09/13/09Level 6Kashmir Affairs with India(A response to Lydia Polgreen’s New York Times article)In Lydia Polgreen’s New York Times article, “2 Killings Stoke Kashmiri Rage at Indian Force,” she talks about the killing of two Kashmiri girls, decreasing the Kashmir militants, increasing Indian forces, and Kashmiri rage. The Indian government says that the security forces are needed to keep Kashmir’s safety, even though the people feel unsafe and want their freedom from India.The article starts with a recent human rights issue in Kashmir. Asiya and Nilofa, young Kashmiri girls, had been gang raped before their deaths. They passed a gantlet of police camps to go to their family’s apple or-chard. Twelve hours later, their dead bodies were found in the stream in front of the Indian forces.However, the Kashmir police tried to cover up the crimes, and it made the Kashmiris rage at the Indian forces. This also caused street protests in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir. Roughly, 500,000 Ind decreased recently. A young Kashmiri, Majid Khan, said, “India says Kashmir is a free part of a free country. If it is so, why are we being brutalized? Why are women gang raped?”The author also talks about Kashmir’s geographical inconvenience. India and Pakistan have fought two wars over Kashmir for 62 years as a rival. In the article, the author says, “Settling the Kashmir dispute is the key to unlocking the region’s tension, something the United States hopes will eliminate Pakistan’s shadowy support for militant groups and allow its army to shift attention toward fighting Taliban militants.”The Indian government has not cared about the Kashmiri rage, and it has done damage to India’s image. India responded by saying they will reduce their forces themselves without any outside interference. In addition, the Kashmir police have worked with the Indian forces, not for Kashmiri people. The Kashmir officers tried to cover up the Indian forces’ crimes, and the Indian forces are largely pro.In the article, Meh-Booba Mufti, a leader of a major opposition party said “maybe at some point in time when the militants were in the thousands it made sense to have so many soldiers here, but at this point they are not helping in any way. Their mere presence has become a source of friction.” However, the Indian government officials disagreed and showed a decline in infiltration from Pakistan, because the number of terrorist has decreased, and now the government estimated the number of terrorists as few as 500.Unlike Indian government reports, analysts said there were other factors to lead to the decline of Pakistan’s infiltration. Pakistan and India talked secretly about Kashmir, but when the president of Pakistan lost his power in 2007, it broke down. Moreover, Kashmiri voters in December 2008 ignored separatist calls for a boycott, because they believed they could change their destiny by it.However, coming back to the story of the two girls, the author says the crime has not been wife had not come back home yet. He throughly searched a place where his wife might go, and finally a local police officer said, “Look there is your wife,” but the girls had already died, and they badly bruised. They noticed immediately something very bad had happened.Town residents gathered at the hospital for the autopsy results. Originally, a doctor said they drowned, but the people refused and were angry, because the stream was just ankle deep. A second team of doctors examined and confirmed the women had been raped. “What was done to these women even animals could not have done,” the gynecologist, who examined the women, told the crowd. Even though the girls had been raped, the investigators said important evidence had been lost, and they have not been able to find the criminals, so instead they arrested four local police officers on suspicion of a cover-up.The government still says Indian forces are needed to continue to secure the country from the militants’ violence or from a P, and they just hope justice will be done. From the article, Nilofa’s husband said “Nobody is safe in Kashmir even a child, an elderly man, a young girl. Nobody is safe.”The Kashmiris want their freedom and their safety. They fear the Indian security forces, who say, they want to defend Kashmir and protect Kashmiris. However, the Indian government says they need the security forces to stave off the danger from terrorists. The word, terrorist, can change depending on who uses it. For example, several hundred years ago, Japan invaded and ruled Korea for 40 years. At that time, Japan called the Korean liberation army terrorists. They settled their forces in Korea for the purpose of protection. Nevertheless, the Japan forces began taking common people’s property, changing their last names to Japanese, and threatening them with starvation for using the Korean language. Although Japan justified their conduct, it was not justice for Korea. The army for national independence was Korea’s hope. 1

I would like tell you about a king of korea. We call his name great king of sejong who created Hun-min- Jung=um means”which is now called 한글.한글 is korea languge. Great king of sejong was born in korea in 1397 and died in 1450. and he had reign over the 조선 (which is now korea) for 32 years. He had done many achievements. And he was well known as a swordsman, a astronomer, poet, musician, scholar, and great king. Korean is very proud of him and respects him a lot . becase he was the first king who broke the rule of social level. That time we have three classes as noble, common people and middle classes and slave. However, he didn’t care the status system. He gave all of the people as same opportunities. But nobody couldn’t blame him because he was always right and he was different with the other kings. He had charisma. So he couraged people to improve their talent. A lot of scholar created a bunch of inventions such as a sundial, a rain gauge, portable watch .but the one of his best achivements was 한글. He always listened what common people said and complained. That time the biggest problem was language. Becase we borrowed chinse characters, but it was difficult to common people and it could not fully express the words and meaning of Korean thoughts and spoken language. also The Chinese script was used by the intelligentsia of the country, So king sejong felt great sympathy for the people . he set up an organization to create our own letter. Thus. The 한글 was born. In the preface of its proclamation, king sejong states as follows: "Being of foreign origin, Chinese characters are incapable of capturing uniquely Korean meanings. Therefore, many common people have no way to express their thoughts and feelings. Out of my sympathy for their difficulties, I have created a set of 28 letters. The letters are very easy to learn, and it is my fervent hope that they improve the quality of life of all people." The statement captures the essence of King Sejong's determination and dedication to cultural independence and commitment to the welfare of the people. ,Korean is one of the countires that has the lowest illiteracy rates. I really appreciate king se jong because I can use a convenient writing system and I respect him for having taken care of his pople. So I think that king se- jong is the greatest person of all time.

“Working hard like a fool, dreaming your future like a genius.” Ban kimoon said in a statement in 2006. it is one of his famous quotation.. He is the Secretary-General of the united nations which is called the president of the world. He is one of successful people in korea and the most admired person. Actually before I searched his information I just knew about him little. It was like his name and he is kind of successful person in korea. Also I was not interested in him.However, during finding his material, I felt very shame. Because I thought he might was born in very high classes and rich family. Because he received a B.A in international relations from seoul national university which is the most famous university in korea and also earned a master of public administration from the John F. Kennedy school of Government at Harvard University. But I realized that it was just my prejudice. he has done everything by his efforts.He has never wasted his time even a minuet and he has never given up his dream.Ban, the oldest of six children, was born in Eumseoun in a small farming villeage in chungcheong. During his childhood, his father had a warehouse business, but the warehouse went bankrupt and the family lost its middle-class standard of living. they became the lower classes. So he had to help his parents, he brought garbage from the town and fed their animals early morning, and afternoon he studied and at night he exercised for his health. He has never used his time in unnecessary things.Also, he is a hard worker and honorable. He was born in small village, so he could not have chance to meet English speaker. Of course he did not have money to buy English stuff. So he studied himself. He memorized everything which is relative with English whatever, whenever. And even he found American workers and recorded their conversation and studied himself. So, That time people called him crazing Englishman, but he never stopped. He told the people he did, because he saw the English time magazine, so he really wanted to read and know what happen in the world. Even though he lived in small town, he had a vision for the world. finally he dreamed of being called a diplomatist when he met the president of america, Jone F kennedy by the scholarship of the government. He got inspiration from Jone F Kennedy. He dreamed of working in the world. Since that time, he has been working for the world.Ban’s work ethic is well documented. His schedule is reportedly broken into five-minute blocks. Ban claims to sleep for only five hours a night and never to have been late for work. During the nearly three years he was foreign minister for south korea the only vacation he took was for his daughter’s wedding. Ban has said that his only hobby is golf, and he plays a couple of games a year. A major aim(겨냥) of Ban’s campaign for UN secretary- general and a focus of his early days in office was allaying concerns that he was too dull for the job.I didn’t talk his achievement or his career because he is well-know person in the world. so most people know what his plans are and what he has been doing for that. So I just focused on how he succeed in his field with the difficulties and what he made it. His dream came truth because of his sincere, honesty and the ability of management of the time. However, the most essential part of his success is he has never given up his dream, even though he had many difficulties. He wasn’t afraid of changing. He tried to change his condition and his environment by his efforts. So His story inspired me it is time to change myself. No more hesitating. There is an old saying,” rolling stone gather no moss”. If I give up my dream, and if I am afraid of changing, there is no bright future. Let’s change.

Now 7am” to her daughter, because she wants to wake her daughter up and let her daughter go to school, but her daughter always responds “ mom please give me 5 minutes.” and does not wake up on time and they fight. After quarrelling, the mother becomes busier, because also she should go to work. Even though, the daughter does not want to go to school , she is always satisfied and happy in the school. The school is the only way to meet her friends and relieve her study stress, but also her mother is happy too. She can only focus on her work and feel secured, because her daughter is in the secured school. Both of them is satisfied with the school. As you can see the public school gives a lot of benefits to children and even their family. However, public schools and home schooling are controversial. Because, there are a lot of home schooling study and statistics, so people have recently thought the home schooling is better to their children, but it is not truth. The Public school is much better than the home schooling; there are several reasons to support the idea.The racial or ethnic distribution of California’s public school students indicates that nearly half (48 percent) identified themselves as Hispanic, 12 percent Asian, 8 percent African American and less than one percent American Indian. Less than one-third (31 percent) identified themselves asWhite or Caucasian. (national center for education statistics, 2005) Students of public schools are various ethnics, so they generally have students with a range of abilities and disabilities. As with ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic background, the diversity introduces students to the communication issues and interpersonal issues. Therefore, the public school is an opportunity to meet those people who occupy as adults with different ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic background. Also the public school students can learn how to negotiate with other point of view and understand with adverse backgrounds and valuesThe number of students in public school classroom provides opportunities that do not exist in most home schooling, from large-scale projects and team sports. Students are taught to work together and problem-solve in a group with other students, so they realize what the meaning of society is and how to cooperate with others. There is a statistics about children’s mature between home schooling students and public school students “ One study done explored the attitudes and self-assessed knowledge of Wisconsin and Maryland Pediatricians regarding home schooling. Fifty-one percent of the pediatricians surveyed, felt that home schooled children were less mature/sophisticated than their peers, 40% felt home-schooled children were equal to their peers, and 9% felt that home-schooled children were more mature/sophisticated than their peers (Klugewicz, 1999). Like the statistics, home schooling is harder to provide social interaction, so that is why homeschooling students cannot learn how to care others and how to be mature easily. They can be lack of sociality.In her famous speech, Dick cheney said “From kindergarten to graduation, I went to public schools, and I know that they are a key to being sure that every child has a chance to succeed and to rise in the world.” The public schools give same opportunities and chances to all of students, no matter what they are. Even though, some students can’t catch up their peers in classes, the schools have never let them down. The schools always cheer up them and offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities, ranging from intramural sports to a range of clubs and other opportunites. Therefore, even though, some students are not interested in studying and being at the school, they can find other things that they can do their best from the other sources with same opportunities.In her famous speech, Azim premji said “ there are millions of children today who do not attend school. However, education is the only way to get ahead in this country.” The public schools give students everything they need and support them in learning and growing to the best of their ability, there is nothing with placing a child in that environment. However, regardless of parent’s choice, the important thing is to understand what is available and the consequences of both system, because our children are our future. They should be the order of priority.

Those things make America to be the most powerful country in the world. Therefore, many people in all of the world come to America to come true “ American dream”, because they can have a lot of opportunities and benefits equally. However, before making success in America, they should know about America and Americans as what different between America and others and how American made the success. So, let’s think What does it mean to be an American? Is it having of citizenship or living in America? However, it's not just simplicity. Being an American means enjoying more freedom, diversity than any other nation and having the most powerful country in the world.The declaration of Independece, adopted on July 4, 1776, set forth a human freedom that was never before seen. The opening passage of the declaration of Independence states "…all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Many of rights as Americans are based on this sentence. Therefore, American have the freedom of speech, religion, expression, and assembly. Freedom of speech is the liberty to freely speak what one pleases. It allows them to speak publicly about the government, movies and pictures without being prosecuted. Even the president is ridiculed by some comic actor, but nobody blames them. They can’t do it, because they know how important freedom is to American. The freedom is the one of nation’ spirits that found America. Their fathers had struggled for it so long, so now American can have a lot of freedom for speech, religion, and even they can choose whether they want to be in the military.In her famous speech ,Val Saintbury ” My favorite thing about the United states? Lot of Americans, one America.” An American is a citizen of the U.S or legal resident going through the process of becoming one. It means that an American could be Korean, French, Italian or Irish, German. An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Apache. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. Americans are mix of different races, cultures, beliefs and ideas, so being an American has also meant sharing a national culture, one largely defined in racial, ethnic, and religious terms. Therefore, if someone want to be an American, the one can enjoy the diversity than other country.In his famouse speech, Dwight D. Eisenhower said “ Only Americans can hurt America.” America is the No.1 in the great economic power and military in the world. Every body can get a America citizenship but it doesn’t mean they are real Americans.
