IntroductionThe world is becoming smaller in the sense that information can be shared with other countries through the Internet and media through the developed technology. Foreign language education has spread in more and more primary schools year by year since most people recognized that second language can became a tool of international communication. Discussion about the most effective time and the method to teach children a foreign language has been held in many countries. In particularly, the optimal age to start foreign language education has been debated in many countries.At first, this essay will discuss the difference of acquiring foreign language between children and adults and then mention the advantages through early foreign language education. Lastly, this essay will examine why children should be taught foreign language in primary school.The reason learning foreign language earlyBeringer (1976) mentioned that the essential factor to learn language is the number of repetit their communication when they are speaking. Viewed from Beringer's (1976) theory that repetition is the most important form of learning language, children have a more advantageous position in learning language than adults. Besides, children tend to correct their mistakes while they are talking and can learn the right contextual structure of language.Example:Child: and then .. he do it wrongTeacher: He did it wrong. Why did he do it wrong? How was it wrong?Child: He did it wrong. Because.. (Beringer , 1976)In this way, children tend to acquire vocabulary and structure of foreign language through repeated imitations without considering grammatical logic.Moreover, research surveyed by linguists regards pronunciation as the result of ability which is related to age in learning foreign language. Children make remarkable progress in the area of pronunciation. For example, according to Oyama's research (Oyama ,1978), both children and adults who use Japanese as a mother tongue were asked to tstanding ability of children within the part of pronunciation than adults. In general, children are able to pronounce second language like native speakers because they probably imitate what they have experienced through language. Furthermore, Krashen (1979) mentioned that children, over 12 years old, have a difficulty of acquiring pronunciation like native speakers. This reinforces the need of early language education.Less self-consciousness and less stressOyama (1978) stated that second language education in primary school was usually successful because children under 12 years old accept the second language at its face value. Although children make many errors of sentence while speaking or writing, they do not have stress in the process of repetition and rather enjoy these. As the fact given above, children can get motivation of learning second language and prepare basic capabilities for more development of language. On the other hand, adolescents and adults are unwilling to speak folts’ intention which achieve competence in communication, children do not devote a lot of time on grammar and vocabulary in order to attain high marks in the examination. It can be part of the reason children readily acquire languages is that they enjoy learning a foreign language. For example, children enjoy the way of expressing their language without shame such as singing a song, reciting or using gesture.Benefits through early foreign language educationBialystok (1986) said that early foreign language education is related to academic achievement. Students studying foreign language every day, under 12 years old, have more outstanding reading skill than those who do not. This also shows a close relation between early foreign language education and academic achievement. As a result, Bialystock suggests that early second language education helps enhance other academic skills.Moreover, learning a foreign language at early age helps prevent cultural hostility about other countries in you some advantages in case of children learning foreign languages.Children can pronounce foreign language more fluently and distinguish subtle pronunciations more exactly through early foreign language education than adults. Furthermore, children regard foreign language as mother tongue in such the case which children are early expose to foreign language and they speak foreign language like routine habits without grammatical consideration. To speak generally, earlier children are taught foreign languages, the easier it is for them to understand it. Also, foreign languages learned by children not only help comprehension of cultural diversity but also increase academic skills.
