June 21, 2003American CultureKim, HimyungFitzgerald and the American CultureFitzgerald and his novel, The Great Gatsby, is the symbol of the jazz age where everything was possible after WWI. WWI had a tremendous impact on American culture, which can be seen through Fitzgerald’s novels.Different from Hemingway, Fitzgerald never got a reputation while he was alive. The answer to why Fitzgerald wasn’t accepted to the people when he lived is because people’s conception of culture and value differs from time to time. Also, people rediscover the unaccepted works of an artist.Fitzgerald’s greatest novel, the Great Gatsby, shows the beauty of the words. While Hemingway uses ordinary words, Fitzgerald used words, which can seduce people. Fitzgerald uses colors and many other symbols in his novel as a metaphor.Fitzgerald was always obsessed by living through the rich generation, but never being rich himself. In the Great Gatsby, he shows the relationship between ethics and literature, which is the resistance to the temptations of a deeply materialistic culture.Gatsby was always looking out and never in. Fitzgerald tries to show a model of the greed cycle through a man named Gatsby in his novel. Also, through Gatsby, Fitzgerald reflects the American dream. Gatsby was a man who dreamed and achieved his dream, but eventually collapsed because of his greed. Fitzgerald shows a moral instruction, which is resisting against the greed in his novel. Through his universal character, Gatsby, his novel shows a figure that rings true today.

  • [미국의 문화] American Culture 평가A좋아요
June 21, 2003American CultureKim, HimyungSelf-Reliance in the American CultureAmerican dream is based on the idea that each person, no matter who he is, can become successful in life by hard work and self-reliance. In other words, American dream promises prosperity and self-fulfillment as a reward for hard working. The American dream, as a product of the frontier to the west, challenges people to have dreams and to become self-reliant.One of the greatest goals in the American culture is to grow up being self-reliant. This is very different from the Confucianism culture, where in the Confucianism culture, the idea of being a member of a group and functioning inside of the group is emphasized more than being self-reliant. The American culture uses self-reliance, not how you work in a group, as a way to measure one’s success.Americans gives high value to a self-made man who has achieved financial success, and Americans believe that success can be achieved through self-reliance. Therefore, teaching and showing how to become self-reliant is emphasized in the American education. In the American education people are taught to become independent from other people.Parents teach their children to become independent from the parents, instead of spoon-feeding their children. Children are taught to make money for themselves rather than just getting money from their parents. Also, as soon as people in America become 18, they move out from their parents’ home. These are examples of how self-reliance is taught in American culture. In the American culture, it is the individual’s effort, which leads to a successful life. Those who are self-reliant can make this effort. Thus, Americans think the idea of self-reliance is the driving force for success in one’s life.

  • American Foreign Policy
June 21, 2003American CultureKim, HimyungUS Foreign Policy (Comment for Tom Friedman)The U.S. is the hegemony of the world since WWII, in terms of politics, economy, and ideology. Its policy towards foreign countries is affecting people’s lives individually and socially. Therefore, to some extent America is annoying people all over the world. The recent war against Iraq shows how American ideology can affect people’s lives outside of America. One of the rationales that America has given to the war against Iraq was to make Iraq as an example of democracy in the mid-east Asia. The idea of democracy is what makes an American an American. To Americans democracy is not just rules, but aspirations for the life of an American. However, just because Americans highly value democracy doesn’t mean that America can impose the idea to other nations.US foreign policy seems like Americans can only benefit out of the U.S. foreign policy, and other nations are just forced to follow the U.S. foreign policy. The U.S. is the dominant power of the world, and the power is affecting even to those who live outside the U.S. Not only foreign governments but also the people are forced to accept the political ideas highly valued by Americans, even though American ideas are annoying. Therefore, Americans should be aware of imposing their values of ideology and policy towards the world, since the imposed policy effects people’s lives.

  • [영작] American Movie Critique
June 21, 2003American CultureKim, HimyungNorman Rockwell and the Aspects of American CultureA short video of Norman Rockwell starts with showing different pictures and paintings of faces, and the background music is also about ‘faces’. Rockwell, as an ordinary retired man in America, rides a bicycle with his wife everyday, even though he is 78 years old. He goes off the Main St. and sees his friends in town.As Rockwell narrates in his film that he was born in an unbelievably middle class. He remembers his father reading out loud to he and his brother every night. Rockwell also remembers he and his brother finding something fun to do, and ending up making their own entertainment, playing baseball. He also remembers his brother being extremely good at athletics. Probably growing up in a middle -class family, rather than a high-class family, made his paintings more representative of the American life. All the people Rockwell meets in town are his model for painting. What I think is that Rockwell, a painter, reflected the American culture through the faces in his paintings. As shown in the video, Rockwell’s paintings include a wide range of people, from people that we can meet on the street to politicians such as Kennedy and to famous singers such as the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Rockwell painted the boy scouts, the Hippies, the circus scenes, the war, and the triumph of war. Through his paintings he shows all different aspects of American life, from a man seen in the neighbor to celebrities. All of these different people, together, compose the American culture.People say that Rockwell is a historian, since he painted many historical events throughout the 20th century. However, Rockwell says he just painted things that were around him. The short film ends with the same music about ‘faces’, and what Rockwell wanted to picture in the film was not about the famous people of American history, but about the various and different people living in America as an American. All different faces shown in Rockwell’s paintings are the aspects of American life and culture.

  • [crisis management] Iraq Crisis
June 21,2003Crisis ManagementKim, HimyungIraq and North Korea Crisis: Comparing Diplomatic OptionsIt has been almost a year since the issue of Iraq has started, and the war in Iraq had broken out. Since there have been many different opinions and debates on the Iraq crisis. An analysis of the elements of this crisis is essential to help understanding it. America was at war essentially by itself, even though it did not intend to do so. Analyzing what lead to this kind of a situation is the basis on understanding the crisis elements in Iraq’s crisis.Crises have characteristics in common, one of which is ambiguity. Ambiguity makes it hard to see through a crisis, making prediction difficult doubly so because each stage in a crisis affects the next stage. In the case of Iraq crisis, we witnessed miscalculation on diplomacy that made it more difficult to predict how the next stage in Iraq crisis would play out.As demonstrated in this crisis, misperception led to miscalculation. The mispercet in the same way, and the resolution was opened to different interpretations of what “serious consequences” meant. Depending on interpretation, the issue of the inspection being conducted fairly was viewed differently among the nations. Bush administration claimed that the dangers in Iraq were so great that military action was necessary. However, European countries, such as France, opposed the U.S. arguing if there is a danger, produce the evidence. Also, the misperception came from the intelligence failure in understanding other countries’ interests. 9.11 led to many miscalculations including miscalculation in diplomacy. In Iraq, the miscalculation in terms of diplomacy was the failure of the US to get Security Council legitimacy for military action. The US misread the intensity of the opposition, namely France and Russia. In other words, the failure to anticipate that many nations faith the inspections meant a failure in diplomacy.Another factor that led to a diplomatic failure was tally got to the ground to gear up. From December to April, when the desert starts to heat up, was not enough time for inspection to be completed. While the military was intended to force diplomacy, ironically it triggered military action. The weather driven time table in Iraq was one of the factors that resulted in a diplomatic failure. As an example of one crisis influencing another, Iraq is now influencing the crisis in Korea. Therefore, analysis of diplomacy during the Iraq crisis gives US a guideline on the crisis in Korea. In Iraq, there was a diplomatic miscalculation and failure, but diplomacy in North Korean crisis may be more successful during the pre conflict stage. The US government favors a multilateral approach toward the crisis in Korea. The situation, including the geo-strategic situation of Korean Peninsula, makes the US take the diplomatic option more seriously. Also, Russia, China, Japan, and the two Koreas might have drawn some lessons from Iraq crisis to adjust to therisis appeared, escalated and entered a post-crisis phase. However, there are psychological, ideological, cultural obstacles in solving the North Korea crisis diplomatically. First of all, psychologically both the US and North Korea don’t trust each other, as seen in the saying ‘They (North Korea) trusts the us (the U.S.) less than we trust them.’ Also ideologically America identifies them as a democracy, but the North Koreans don’t. We see North Korea and the US having a hard time negotiating with each other because of those obstacles. In the case of North Korea, both North Korea and the US see the deal, but it seems like they can’t get close to it because of the difference about who will make the first confess on negotiating. Both sides agree on the goal but don’t agree to the steps, because there is a fundamental difference in perception. One example is that North Korea sees their nuclear weapon for defensive purposes where the US sees it as for an offensive purpose. As seen in Iraq cs how the distrust can escalate the crisis. Also distrust in Saddam’s regime led to a diplomatic failure. North Korea wants the US to change its attitude, because North Korea sees the attitude as a threat. Also, the US considers North Korea as the bad boy, and is saying that they can’t trust North Korea. There is no trust between the two, similar to the Cuban missile, and Iraq crises. If the tension grows because of the distrust, the chances of failing in diplomacy will also grow. The situation in North Korea is much more complicated compared with Iraq. Therefore, the diplomatic option should be considered more seriously by both North Korea and the US. Resolving the crisis in North Korea in a diplomatic mode depends on how much each side is willing to accept each other’s terms. To do so, there should be a consideration on negotiating across the cultural devise, and efforts to built trust in each other. Also interests of the countries surrounding North Korea shouldn’t be ignored. In Iraqons.
