Ethnocentrism문화충격은 상대적인 가치와 인간의 차이점을 이해하는 것에 대한 훌륭한 수업이 될 수 있다. 문화충격이 일어나는 이유는 우리가 타 집단의 문화와의 차이점을 받아들이려는 대비가 되지 않았기 때문이다. 우리 문화 속에서 우리의 방법으로 가르칠 때 우리 모두는 자민족중심주의자가 되어간다.Ethnocentric(민족 중심적인)은 사람 또는 집단을 의미하는 고대 그리스어 ethnos에서 기원하는데, 이는 우리의 견해 또는 세계관이 우리 자신의 삶을 중심으로 한 것이라는 사실을 말한다. 자민족중심주의는 자신의 행동의 패턴이 최고라는 믿음으로써 가장 자연스럽고 아름답고 올바르고 중요하다는 것이다. 그래서 생활방식이 다른 범위의 사람들은 비인간적이거나 비도덕적이거나 부자연스럽거나 잘못된 표준에 의해 살고 있는 것이 된다. 타인과 자신을 비교함에 있어서 자민족중심주의는 자신의 문화가 다른 어떤 것보다 좋은 것이라는 관점으로 모든 사람이 느끼는 방식이다. 아무리 자신이 자유롭고 열린 마음을 지녔다고 여기더라도 사람은 어느 정도 자민족중심주의적일 수밖에 없다. 자민족중심주의는 신화, 민간설화, 속담 등의 형태로 나타날 수 있다.어휘로 나타나는 자민족중심주의의 예로 우리나라 사람들이 타국인들을 낮추어 부르는 것에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 첫째로 일본인을 얕잡아 부르는 쪽발이를 들 수 있다. 쪽발이의 의미는 한 발만 달린 물건, 발통이 두 조각으로 된 물건을 의미하는 것인데, 처음에는 엄지발가락과 나머지 발가락들을 가르는 게다를 지칭하는 단어로 쓰이다가 게다를 신는 일본인들을 의미하는 말로 변모하였다. 또한 오랑캐라는 말도 있다. 오랑캐는 처음에 두만강 이북에 살던 여진족 중 올량합을 가르키던 말이었는데, 이것이 점차 확대되어 야만스러운 종족, 침략자를 의미하는 말로 정착되었다. 오랑캐라는 말은 올량합의 시조가 개와 사람 사이에서 태어났다는 설화에서 생겨났다. 이야기는 이러하다. 과거 한 재상이 얇은 껍질로 북을 만들고 그 북을 찢지 않고 칠 수 있는 사람에게 자신의 딸을 주겠다고 했으나 성공하는 사람이 없었다. 그러던 중 북소리가 나서 나가 보니 개가 꼬리로 북을 치고 있었고 재상은 약속대로 딸을 개에게 주었다. 그런데 개가 밤바다 딸을 할퀴고 물어 이를 참지 못한 딸은 개의 네 발과 입에 주머니를 씌우고 살다가 후손을 퍼뜨렸다고 전해진다. 여기서 개에게 씌운 주머니 즉, 오낭을 낀 개가 변해서 만들어진 것이 오랑캐인 것이다.
