Positive Influences of TelevisionTelevision has functioned as an excellent information carrier since it was developed in the 1940s. There are two specific reasons why television is a positive influence. First, people could learn knowledge of various categories through the educational channels. Grocery store manager Harry Wang said, “Children’s educational shows such as Sesame Street are good,” he added, “and my daughter learned her ABCs from watching Big Bird and his friends.” Television provides fine information to not only the children but also the adults. Recent immigrant Jacques Camembert said, “Television is helping me and my family learn English more quickly,” he continued, “and we are learning the way Americans really talk, not ‘textbook’ English.” Second, television is a great source of entertainment and solution to stress especially for people who could not enjoy outdoor activities. Nurse Angela Russell said, “My 86 year old mother is in a wheelchair and has nothing to do all day,” she continued, “She loves watching the soap operas in the morning and the game shows in the afternoon.” In sum, television is an excellent tool of learning and entertainment.Negative Influences of TelevisionThe original function of television is providing information without restriction. But, some professionals argue that television give some negative influences on society. First, they insist that television give children negative influences. “A majority of child characters on ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox programs tend to engage in antisocial behavior such as lying or physical aggression,” reported Damon Ho, president of Parents for Responsible Programming. Dr. T. Berry Brazelton also said, “The average child today spends more time in front of a television set than they do studying in school or talking with their parents.” “As a result”, he added, “Children often learn more about the world and about values from television than from their families.” Some people argue that television is a source of real communication break. Jessica Wang, a nurse from New York said, “Television is destroying family life,” she added, “Now families just sit like robots in front of the boob tube instead of talking or playing games together.” In sum, television provides negative influences especially to children, and television also breaks the real communication.

Privacies of individuals should be protected. Job is not everything of personal life. It is only the part of personal life. All employees have right to rest after the work. Also, the off-hour is only available time for self-development and communication with family. Indeed, personal life should be prioritized than work.Second, working via smartphone in the off hours should be accepted as overtime work. It is hard and quite stressful as well as regular business. Fortunately, legal circumstance is changing in the U.S. In 2010, T-Mobile admitted the overtime work through the given smartphone, and T-Mobile paid undisclosed amount to settle the lawsuit. Also, the labor department decided to raise the salary standard that is criterion of eligibility of overtime pay, so millions more Americans will be able to bring more claims of overtime pay, similar to T-Mobile case.To summarize, working via smartphone in the off hours should be avoided as far as possible, and it should be accepted as overtime work and compensated. Now, legal circumstance is changing in the U.S. I hope such movement would settle down also in the South Korea.
