IntroIn human life, there are three specific elements, and those are belief, hope, and love. If people could have had and felt those significant aspects of human life somewhere, they felt safe and comfortable, and the place, furthermore, might become their new hometown even if it were a completely strange place they have never known. The StrangerAt 9:30 P.M. on Saturday, 4 August 2007, a strange, foreign man landed at Norman Rogers Airport. It was very dark and silent, and approximately 10 passengers were being welcomed by their relatives and friends. The passengers were going out toward their destinations, and eventually, the stranger was alone in the airport. He had taken a flight for 15 hours from his country, and besides, he had been very nervous, afraid of the strange city and carrying two huge, inconvenient bags. Needless to say, he was very tired and could not even stand up anymore. In addition, unfortunately, he knew no one in the city, and moreover, did not know how to speak Enot wanted to interrupt the driver’s lunch, he asked the driver very carefully if he could drive him or not because he had heavy things and was tired. The event was just started when the driver drove him to his house. They talked to each other about the stranger’s life in Kingston. The problem was that the old driver forgot that the meter was on until the taxi arrived at the stranger’s house. The driver said continuously “I’m sorry about that. It’s my fault. Just pay what you want.” Finally, the stranger paid $10 without change, and both of them knew that it was too much from the grocery store to his house, because generally, the fare was just $ 5. The stranger thought of his grandfather who had passed away 8 years ago. His grandfather was the only grandparent who he had ever had. His grandfather always has advised him on everything in his life. The old driver said finally to him, when he was going into his house, “Always do your best, young man.” The stranger could not move at the mome the moment, the man realized there was someone who had remembered him in this strange city, and he was very impressed because before the event, he had been feeling lonely and homesick. Consequently, the event brought him “belief” that he might be a Kingston constituent, and moreover, not a stranger anymore in this strange city, Kingston.HopeThere was a convenience store which was the closest one to the stranger’s house. The stranger has used the store frequently since he moved to Kingston, but he had never known who the store’s owner was before this event. One day, the man who was working behind the counter asked the stranger if he had a time to talk. The man introduced himself and said he had been managing the store since the previous August. He was the store’s owner. The owner gave the stranger a complimentary drink, and they were beginning to talk to each other. An interesting thing was that they moved to Kingston at the same time, August 2007, and both of them had been engineers bstudy for masters at Queen’s?” After that, he gave the stranger a lot of information about graduate studies in Canada. Even though the stranger had been thinking about that, the talk was enough to give him bravery and confidence. The owner had been doing a lot of things for his family, goals, and his life even if he had to move to many cities. In fact, the stranger came to Canada to change his life and pursue his goals. However, while living in Kinston, he grew accustomed to his life and lost his way again just like he had in his country. The owner’s life became one of motivation, in which he would look for his own way again. The stranger could stand up and run toward his goal as well. In that way, he looked at his future in Kingston.LoveHave you ever thought about the definition of family? In the dictionary, a family is defined as a group of people who are related to each other, especially parents and their children. And it has to contain loving each other. Family, that is just made ode, encouraged, and helped each other to stand up toward their goals again. Needless to say, they have become a family and friends in spite of differences in age, gender, and nationality. In addition, inside that, there has love, which they showed by being worried each other. After every graduation, tears appeared in many students’ eyes, but those did not mean sadness. They meant of anxiety, because they could not take care of each other anymore, and wishes for every friend’s happiness and success. Definitely, there was love and care for each other, and the stranger could endure many problems and live in peace in Kingston with them.Outro“Hometown” is defined as the town where one lives or the town that they come from. Since he arrived, if people asked him where he was from, the stranger answered “I am from Kinston.” instead of his country. For one year, he has not been a Korean, and absolutely, not a Canadian. He was just a student who wanted to be master of English, and moreover, somet)
Have you ever suffered from a humiliating failure in love? In Great Expectations, which was written by Charles Dickens, there was a woman named Miss Havisham who failed in love, and moreover, was deserted on her wedding day. This woman displayed very well in Great Expectations how a female avenger, who had been hurt by her fiancé, could do anything for retaliation. Miss Havisham adopted a very young girl named Estella, and then, she brought the child up severely, the way what Miss Havisham had wanted, for several reasons. The relationship between Miss Havisham and Estella can be interpreted through its effects on Estella’s life. The first reason for adopting and raising Estella was for Miss Havisham’s vengeful thoughts toward males. In other words, Estella was Miss Havisham’s retaliatory tool. On the unsuccessful wedding day of Miss Havisham, she received a parting letter from her groom, and moreover, the groom stole much of her property as well. Consequently, Miss Havisham was determined to make all the male sex suffer because of her betrayal of love, and then, she adopted Estella (49-50). While Miss Havisham was raising Estella, she instructed Estella in how to make males fall in love with her and hurt them, and eventually, the result of Miss Havisham’s revenge affected the relationship between Pip and Estella. Although Estella had learned to have a cold heart from Miss Havisham, when Pip asked Estella if she would marry Bentley Drummle, Estella hesitated to answer the question and tried to read Miss Havisham’s face. It seemed Estella had had a bit her love for Pip. However, unfortunately, Estella had to give this up because of Miss Havisham, and as a result, Pip was hurt by Estella, as Miss Havisham had planned (87).Secondly, Miss Havisham clung to Estella. The reason can be interpreted as Miss Havisham’s wanting to be satisfied through Estella’s life. Miss Havisham had an incomplete life since she was a child. Her mother died when she was a baby, her father gave her everything she wanted, and moreover, she never experienced how to get over a difficulty. Thus, after her “wedding” day, Miss Havisham just stopped all clocks in her house, did not touch anything, and even was still dressed for her marriage (49-50). Consequently, Miss Havisham wanted to be compensated for this unsatisfied and incomplete life through Estella’s life. At first acquaintance, Miss Havisham asked Pip how he had felt about Estella’s contempt, and then Miss Havisham felt satisfaction (21-22). In addition, when Miss Havisham and Estella had an argument, Miss Havisham clung to control Estella’s life and love because Estella had been the only satisfaction in the old woman’s life (73-74).Lastly, Estella and Miss Havisham’s life can be compared with Pip and Magwitch’s life. In the concrete, Charles Dickens, the author of the Great Expectations, created several relationships to help events unfold, and among the characters’ relationships, the most significant were between Estella and Miss Havisham, and Pip and Magwitch. Dickens attempted to show social irregularities through their strange relationships. Estella brought up as Miss Havisham’s property, and Miss Havisham wanted to be compensated for her sad life through Estella’s life. Magwitch also wanted to show that Pip could be a gentleman with his illegal property, and be compensated for his hardships through Pip’s life, sacrificing a great deal for Pip (100-101). Eventually, Estella had an unsuccessful marriage, and went back to a ruined life, the same as Miss Havisham (107). Pip also became bankrupt because of Magwitch’s illegal property (102). Thus, both relationships had similar purposes and outcomes.Great Expectations portrayed very well how social status and wealth could be nothing and were never more important than friendship and love. Even though Miss Havisham had standing and money, she could not have a successful and happy life. In addition, Estella had a high status and wealth from Miss Havisham when she was a young girl, but Estella walked the same way as Miss Havisham did, because Estella ignored the opportunity to accept Pip’s love. Finally, through the life of Miss Havisham and Estella, the most important instruction of Great Expectations is that real happiness and success should be based on friendship and love.A Woman’s Revenge

At 7:58 A.M. local time on Sunday, 26 December 2004, people who had been living and traveling peacefully in Sumatra, Indonesia, could not perceive what would happen to them, at least until an enormous tsunami struck. At the same time, an extremely strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 9.3, occurred in the Indian Ocean approximately 250km off the west coast of Sumatra. This earthquake was the world’s second largest in magnitude in the last two centuries. The earthquake kept up for 500 seconds and consequently generated one of the most devastating tsunamis in recorded history. Within 15-20 minutes after the earthquake, the tsunami arrived in northern Sumatra first, and soon, the west coast of Sumatra turned into pandemonium (Iwan, xi, s106). As a result, the west coast of Sumatra was devastated by the Indian Ocean tsunami with serious social, economic and environmental impacts. One of the biggest effects of the tsunami in Sumatra was the social impact. The tsunami from the Indian Ocean took thousands of people’s lives and destroyed housing and infrastructure. In Aceh, the northern province of Sumatra, 131,000 people were confirmed dead, and 37,000 were missing. With over 80,000 houses sustaining major damage or collapse, it was estimated that 518,500 people were displaced from their homes. Furthermore, 693 hospitals or clinics, 1,662 schools, 2,580 mosques, 1,412 government buildings, 1,416 market and kiosk units, and 2,617 km of road were destroyed or damaged (“2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake”). In addition to the immense damage to housing and infrastructure, this disaster impacted the social fabric and government administration of the affected communities. Consequently, the region’s society and government were paralyzed by the strike of the tsunami, and moreover, it made outside help difficult because most transport, energy and communications networks were destroyed.Another serious effect of the tsunami in Sumatra was the economic impact. The total damage and losses to lifelines and infrastructure in Indonesia were valued at approximately US$800 million and were dominated by the damage to transportation in 61% of the total impact, irrigation and flood control in 25%, energy in 8%, water and sanitation in 3% and communications in 2%. In addition, 33,846 houses required renovating, and 63,356 houses needed reconstructing (Iwan, s514, s779). Consequently, the total cost of rebuilding was estimated at US$4.5 billion (“Overview: Aceh after the Tsunami”). Despite the visible economic impact, the more serious problem was that many people lost their work. Before the tsunami flooded the area, most people who lived near the coast of Sumatra had worked in the tourism and fishing industries. However, the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated the coast which had supported their livelihood, and consequently, it caused a decrease in tourism and destruction of the fishery (“2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake”).The final effect of the tsunami in Sumatra was the environmental impact. The tsunami caused enormous damage that will affect the region for many years to come. The severe damage exerted a serious influence on the ecosystem, including mangroves, coral reefs, forests and coastal wetlands. In addition, the tsunami created millions of cubic metres of waste and debris and devastated critical environmental infrastructure. The cost of this damage is estimated to be more than US$600 million, and the environmental impact will last for a long time (“2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake”).In conclusion, the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated cities, towns and villages along hundreds of kilometers of the coast of Sumatra with serious social, economic and environmental impacts. Rebuilding society and environment is significant and imperative, obviously, and on the other hand, through the Indian Ocean tsunami, important lessons can be learned about overlooked strategies for hazard mitigation. In the concrete, the tsunami has generated much attention to such preparedness measures as early warning systems, the design of tsunami-resistant structures, and evacuation planning. Thus, all parts of society should be aware of the enormous power of nature, and moreover, they must prepare for natural disasters. The Tsunami in SumatraJune 13, 2008References“2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake.” 2 June, 2008. www.wikipedia.org. 4 June, 2008 .Iwan, Wilfred D. Recently, many Korean students have been coming to Canada every year. Some of the Korean students who come to Canada used to experience problems because there are district differences between Korean and Canadian universities.First of all, there are some differences about system of entrance Canadian students are generally admitted to university based on their high school grades.
