학번영어영문학과홍길동The ChooserMany people are busy to catch up with another. It almost became a common character of most people today. They choose to ‘follow’ somebody because they think that would be the safest way to survive in a society. But ‘Rita’ in Educating Rita refused copying other’s lives. She is a ‘chooser’ of her life and shapes her own destiny. This paper will review some messages that the author tried to convey through two characters in the play, ‘Rita’ and ‘frank’.Educating Rita is a semi-autobiographical play. He reflected his early life to his character Rita, Who is a working-class hairdresser in the play. Contrary to the author, Rita is a female. It seems that he set the main character’s sex as a female to effectively portray an underdog who should fight with social pressure and achieve her goal. Rita could develop herself because she became a ‘chooser’ of her life, overcome the patriarchy and made several choices that she really wanted.‘Denny’, the patriarchal character in the play, pressured Rita to have his baby. Because he pressured Rita to have a baby and become a ‘normal housewife’, Rita made her own decision to break up with Denny. Frank also shows his patriarchal attitude in the play. Throughout the first and the middle of the play, he appears to be a helpful teacher, but soon he becomes an uncooperative teacher who wants to control a girl-student as his doll. The reason why he shows his patriarchal attitude: firstly, he wanted original Rita who has vigorous individuality. Secondly, he didn’t want her to leave him. As he says “I don’t know that I want to teach you What you already have is valuable” and “what do I do when I watch you walk away and disappear?”. Rita didn’t stop studying and self-discovering despite the pressure. She decided to take the exam in normal-way, and refused to accompany with Frank. In the play, Rita keeps on changing herself and appears to be a woman who wants to enter the upper class. However, the play’s theme was not about ‘‘study hard to live a better life’ at all. In the play, Rita wanted to study literature which is objective and logical, but Frank didn’t want to teach her a literature and pursued another things, as he refused to be objective when he was teaching blake’s poetry ‘the blossom’. Frank would have done it because he didn’t want Rita to leave him, but underneath the surface, he had a ‘hatred of upper class culture’. He was sick of his life. And he didn’t think that it’s a better life compared to Rita’s life. That was the reason why he stopped writing poetry, got divorced, became an alcoholic, and was attracted to Rita. At the end of the play, Rita eventually say that ”you a good teacher” cause Frank taught her not only a literature but also that the upper class life is not a ‘better life’ but an ‘another life’. So when she realized it, she could fully understand him and forgive him. She refused his offer not because she could not understand him but his personal value differed with her value. So we can say that the theme of play is not about ‘study hard to live a better life’ but ‘pursue the own values in your life’Educating Rita successfully conveyed a message presenting only two characters. The clear contrast between Frank and Rita and contributed in conveying a central theme of the play. It makes a reader to think if he or she is being a ‘chooser’ and pursue the own values in our lives.

During the class, I happen to wonder if the Walter family members are really assimilationists. Because the plot of a play ends with moving into a new house, there is a point of view that the migration of the Walter family is assimilation to the whites Americans. But through studying, I drew a conclusion that these people are not assimilationists. The decision of walter’s family was not based on assimilational thoughts but the ‘American dream’. This paper will review some parts of the plots, and present the reasons for an argument that their decision was not based on assimilation, but the American dreamFirstly, Lena decided to move because she wanted a better place to live not to live like white people. In act 2 scene 1 of the play, mama comes back to the house and tells her family that she bought a house. When Ruth asks her where the house is, she says ‘it is Clybourne Park’, the white neighborhood. And explains why, ‘I just tried to find the nicest place for the least amount of money for my family’ ‘Those houses they put up for colored in them areas way all seem to cost twice as much as other house.’ The reason comes down. She had a ‘desire’ –since early years of her marriage- of having a new house to provide better environment to her family and herself. And her desire is somewhat logical because house was the cheapest and finest one to live with her family. this is typical American dream that every US citizen can have, and have no relation with assimilation.Secondly, the play contains a message of new afro-american movements through contrasting two charater: Joseph Asagay and George Murchison. Since the first part of play, Beneatha thought George Murchison is an assimilationist. She keeps on dating him, but eventually she breaks up with him. And also her mother agrees with her decision. However, Joseph Asagay is a contrasting character. His identity as a Nigerian is very clear and it seems that he doesn’t assimilate with any other Americans. Beneatha is persuaded with him, and she decides to go Nigeria to discover her identity. Throughout the subplot, Hansberry tried to convey her radical idea about ‘new afro American’ and this kind of theme doesn’t have such connection with assimilation.Thirdly, from the scene of ‘Lindner’, the whole family got a message from their new neighbors, and they already know that they cannot really ‘assimilate’ with the whites. But, they still want to move into a new house because they have an American dream: to live in a better, clean and larger house. Moreover, Mama’s belief in the labor isn’t changed, and they also know that their economic position won’t be changed even if they move into a new house. Therefore, Their way of life-physical labor and their culture- doesn’t seem to be changed. Finally, the symbolistic message of plant can be evidence. The plant is not only a symbol of American dream, but also a symbol of family’s belief, hard work, pride and the traditional value. In the play, Beneatha asks Mama that she will really bring her old ragged plant because the plant doesn’t match with a new house. At the end of the play, Mama hesitates to bring old plant but she finally comes back in, grabs her plant, and goes out for the last time. This can be interpreted as a strong will to preserve Walter family’s history and tradition.American dream: the ideal that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. The Walter family’s value of life has strong relation with American dream. Migration of the family is also related to American dream and it is common value of the America. This concept is not same with Assimilation, as the definition tells us about it. Therefore, migration of the family is not assimilation to a white people and the play’s main theme is about American dream of afro-american family and their strong will.
