San Francisco, CA. Coit Tower gives a fantastic view of San Francisco. The views aside, of course, I was really there for the murals. Inspired by the social-realism style of the great Diego Rivera and authorized by the federal Works Progress Administration, the murals inside the Coit Tower were done in 1933; they are great fun to look at. This is because the murals were heavily influenced by Diego Rivera. According to Diego Rivera’s admirers at the Crossroads mural was destroyed by its Rockefeller Center patrons for the inclusion of an image of Lenin. After that, the Coit Tower muralists protested, picketing the tower. Sympathy for Rivera led some artists to incorporate references to the Rivera incident. In Zakheim's "Library" panel, Stackpole is painted reading a newspaper headline announcing the destru attached at the below."California Industrial Scenes"1934, Mural, fresco, 10' x 24', HYPERLINK "http://www.newdealartregistry.org/artists/HowardJohnLangley/" John Langley Howard, painter, Program: Public Work of Arts Project (PWAP), Location: Outer north wall. Description: the label attached to John Langley Howard’s 10′ x 24′ fresco in Coit Tower reads: “In this mural industry is physically portrayed, and with a powerful social and political message emerges from the mixture of visual images: demonstrating workers, the homeless, a strip mining operation, and Shasta Dam, to name a few” (livingnewdeal.org).The mural “California Industrial Scenes” was supported under the Public Works of Art Project. This program considered providing work to artists by organizing capable representatives of the profession elaborate public buildings. Working for about a year, the program supported some 3,700 artists and the making of maybe 15,000 works of art. Painter John Langley Howard (1902-1999), was a re the happiness in it. Perhaps the photo indicates the workers’ tiredness of their life. Moreover, I was inspired by a mural conveying a message for me that young generation should respect their parents’ generation ancestors more. With this mural, I experienced overlap to see my father when I was a teenager in South Korea. When my father was born during the Korean War in 1952, he spent a hard time living with poverty like other Korean people. I remember my fathers face showed exhaustion, I could see anger in his eyes, and the dusty clothing he wore back from his steels industry. The workers eyes in the low bottom of the mural seem to me looking my father’s tiredness. Therefore, Mexican American past and South Korean past are similar in that people had a hard life and were determined to uplift their quality of life.On the other hand, unlike most murals, graffiti, rather than being recognized as its own art, is often connected as hip-hop, gang, and skateboard culture. Attached on the leftat first glance when I entered into the tower. It is depicted on the right side of the entire wall of the first floor. I enjoyed how it looked and I was impressed with the sketches, which were like pictures by a camera. It has lots of detailed expressions with drawing and coloring.These above are the right side of this mural. There were a group of workers together. A worker is depicted taking a break, and using building material as a chair. It portrayed constructing turners at that moment. On the top of the mural, the artist expressed as detail as the landscape how could make harmony between nature and factory.In his “ California Industrial Scenes,” John Langley Howard depicted a group of noticeable mineworkers in the Left side of the mural. It caught my eyes. I could guess what the painter wanted to express to audience. It might state some strong reason behind through with an angry faced unemployed people.I found that on the lowest of the wall mural, under part of the unemployed peopleau of Reclamation's huge Central Valley Project, which involves 35 of California's counties” (Lopez).And next, people pan for gold in the river below the dam. So, perhaps, a point the painter wanted to show was that there exists an invisible gap between the rich and poor people. Through the Public Works of Art Project, I believe there Mexican-American could be stood successfully to communicate in creative and provocative ways of significant meanings on the murals of public buildings across the US. In fact, I was unaware of this history of Chicano murals project because until now the world historic institutions in South Korea has no specifically treating as much as entire of Asia history. Indigenism generated the indigenous people to iviously ignored accomplishments of Chicanos. This opened a new paradigm for the Mexican-American culture. Then, Mexican murals flourished in the 1920s post-revolutionary period influenced Chicano murals. However, they differed in various ways from the Mexican murals and from the 1930s New Deal murals in the U.S. In the earlier stage of Chicano muralism, it was not initially supported by the government, but it grew out of the struggle by the Chicano themselves. In particular, support often came out of grass roots sources and local businesses, or indirectly through social service and youth employment programs. While Mexican murals and New Deal murals were well sponsored and positioned in government or corporate buildings, these murals were painted in the barrios where Chicanos actually lived. Moreover, these murals were formed in the process of collaboration with local residents. Youth were especially encouraged to participate in the mural projects in considering the aspect of designing Rivera represented the public desire for change through expressed social and political satire on the Mexican dictatorship based on public resistance and sacrifice. The relation between the Mexican Revolution and these murals by Rivera was the role and meaning exposed in his arts was meaningful work in diverse ways, which was the themes involved the sense of resistance in the satirical expression to reveal between art and politics and society. He created historical paintings by democratic aesthetic and masterworks that included unattainable will against power and popular sensibility at the same time. Rivera and his art brought Mexican-Americans ethnic pride and hope for a new society.All in all, Government regarded murals as an affordable means of urban embellishment and productive youth activity.
