  • Film Analysis on Blood Diamond: Cruelty behind the Symbol of Eternal Love
Film Analysis on Blood Diamond:Cruelty behind the Symbol of Eternal LoveYeji Lizzy JungIntroduction to World PoliticsDr. Morris“Africa is poor because it is rich”. I would say this contradictory phrase, but it is also a phrase that explains the reality of Africa fairly well. Also, it is exactly what the film, Blood Diamond shows. The setting of Blood Diamond is Sierra Leone in West Africa during its Civil War. Sierra Leone is abundant in natural resources, mainly in diamonds. However, the richness in diamond is said to have led to all the conflicts in Sierra Leone. Since countries and groups have been fighting over diamonds in Africa, the diamonds are now called conflict diamonds, or blood diamonds. The film, Blood Diamond stresses the brutality of the war by depicting the increasing tensions in Sierra Leone between the government and the rebel group as well as the cruel treatment of the rebel group to Sierra Leone citizens. Also, the film successfully discusses the issues of globalizaroop attacks the mine and he gets freed. Thus, he sets out to find his family, his wife and three children. Danny Archer is a diamond smuggler. He has connections with the diamond company Van De Kaap as well as people who have power in both the government and RUF. He accidently gets to know that Solomon had found a big stone. He thinks, if he gets the stone, he could pay all his debt and leave this poor continent with never-ending wars and start a new life.Taking the two people’s view, this film tries to focus on two different things through the two different characters. Firstly, it shows the brutality of the Civil War by having an innocent fisherman and his family as its main characters. They were victimized not only by the war, but more importantly, by the big businesses which sought to get their own benefits. Solomon’s son, Dia, is even captured by RUF and becomes a child soldier. The film shows how the captured children are tortured, brainwashed, drugged, and trained to kill peopleonds in the film, represents Global Witness which is an NGO for human rights. Global Witness revealed the reality of conflicts diamond in Sierra Leone. The conference in the first and last scene of the film refers to Kimberley Process Certificate Scheme. After the report was released by Global Witness, the states, industry, and civil societies gathered in Kimberley, South Africa, in 2000 to ensure that the conflict diamonds do not enter the market and that diamond trade is transparent.Relating to world politics, an issue raised throughout the film is that of globalization; the film exemplifies both the positive and negative aspects of globalization. The film shows that a big capitalistic company highly intervenes in the economy and conflicts of an African country, ignoring what kind of human rights violation and wars are happening in the area. The weapons produced by war industries in developed countries are also sold to both the government and rebel groups which worsen the conflict. H0, and it entered into force in 2002. Until now, 151 states have signed or adopted it. The most significant thing of this optional protocol is that the minimum age of conscription in international law got increased from 15 to 18. However, it does not absolutely guarantee the ban of children’s taking direct part in hostilities as well as indirect participation. Another problem with this protocol is the armed groups regardless of states. There may be armed groups which are out of control of the state like RUF in Sierra Leone. However, states did not want to be in the same legal position with armed groups, and they also did not want to admit those kind of rebel groups who might be against their countries, so in article 4, they put aside armed groups from State’s armed forces, and give obligations to states parties to take all feasible measures to prevent armed groups from using children in armed conflict.Regarding criticism on this film, some say that it just talks about the problem whicht we, consumers of diamonds are all responsible to insist the diamonds are conflict-free. It is important for people to keep paying attention to this problem since the Kimberley Process is being criticized and questioned unlike the diamond businesses insists. Even the Global Witness, which was one of the founders of the Kimberley Process, left the Scheme. Global Witness said the Kimberley Process had failed to stem the flow of conflict diamond. Charmian Gooch, the Global Witness founding directed said "Nearly nine years after the Kimberley Process was launched, the sad truth is that most consumers still cannot be sure where their diamonds come from”. In this article from BBC news, it is reported that the Kimberley Process formally agreed to allow exportation from Zimbabwe’s diamond field while Zimbabwean army was suspected to be involved in human rights violation in the mining field (Leggett, 2011).Based on the actual history in Sierra Leone, the film, Blood Diamond, reveals the realit 8

  • Political Cartoon Analysis
    A. Describe and explain the event(s) or issue(s) that inspired the cartoon. What is the larger message of the cartoon? Does the artist successfully persuade the reader? Is there a clear opinion expressed? This cartoon is inspired by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 67/19 in 2012, which upgraded the status of Palestine in UN from the non-member observer entity to non-member observer state. This cartoon describes the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly passing the resolution and the reaction of the other member states, highlighting that of USA and Israel. The artist tries neither to persuade the readers nor to express a clear opinion. He or she keeps a neutral point of view of describing this event. However, he or she intimates that the U.S. could not do so much about this result with the speech-bubble of the U.S. saying that “I feel like the observer”. Even though the U.S. and Israel has strongly opposed to Palestine’s attempt to get the status as a state, thhe U.N. but it could be passed much more easily because every vote is counted equally in the General Assembly.B. Are there any real people in the cartoon? Who are they? How has the artist depicted these people? Does the artist’s portrayal cast them in a negative or positive light? There are UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, USA President Barack Obama, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The artist portrays none of them in a negative light. However, the artist clearly shows that President Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are clearly unhappy about this decision.C. Are there symbols in the cartoon? What are they and what do they represent?By depicting the mark of the United Nations and the nameplates, the artist lets the readers know that the background of this cartoon is the UN General Assembly.D. What is the message of the cartoon? How is the artist trying to persuade the reader? The artist is not trying particularly to ed in this cartoon.F. Do you agree or disagree with the cartoonist's opinion? Why?Although the artist does not express a clear opinion, I agree with that the U.S. and Israel must be unhappy about this result because Israel occupies the territory which was once of Palestine’s, and the U.S. has been the strongest supporter of Israel.G. Does this cartoon in any way support and/or contradict some of the themes that we’ve discussed in class this semester. How? Be specific in your response.First, this cartoon is related to the theme of characteristics of statehood. To be a state, it needs sovereignty, territory, population, recognition, and domestic support. Even though Palestine has a territorial conflict with Israel, this shows Palestine obtained a certain level of diplomatic recognition by the UN.Second, it also shows the power of the Veto power of the UN Security Council. Considering that South Sudan became a member state within a week from its application for the U.S. membership, PalestAnnan to Ban Ki Moon. The issue related to this event is the North-South divide. The message of the cartoon is that North-South gap remains unsolved during the term of Kofi Annan, and now it is an agenda of new Secretary General Ban. Drawing the earth as unbalanced, the artist effectively persuades the readers to see the problem. Not a clear opinion is expressed, but the artist emphasizes the North-South divide among many other problems.B. Are there any real people in the cartoon? Who are they? How has the artist depicted these people? Does the artist’s portrayal cast them in a negative or positive light?Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General and Ban Ki Moon, current UN Secretary General are depicted in this cartoon. They are casted neither negatively nor positively. The artist just describes the succession from Annan to Ban, symbolizing it with the globe.C. Are there symbols in the cartoon? What are they and what do they represent? The Globe that Kofi Annan is holding the globe on hism.E. What impact and/or reaction is the artist attempting to trigger?By drawing this cartoon, the artist attempts to make the readers to be aware of the North-South divide.F. Do you agree or disagree with the cartoonist's opinion? Why?There is not a clear opinion of the artist, however, I agree with the assumption that the North-South divide is one of the biggest agendas of the United Nations. Many of the Millennium Development Goals, which were established to narrow the gap, have not been achieved perfectly. To work on the MDGs during the terms and to try to achieve them is the U.N.’s agenda, which will be led by the new Secretary General Ban.G. Does this cartoon in any way support and/or contradict some of the themes that we’ve discussed in class this semester. How? Be specific in your response. It seems to support “T-shirt travel”. Globalization makes it harder for the developing countries to grow up independently. The North gets richer and richer and the South gets poorer and poorer4

  • The Doctors-Pharmaceutical Companies Financial Relationship in the U.S. Health Care Reform
The Doctors-Pharmaceutical Companies Financial Relationshipin the U.S. Health Care ReformLizzy JungPOL102Dr. CochranThe Doctors-Pharmaceutical Companies Financial Relationship in the U.S. health Care ReformThe health care system has always been an issue in the U.S. politics since the former President Roosevelt proposed the national health insurance plans in 1912. Even thought a series of health care reform laws were passed in the Congress in 2010, there still remain several issues and problems in the system. One of the problems in the U.S. health care system is the financial relationship between doctors and pharmaceutical companies, which may harm the patients with the increased drug prices and overprescribed drugs. This interaction needs to be regulated by the fair implementation of the health care reform laws such as Physician Payment Sunshine Act and drug prices regulation. The opponents may argue that this interaction is necessary to provide proper information of medicine to doctormpanies which account for 40 percent of the U.S. pharmaceutical sales.Secondly, it influences the doctors’ decisions which are highly related to the patients’ health. Daniel Carlat, director of the prescription project at the non-profit group Pew Trusts, argues that doctors tend to prescribe more drugs, more expensive drugs, and more brand-name drugs rather than based on evident guidelines (Lewis, 2014). He adds that the prescriptions influenced by the relationship could be a massive problem in terms of healthcare costs and public health. A research conducted by three scholars from University of California at San Diego and University of Washington supports this argument finding that doctors are more likely to prescribe the company’s drugs which he or she is paid from. The larger the money transfers, the larger change in the prescription takes place (Engelberg & Parsons & Tefft, 2014).To make sure this relationship is under control and beneficial to the patients, the laws to regulate ths are included in the drug prices. Drug prices regulation especially on promotion fees will decrease the drug prices in general. It will be not only beneficial for the patients who are actually prescribed the drugs, but also helpful for the drug companies to focus on research and development on new products. The attempts to regulate the interaction and drug prices may be challenged by doctors and drug companies. First, they would say the interaction plays a role to provide medical information of the drugs to doctors. Many physicians are positive about their interaction with the companies since they are being informed of new available drugs and methods. They are also given free samples to be tried on their patients. World Health Organization also supported this idea by saying that drugs promotion is informational and persuasive activities (Bansal & Das, 2005). Also, in 2003, president of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, Dr. Kopelow said that pharmaceutical compt is more beneficial to regulate the frothy portion of the drug prices which is excessively being spent on promotion so that the companies can compete with lower-cost drugs on the basis of reasonably formed prices. Instead of promotion costs, in addition, the companies can invest the extra money on research and development of new drugs. The current U.S. politics itself might be an obstacle of this reformation. Even though the health care reform laws passed the Congress in 2010, the Republicans and the Democrats have been at loggerheads over the implementation. Even a government shutdown occurred in 2013 mainly because of the issue of the series of the health care reform laws. Since the latest midterm election turned out to be the triumph of the Republican Party, which has traditionally highly valued free market solutions and a small government, the future of the health care reform itself is not very certain. The economic relationship between doctors and drug companies can be beneficial. relationship between doctors and drugs companies.
