Theory of T.S.Eliot과목명: 미국시학과: 영어영문학과엘리엇은 1888년 미국의 중서부인 미주리 주의 세인트 루이스(St.Louis)에서 아버지(헨리 엘리어트)와 신앙심이 독실한 어머니(샤롯 스턴즈)사이에서 7남매 중 막내로 태어났다. 엘리엇의 집안은 금욕과 검소한 생활의 실천을 강요하는 엄격한 전형적인 기독교 집안(Unitarian파)였으며 특히 그의 할아버지 윌리암(William Greenleaf Eliot)은 세인트 루이스(St.Louis) 에서 최초로 유니타리안 (Unitarian) 교회를 설립하고 나아가서 그곳에 워싱턴 대학까지 설립했다. 이러한 검소하고 금욕적인 분위기는 젊은 시절 종교를 불신하고 벗어나게 하는 원인이 되기도 했지만 결국 엘리엇은 영국 국교로 개종해 독실한 신앙인으로 일생을 마치게 된다. 엘리엇은 하버드(Harvard) 대학에서 문학 석사 학위를 취득한 뒤 소르본느(Sorbonne)대학에서 1년간 프랑스 문학과 철학 과정을 수료했고 다시 하버드로 돌아와 형이상학, 논리학, 심리학, 종교학 등을 연구했으며, 옥스퍼드(Oxford)에서 1년 동안 철학을 연구했다. 이러한 철학적 논리학적 연구는 엘리엇의 시 작품과 비평영역의 사상적 기반이 되었다.엘리엇은 현대영시에서 사고와 감수성에 하나의 새 시대를 연 획기적인 시인 겸 비평가이다. 오늘날 영시의 현대성을 생각할 때 제일 먼저 그의 이름이 떠오를 만큼 그의 시는 현대적이다. 지금은 현대영시의 가장 위대한 시인들 중의 한 사람으로 대접받고 있지만 그는 1910년대에 시를 처음 발표했을 때에는 그를 인정해 주는 사람들은 거의 없었다. 그 이유는 그의 시가 기존의 영시와는 다른 새로운 것이었기 때문이었다. 엘리엇의 시는 우리가 지금까지 경험해 온 시인들의 것과는 다른 종류의 시이다. 우선 그의 시, 특히 그의 초기시에서는 시인 자신이 거의 비치지 않았고, 그의 시는 개인적인 서정시가 아니었다. 윌리엄 버틀러 예이츠에게 있어서 시는 자기 자신, 즉 "전체로서의 인격"을 시에 불어넣는 것이었지만, 엘리엇에게는 "시란 인격의 표현이 아니라 인격으로부터의 도피"였다. 그러므로 엘리엇의 시를 읽을 때에는 개인적인 서정시를 읽을 때에 가지는 마음가짐을 버려야 한다그는 이런 그의 시에 대한 생각을 이론으로 만들기도 했다. 첫번째 시론은 몰개성시론(Theory of Impersonallization)이다. 엘리엇은 시에는 자기 자신이 드러나면 안되고 개성을 배제해야 한다고 주장했다. 이 이론은 감정이나 감성적인 측면을 더 강하게 표현하는 주정주의와 반대되는 이론이다. 두번째는 객관적상관물(Objective correlative)이다. 엘리엇은 시인은 표현해야 할 개성을 갖고 있는 것이 아니라 객관적 상관물을 통해 자신의 감정을 객관화 시켜서 제시해야 한다 라고 했다. 또 세번째 감수성의 통합(sensibillity)는 감성과 이성 분열시키지 말고, 주관적인 감정과 객관적인 상관물을 합치라는 주장이다. 이런 이론을 주장하는 그는 낭만주의 시인들은 너무나 자기자신의 감정에 매몰되어있고 시가 감성적이어서 싫어하기도 했다. 그래서 그는 존 밀턴을 낭만주의들의 원흉으로 보았고, 그들이 감수성의 분열을 일으킨 것을 굉장히 싫어했다. 반면에 그는 존던의 시를 보고 감탄하며, 감수성을 통합시킨 최고의 시인이라고 하기도 했다. 존던의 살아 생전 유명해지지 못한 시들이 엘리엇에 의해 발굴된 것이다. 그리고 그의 유명한 작품중 하나인 황무지(Wasteland)는 처음 그가 썼을 때는 형편없다고 생각하여 포기한 작품이었다. 그런데 에즈라 파운드라는 시인이 그 시를 보고는 몇 가지 조언을 해주고 엘리엇은 그의 조언을 받아들여 최고의 시 황무지를 탄생시킨 것이었다. 이렇게 그는 시인을 발굴하기도 하고 발굴 당해지기도 했다. 엘리엇은 시에 새로운 시도들을 해서 기존의 영시에 새로운 활력을 불어넣었고 과거의 시 정의를 깨고 새로운 주장들을 내세운 시인이었다. 오늘날까지도 그의 영향력은 어마어마하고 그의 시는 많은 사람들의 존경을 받는다.출처: 수업시간 교수님 말씀, https://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._S._%EC%97%98%EB%A6%AC%EC%97%87

Back in the 20th century, most women's role was considered as a second-class citizen who had no power at all, and was discriminated against from society. However, these days, it has changed. Now men and women almost have equal rights. Women could get this opportunity by fighting for equal rights for many years, but there are still many people who don't care about their rights at all. They all should be pulling together as a team. This paper will discuss several main causes that may affect getting people interested in feminism such as celebrities, Social Network Service, and politicians.Celebrities are one of the most influential people in the world. People pay a great deal of attention to famous celebrities about what they are wearing, what they like, or even their private life. There are many celebrities who are proud to call themselves feminists. For example, Beyoncé, the American female singer who sang the famous song “Run the world.” The song is about girls running the world not a man. Also back in 2014, Emma Watson had a speech on feminism at a United Nations gender equality campaign. The speech was so inspirational and impressive that it is remembered until now. Many celebrities very much want to motivate people to have interest in feminism. There are also many male feminists such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Daniel Radcliffe, and John Legend. These are the people that make us think outside the box. We have to get rid of Feminism is just for woman stereotype.We are living in a digital world where a vast majority of people use SNS to communicate with others. It's hard to find people who don't use it these days. Therefore, people can easily see things about feminism even without trying while they are using it. These days, it seems that posting a picture or writing about Feminism has become a kind of trend. There is a campaign for posting a picture where people wear a T-shirt with the slogan, “This is what a Feminist looks like." This was a really creative way to express their idea using social media. Anyone can easily express their idea, because of this feature, and feminism can gain strength from the people who found that they are not the only one who fights for feminism.In politics, men outnumber women like almost two or three times. However Justin Trudeau, who is the current Minister of Canada, selected his cabinet members exactly the same percentage of men and women. One reporter asked him why is it important to do so, and he said it was because it was 2015. This speech was becoming famous and has been admired from many. He had also tweeted this: "I am a feminist. I'm proud to be a feminist." His activities as a feminist helped people realize that feminism is not limited just for women. Also former President Barack Obama declared that he is a feminist by saying, "That's what twenty-first century feminism is about: the idea that when everybody is equal, we are all freer."In conclusion, feminism is a thing socially and politically nowadays. Celebrities and politicians, or just people, who call themselves a feminist, lead our society to a bright future for woman. People, who didn't know about feminism at all, now know what feminism is about because of their efforts and why they should fight for their rights. It may dismiss people's resistance about the word feminism itself and also they would think it's not a peculiar thing to do, it's as a matter of course.
