  • death of a salesman
"I believe that the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were." Arthur Miller said. And I totally agree with his idea. We already have a character exactly fit with the theory of Arthur Miller, 'Willy Loman'. Arthur Miller said in his column that when we see a character who is ready to die to protect his or her personal dignity, we can feel the tragedy. And I think it is not quite courtly thing. Willy Loman did it. He suicided to secure his dignity as a salesman.

  • mental contrasting
Eun Hyuk LeeProfessor RohModern DramaNovember 4th, 2014Mental Contrasting – For meOnce, I was an addict of computer game. I played computer game 3 or 4 hours everyday. Suddenly, I felt that I am loser, pathetic person and I decided to quit the game. I planed how to quit the game.First, I IMAGINED, “how helpful would it be if I quit the computer game?” But it was not enough. Only imagining and thinking, I could not quit the game. At that time, I was heavy addict. Then, second, I thought some obstacles to disturb me quit the game. I always back home when my classes were over. My laptop itself was also obstacle. And game operating program which is installed in my laptop, my game ID…. All these things were obstacles. There were so many trivial, minor obstacles to disturb me. So I tried to settle them one by one. I stayed in school after my classes were over because I couldn’t play computer game at school. I erased operating program, so I couldn’t operate the game even at home. Also I got rid of my ID, so I couldn’t play the game even in the internet café or with other computers which had game operating program.Third, I thought this way, ‘If I play the game once more, I will break up with my girlfriend.’ That was perfect motivation. That was perfectly worked. In this way, I could quit the game finally. I’m not an addict anymore.Eun Hyuk LeeProfessor RohModern DramaNovember 4th, 2014Mental Contrasting – For VladimirIn ‘Waiting for Godot’ , the main character Vladimir(called Didi) and his friend Estragon(called Gogo) is waiting for Godot. It seems very easy to wait because they don’t have to do anything, just wait. But it’s very hard work I think. Waiting without purpose is very hard work. Mental Contrasting can help their waiting. Let’s follow the course.First, What is Didi waiting for? Of course it’s Godot. Didi knows it well. Didi knows what he waits. He is waiting for Godot. But Didi doesn’t know when. Waiting with no end in sight is the most hardest waiting. Didi needs another strategy.Second, Didi can imagine the bright future, the time when Godot comes. But there is a problem. Didi doesn’t know why Godot comes and why they are waiting. OMG. Didi doesn’t know what will happen when Godot comes. So he can imagine the bright future. He needs another stategy…Third, Didi can also think the obstacles that disturb his pursuit of goal. What is obstacles? Gogo? No, he is his partner, a companion to talk to. Pozzo and Lucky? They gives him an event that relieve his boredom of waiting. I think he must appreciate them. Oh, another stategy must be required. If they fail to wait, what will happen? Well, will they are unhappy if Godot does not come? They don’t know why they are waiting for Godot. I think there’s no answer to help their waiting.

  • waiting for godot
Eun Hyuk LeeProfessor RohModern DramaNovember 19, 2014Waiting for Godot – Meaningful Actions and TalksDidi, and Gogo, they are waiting for Godot. During waiting, they talk and act something. Those talks or actions seem to be meaningless. Everybody may think like that. For example, The first scene of Act2, Didi wanders around the stage, seems to be meaningless. He tries to find something, but actually he doesn’t really find anything. Sometimes Didi and Gogo, each of them are silent during their talking. Sometimes long, and sometimes short. In fact, silence and talk, they are the same because they seem to have same meaninglessness. They (especially Gogo) seem to remember nothing. In Act2, Gogo can’t remember the tree which is always standing on the center of waiting spot. And also he is in trouble to remember Pozzo and Lucky. For Gogo, it seems that the tree or other people have no meaning, they are not important for Gogo. Didi and Gogo change their hat continuously, and this also seems to be very meaningless. Also, their conversations are vacuously too long which can be done short. Same questions and same answers are meaninglessly repeated. They talk to each other just for the talk. There’s no subject of seriousness in their conversations. But, paradoxically, ironically, the reason of all of their meaningless actions or talks is evident. If you think a little deeper, you’ll find that in all of their talks or actions, there is a “goal”. Their ultimate goal is, as you already know, waiting for Godot. WATING for Godot. All they want is just waiting for him. For them, memorizing the location of tree, identifying Pozzo and Lucky, or the existence of Godot is not important. Before arguing that point, you’d better think about the process of pursuing your goal. For instance, if you want to get an A+ in certain class or get 990 point in TOEIC, what should you do? The only thing you should do is study hard. Study is the process to take your goal, get the best point. If you want to be an excellent football player, you should practice, and develop your skills. That’s the process to be a great football player. If you want to be a singer, you must sing a song a lot. You have to practice not to be nervous in front of audience. You should find a company can release your song and make a contract with it. All these things, study, develop skills, sing a song, be brave, contract with a company. . . all of them are the “process” of pursuing goals. We burst into applause to a person who does his or her best to achieve his or her goal. We really do, it’s so natural. Then, back to the play, what is the goal of Didi and Gogo? Obviously, their goal is waiting for Godot. They don’t really care about other things but waiting. So, they don’t remember the location of tree, their words they spoke, even their age. I think all of their behaviors go well toward the goal of them, WAITING. What will you do during waiting for your friend or something like that? What Didi and Gogo should do? Should they study English? Should they play football? Of course they can do but these things are not their duties. They can do everything. All of their behaviors are needed in the course of waiting, not to be exhausted or not to give up.So, what they do and speak is not meaningless bur totally “meaningful” things. Their dialogues are not out of sense actually. Of course, it can be justifiable. Throughout my lifetime, I think I never do my best to achieve something I want. I always do just moderately. Nowadays I feel shy about that. I sometimes regret something I failed to achieve because of my laziness. If I have done my best, I could have made many good things. At no time did I do my best. Thanks to this play, I learned a lot about life. “Don’t give up, and keep going” I perfectly respect Vladimir and Estragon. They deserve respect.

  • Clybourne Park writing essay
Eun Hyuk LeeProfessor RohModern DramaDecember 11, 2014Oh, Am I A Racist? – Analysis of CLYBOURNE PARKTo read CLYBOURNE PARK is the hardest work for me in this semester because it is very recent play so there is NO translated one and I’m not good at English. But I read it finally, and now I’m very proud of myself. Frankly speaking, I really don’t understand the small talking which is occurred in the first scene of Act1 and Act2. But I think I understand about important context about this story. Before I read this play, I don’t care about the race problem at all because I totally believe that I’m not a racist. But after I read this gorgeous story, I’m really moved and I deeply thought about the race problem. Also I looked back upon the past time of my life. Now I come to think of this matter, I think I looked at black people with more curious eyes than white unconsciously.Let’s go into the play. In Act1, I found a lot of discriminations against black. Discriminations are more common thanf us may think that Karl is a typical racist at that period. There are so many clues that support this idea. When Karl heard about the information of new resident, he said, “I have to say it did come as something of a shock when Don told us what sort of people they are.” He shocks when he heard black family is about to move into his community. Hamilton Park is residence of black and Karl says “there are some unsavory characters.” When Jim tries to ask a question to Francine, Karl ignores Francine with saying, “What good does that do?” I think it can also be a clue. And Karl defenses his argue with the idea of ‘difference’. He says, “There exist certain differences. People live differently.” Karl also insists that there are certain economical, qualitative differences between black and white. Karl asked Francine “Do you ski?” that actually means “Poor black can’t ski. Black can’t live in the white’s neighbor because of these economical, qualitative differences.” Karl concerns about the v they do, the value of these properties will decline. He also has an idea that white have superiority over black and says, “Suppose a number of white families started marching into their community. Well, actually that might be to their advantage. . .” Although there are prevailed discriminations at that time, I think Karl is a hard one. Other people also have a little racism. Jim is surprised when he heard that Albert has his own car. This attitude, I think it shows disrespect to black people. This is the situation of 1959. At that time black people have lower status, rights than white. And as you know, time flies. In Act2, it is modern U.S in 2009, President Barack Obama’s first year in office who is BLACK. The status or rights of black people are so much changed. It is also shown in the play. Clybourne Street became black community. And at the beginning of the Act2, there is a conflict between black(resident, Kevin and Lena) and white(new buyer, Steve and Lindsey). As opposed to Act1,whatever they want. The main conflict is like this. The white couple wants to restructure, renovate the house because the house has many cracks. And black couple opposes to white couple’s plan. Black’s argument is like, “This house is just a part of my history and my parents’ history. It has historical value.” And white’s side is like, “The house has many cracks and it have to be corrected. Historical value is not enough to persuade us.” In the conflict, black and white, both sides have the same right and they talk to each other in the horizontal relation not in the vertical one. We can see that the U.S society has been changed. Black man Kevin asks white man Steve that “do you ski?” With this view, we can even say that the situation is converted. Steve says to Lena that she is a racist. White man, to black woman. All black and white people know that racism is something bad idea. But there’s an important aspect that we should consider. In the story, there are some ‘implied’ discriminatio still discriminative factor, unconscious discrimination. All of their jokes, I think they are the examples of the character’s unconscious discriminations. And white people’s act, for instance, trying to give chafing dishes to Francine also shows some neglect. It seems like, “I’ll give this dishes that are unnecessary for me to you who can never get this gorgeous items.”I think we are all a little bit racist. According to some research introduced in the New York Times shows that people who believe themselves enlightened, are have unconscious discriminatory attitudes. These attitudes are shown in many cases, doctor’s treatment, company’s recruitment, even in some video games. Some California college students treated Obama the president and Lucy Liu an actress as more foreign than Tony Blair and Kate Winslet; actually they are British. This interesting result shows that we tend to associate American with ‘White’.Race problem is hard to be solved completely. But we can aware of our inner eve.

  • Shelly- A Defence of Poetry
Percy Bysshe ShelleyA Defence of Poetry*0The whole objection however of the immorality of poetry rests upon a misconception of the manner in which poetry acts to produce the moral improvement of man. Ethical science arranges the elements which poetry has created, and propounds schemes and proposes examples of civil and domestic life: nor is it for want of admirable doctrines that men hate, and despise, and censure, and deceive, and subjugate one another. But poetry acts in another and a diviner manner. It awakens and enlarges the mind itself by rendering it the receptacle of a thousand unapprehended combinations of thought. Poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world; and makes fa것들과 공존하는 그 부드럽고 고상한 만족감을 자아내게 하는 기념물로서The great secret of morals is Love; or a going out of our own nature, and an identification of ourselves with the beautiful which exists in thought, action or person, not our own. A man to be greatly good, must imagine in tensely and comprehensively; he must put himself in the place of another and of many others; the pains and pleasures of his species must become his own. The great instrument of moral good is the imagination: and poetry administers to the effect by acting upon the cause. Poetry enlarges the circumference of the imagination by replenishing it with thoughts of ever new delight, which have the power of attracting and assimilating to their own nature all other thoughts, and which fo his poetical creations, which participate in neither. By this assumption of the inferior office of interpreting the effect, in which perhaps after all he might acquit himself but imperfectly, he would resign a glory in a participation in the cause. There was little danger that Homer or any of the eternal poets, should have so far misunderstood themselves as to have abdicated this throne of their widest dominion. Those in whom the poetical faculty, though great, is less intense as Euripedes, Lucan, Tasso, Spencer have frequently affected a moral aim and the effect of their poetry is diminished in exact proportion to the degree in which they compel us to advert to this purpose. A little more nonsense would have been talked for a century or two; and perhaps a few more men, women and children burnt as heretics. We might not at this moment have been congratulating each other on the abolition of the Inquisition in Spain. But it exceeds all imagination to conceive what would have been the moral condition of the world if neither Dante, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Calderon, Lord Bacon, nor Milton had ever existed; if Raphael and Michael Angelo had never been born; if the Hebrew poetry had never been translated; if a revival of the study of Greek Literature had never taken place; if no monuments of antient sculpture had been handed down to us; and if the poetry of the religion of the antient world had been extinguished together with its belief.그러나 만일ch it is now attempted to exalt over the direct expression of the inventive and creative faculty itself. We have more moral, political and historical wisdom than we know how to reduce into practice: we have more scientific and œconomical knowledge than can be accommodated to the just distribution of the produce which it multiplies. The poetry, in these systems of thought, is concealed by the accumulation of facts and calculating processes. There is no want of knowledge respecting what is wisest and best in morals, government and political œconomy, or at least what is wiser and better than what men now practise and endure.
