might even change the entire company’s destiny. Working in this department will also allow me to meet various people and sometimes knowing all kinds of people can be a silent strength. I would like to become someone whose decision can make an enormous difference to a big firm and the people who are devoted to it. I would like to work in a big company that appreciates my ability to make such decisions with preciseness because I am going to do anything at any cost, here in my last two year of university, to be able to think like they do in the real world.Making a list of capabilities that are mandatory to make my dream become a reality would be impossible for it would go on forever. These are however, some points that I believe is important when one seeks to be in such a pothe one who talks in the center of a discussion, but good listeners enjoy the time to learn and think about what the other person has to say, needless to mention the point that they will always be liked and looked for, by the people around them. Another thing that will help you in many ways is adapting the habit of giving compliments. Like someone said, sincere compliments will even make a whale dance. Giving compliment is actually something that one can do at the cost of nothing but the benefits in return are indefinite. Every single person on this planet likes to hear compliments and if the speaker is sincere and enjoys complimenting other people’s merits, that person will be the one who gains the most in the long run.Career Performance ObjectivesThere is not much to say about career performance objective because I believe that the society is equal and that everyone gets whatever it is that they deserve. As for me, I would like to receive what I am worth but if I was to give a specifecognition could be justified as my greed but I believe that if someone deserves the respect and be recognized, they should be treated so. The important thing is that they always remember to be modest. That way, they will gain more respect and not hatred or jealousy.Level of Responsibility in my opinion is something that I do not have a choice upon. I believe that responsibility is something that just follows you through your journey to the peak and it will just get heavier as you reach the top, which is completely natural phenomenon. It is something that you should not try to avoid. If you are sincere about what you want to be, I think it is important that one accepts the responsibility and be gratified that he/she is responsible for a lot of people’s lives and that many things depend on them. Authority or power always comes together with responsibility. In order to be someone who is respected by his work staff and his wife, one has to know what is more valuable and what comes first. Wly.
IntroductionBeowulf is one of the finest epic poems written back in Anglo-Saxon times and it is the longest, well preserved piece of literature. It is mainly about a heroic character Beowulf`s life. The poem can be divided into four sections, the three battles and the funeral of Beowulf. The three main battles show how Beowulf as a fighter is invincibly strong and fierce but it also tells the readers that a fight never ends. Everytime Beowulf brings victory, they feast in joy but another battle always waits them. This was probably the intention of the author; that a fight never ends perpetually.
Natsuko OhsumiBUS 100Video Reflection Paper#2May 8, 2006The symptoms of “Affluenza” can be easily spotted in our daily lives. People now a days love to buy anything whether they can afford it or not. The greed they have is indescribable. From cars to clothes, everyone seems to like newer things. People want to buy a new car when they have a perfectly well-running car waiting for them in their “private” garage. This might make sense for the upper class bourgeois. However, the reality is that people around us, who are just normal “middle-class” citizens, also have the same problem.Teenage girls now days for example, usually have lots of clothes in their closet. Then have you seen any teenage girls who are fully happy and satisfied with what they already have? The answer should be no because it even includes myself. It is the same for almost everyone who is living in this century. They feel satisfaction only when they are actually buying something more valuable and the latest series. They tend to believe that having the ability to purchase the goods is some kind of a sign or an evidence of happiness in life. To buy goods however, people have to work for long hours and make gigantic profits. That causes isolation of that working person from the rest of the family members. The purpose of the business is to keep earning money. To do that, marketers do a lot of advertisements. Using the TV commercial or direct mails they show us that we will be happy when we but that or eat that. As we have learned in the chapter fifteen, to send a consistent message to target customer over and over. People are exposed thousand of advertisements everyday. Those accelerate Affluenza. And advertisements in TV and the consume culture of America are the model of wealth in almost all developing countries. If many countries would change like America, people would repeat buying new products and throw away that. It means spreading not only Affluenza, but also environmental problem.Maslow said that human beings would be interested in self-fulfillment after he is satisfied with the lower level needs. Of course many people seek to their self-fulfillment today. On the other hand, however, some people forget something and they have been trying to find the satisfaction in the lower level for a long time.Affluenza may be good for the company. If people cannot stop buying products, the company will make lots of profits. However, they have to think that “what is good for the society.” It is time that companies start looking at life in an ethical way. The company has the power to change the society.
Assignment IISubject: WSJ Summary- Class: BUS 100- Major: Business Ad.- Name:- Date: DATE @ "MMM. d, yy" Nov. 29, 10A need to “Change” or “Die”The great reputation of two mother companies in Automobiles has suffered tremendously for the past five to six years. HYPERLINK "http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=gm" General Motors Corp. and HYPERLINK "http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=f" Ford Motor Co. has been facing a serious lose in their financial market and their company value image to the customers. The old “dominant automobile company” or “Economic mighty” title has long been faded away. The main key to this phenomenon has to do with the unchangeable legacy price of automobile companies in America. Great number of automobile companies, especially from Asia, has taken away the customers by offering some unbelievable prices and their A/S policies. When this first happened, American companies were not so concerned for they believed that the quality this year, the industry is riveted by a far more urgent matter: the problems afflicting the Motor City's beaten-up giants, HYPERLINK "http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=gm" General Motors Corp. and HYPERLINK "http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=f" Ford Motor Co. -- and whether they can ride them out.In many ways, the industry's current woes are aggravated by legacies that go back to their days as icons of America's industrial power -- hobbling everything from their sales efforts to their corporate cultures.Early last century, Ford mastered assembly-line production with its Model T and paid $5-a-day wages that put autos in reach of the masses. GM, under legendary early leader Alfred P. Sloan, refined modern management methods and made the car a status symbol. It rolled out a wide range of brands -- and features from tailfins to wraparound windshields -- designed to suit every purse and purpose.Post-World War II deals between the auto makers and th. But both also say they understand the new world, and promise big restructuring plans this year. U.S. car makers must "change or die," declared Mark Fields, newly appointed president of Ford's Americas operations, last week.Still, tackling their "legacy costs" is proving to be a highly complicated challenge, as a look at some of GM's problems illustrates. Most industry executives use "legacy costs" as shorthand for health and pension obligations owed to retirees -- usually cited as the industry's No. 1 problem. But GM's real legacy costs constitute a vicious circle that go well beyond those issues, affecting decisions about employees and production capacity, marketing and corporate culture. Progress in one area often hampers it elsewhere.Take GM's longstanding agreement with the UAW to pay laid-off hourly workers nearly full wages long after their jobs are eliminated. Dubbed the "Jobs Bank," this has stirred concern for investors asking how GM can cut costs and sell its vehicles at morounds of contract bargaining, including the most recent round in 2003.In the consumer arena, GM is saddled with another legacy: The years, mainly in the 1980s and 1990s, when its vehicles suffered from inferior quality and reliability compared with the best Japanese brands. Many consumers thought GM also lagged in its designs. As GM Vice Chairman for Product Development Robert Lutz said earlier this year, "We had interiors that can only be described as 'functional.' They had very little about them that was aesthetically pleasing."Mr. Lutz has spent much of the past four years pushing GM's designers and engineers to create better-looking cars that will erase memories of GM's drab 1980s and 1990s vehicles. But that's easier said than done.Last April, when GM hosted a competitive-drive event at a race track outside Chicago, customers formed long lines to try out the new Volkswagen Jetta and BMW 3-series. But there was no wait to drive many of GM's touted vehicles, such as the Chevrolet Mae brand in 2000. But the phase-out was messy, taking several years and costing about $1 billion in expenses related to buying out Oldsmobile dealers, who had claims to compensation under state-franchise laws and GM's dealer agreements.Mr. LaNeve says he's not planning to kill any more brands. Instead, he's trying to get Buick, Pontiac and GMC dealers to consolidate so they can sell a slimmed-down portfolio of vehicles under those three brands. As of now, he says, stores in which those three brands account for 60% of volume have been merged. "If we really do it right, we get better financial results," he said. But when? Mr. Wagoner won't say, although he has hinted that he expects 2006 to be better than 2005. With most industry executives forecasting flat overall U.S. sales in 2006, and competitors such as Toyota lining up big new model blitzes of their own, though, it's not likely GM will get much relief from pricing pressure.Coming in 2007, GM faces perhaps the toughest legacy test: ne
