The Aging SocietyAmy KimAccording to the population statistics in South Korea, the number of people who are over 65 years old has been increased 2.5% since the 1960s; besides that, people occupy 5% of the total population. As a result, Korea’s population is changing forward to an aging society. Nowadays, the issue about seniors is a ‘hot potato’. We can approach the article or news about seniors all day through the mass-media. In this essay, what I want to talk about are the causes and effects and solutions concerning the old people. There are some factors which cause an aging society: a technological development, and the decline in the birth rate. Once state-of-the-art technology has developed, medical technology has started to develop rapidly as well. Accordingly, recent medical technology can cure and recover any kinds of diseases; consequently, the life of human beings is gradually expanding. The average life expectancy was 45 years old 50 years ago, yet now it is a 63 years old! On account of technological development, the aging society is an issue. While the population of seniors is increasing, the birth rate is decreasing. Now that the average birth rate is 1.5 per family, it is not surprising that an aging society could be dominant. The birth rate has been declining; likewise, an aging society would soon become a concern because the pace of the increasing number of seniors will be much higher, compared to the number of children in the future. An aging society could create jobs for the welfare of the aged. Now, in Korea, benefits for the aged are promising such as the study of the welfare of the aged, a town for the aged, the industry aimed for the aged, etc. In the foreseen future, many buildings, facilities, towns are going to be built for the aged. While the candidates who want to get a new job are more than the demands now, the problem about jobs would be solved on account of the industry aimed for the aged. Koreans call the industry for the aged the ‘Silver industry’ because people’s hair turn gray (kind of silver) when they get old. The ‘Silver industry’ includes diverse fields; for example, there could be masseurs and masseuses, nutritionists, health-trainers only for the seniors. Since the aged are more sensitive and vulnerable than the others, they need experts in no matter what they do.Nevertheless, and aging society has negative effects. First of all, this is about the national finance. The more the aged population increases, the bigger the old age pension will be. Hence, the nation should impose taxes on the people. Because the nation is responsible for helping the aged, it should adjust the finances for the people. As well as Korea, most countries have old age pensions. This means the effects are not limited to one country anymore. Thus, we should settle the solutions about the negative effects soon. Second, it is about the values. These days, wherever we go, we meet seniors such as in buses, restaurants, play-grounds, etc. However, our values have changed from traditional values, which show a respect for seniors. As a result, the aged tend to be lonely and solitary. The erosion of traditional values makes seniors lonely and solitary. As we know, campaigns for the aged and the youth can solve the problems. First, for aged people, the mass-media should urge them to improve themselves again and again. Now, because the youth are more capable and smarter than the aged, they are laid off from office. By campaign as to self-evolving, the aged should develop themselves and try to keep their places. If they do, the nation doesn’t have to worry about the pension problem. Not only could they enjoy their life, but they also would be more confident. Next, we put the new values on a firm footing to respect the aged for the youth. If the youth don’t respect seniors, the society would not be stable; also, seniors would still be solitary. All in all, an aging society will be caused by medical technological development and the decline in the birth rate. By these causes, we can have several effects: the pension problem, and the creation of new jobs. There effects could be solved by putting the right values on a firm footing, and offering jobs for the aged. An aging society is the phenomenon which we can’t solve clearly. However, if we make an effort to reduce the pace of this phenomenon, we could deal with it, minimizing the negative effects. Seniors should be well-respected just because of the experience of their life. If we respect each other regardless of which aged, we could find a solution for an aging society.
