Along with costume and lighting, color is the most important motif in this film to show character, narrative, and themes. Red is the color that has significant meaning throughout the story. For example, the warm reddish color represents a hot summer day. Red also represents warning of conflicts pertaining to race, culture, family, siblings, generation, authority, and economics.Scene one is the introduction of Senor Love Daddy in one shot. It starts with an extreme close-up of Senor Love Daddy (lips), microphone, and alarm clock. These items are warm in color with warm lighting. The alarm clock is gold, Senor Love Daddy has dark brown skin, and the silver microphone reflects the gold alarm clock with warm lighting from the outside with 2 ocher stripes. The camera tracks backward and Senor Love Daddy is shown in a closs a prop. It gives the idea to the viewers that communication is achieved by yelling in this film later. His costume is carefully chosen like other characters in this film to show the characters’ personalities. His costume shows that he is a fashionable person in 1989. His clothing and his hat with black, red, and yellow stripes show his African American culture. There are different styles and colors of hats on window sill. The hat he wears depends on his mood and music he plays. As the camera zooms out, the viewers see a reflection of the street on the window because a director is filming the interior of the radio station from outside. This shot indicates the main narrative is going to happen on the street. The camera moves back up to the left. Craned camera rises up more to the left with one slow movement. Camera moves from the radio station to the outside of the street. As the camera moving, it becomes from a medium shot of Senor Love Daddy to long shot of “We love” radio station. T of the street in diagonal so that it results a dynamic composition. At the same time, the viewers hear Senor Love Daddy’s fast fluent speaking from off-screen.For visual continuity from scene to scene, the second scene appears from a high angle. By the director using the key color of the film with lighting from the window, he achieves coherency and unification of the scenes. Scene three has three shots without camera movement. In the first shot, it is a symmetrical composition of Smiley in front of a church in a medium close-up at a low angle. He has a radio hanging from his neck like a necklace, and he is holding photos. He is formally dressed and has a beard. Warm muted colors which are different in comparison to the other characters such as Mookie. The warm reddish artificial light and intense red church make the scene coherent with other scenes. A symmetrical composition, church, low angle, and formal costume ironically make Smiley appear as a powerful character unlike the realitym X and Martin Luther King. Instead of writing, Smiley makes describe of them on the photo with red Sharpie, which is a warning and conflict color. Although there is no camera movement, the photo is moving because his hands are shaking. Slow music coordinates with Smiley’s slow pace of speaking. The way in which his character is shot portrays him as a rigid, formal figure that conveys that he is a messenger like a prophet. This separates him from the other characters. The third shot returns to the first shot and scene three ends.The first shot of scene four is a handheld camera shot. It starts from a long shot of Mookie sitting on a foldout bed. A camera frames him slightly lower than a straight-on angle. Bumpy and jiggling, the camera quickly moves toward Mookie’s back becoming a medium shot and moves to show Mookie, counting money. This scene has low-key, over exposed back lighting which creates a hazy effect and references how humid it is. These lighting effects also create stereotyacklighting with handheld camera. Mookie is counting money in dark space. He is wearing a Michel Jordan jersey. His hair is cut short with a stripe cut down the side. This shot is in shallow-focus on Mookie with hazy background. In the background, there are props such as a radio and big fake money. The radio is one of the conflict objects from beginning to end of the film, and fake money shows Mookie desires to make money. The first shot closes with a medium close-up of Mookie turning his head to the back side. It is visually leading the viewers’ eyes towards that direction. His action creates the connections with one shot to the next; an eye-line match editing is used in these two shot. Jade is sleeping in her bed in next room. The shot is a close-up of Jade, and a camera zooms out later becoming a medium close-up with shallow-focus of the background. There is a fish tank which is a prop. Through the history, art work has been changed the styles. For example, there are naturalistic, idealistic, and stylistic representations depending on the culture and contemporary philosophy or event. Culture, idea, and event are significant effect to the art because art work is a reflection of those.First of all, Spear Bearer has mathematical formula for representing the perfect male body; that is idealized art work. Classical Greek time’s idea was that existence can be ordered and controlled with naturalism, idealism, and rationalism. Also, human ability can triumph over the chaos of the natural world, and create a balance society. Therefore, everything is in proportion and nothing in excess. Sculptor, Polykleitos, curved Spear Bearer with certain standard – Canon. Canon is regular intervals that may be expressed as ratios of whole numbers, and it is the most harmonized proportion and numerical ratio. Also, not only the ratio of body, not also the way of his standing is the most natu extraordinary one that expresses fundamental visual expression of Byzantine world. Moreover, in the mosaics of Empress Theodora and retinue, the images are stylized with naturalistic elements; although artist makes it with light and shadow on figures, garments are flat with linear quality and the way the figures standing is ambiguous, and all are in formality. This is the time when the art is devotional and Jesus is fully human and fully divine. Therefore, Theodora is holing chalice that will be devoted to God.In Romanesque (1000-1150), people regarded “the world is an only temporary, [and] permanent reality lies beyond life in this world” (Linda). Therefore, works of art did not need to be the same as the physical world; generally they are stylized like The Prophet Jeremiah. Also, Romanesque means “Roman like.” Therefore, there was a movement that follows the Roman elements in the art and architecture. “Major elements are the Roman vaulting system and architectural sculpture. Sculptuangelo’s Pieta has a triangular composition and Virgin Marry has idealized form; she looks much younger. Moreover, folds of drapery are very naturalistic.In the end of the Renaissance period, society was unstable: a plunder of Roman, invasion of Spain, a lost of economic leadership, and Reformation movement. Artists express contemporary events to the work as a reflection, and the works are “intentionally strange and shocking expression” characteristics (Linda, chapter12). For instance, proportions are unreasonably elongated and distorted, and compositions are unstable. Also, figures have the exaggerated action. Moreover, the colors are pale pink, pale blue and pale yellow which is an unusual. Madonna of the Long Neck shows those of stylized traits. Madonna’s whole body is elongated with tilted seating pose, and a baby is almost falling from the Madonna’s knees.In the Eighteenth century, there were several different kinds of movements in the art. One is a Rococo, and another is a Neo-cla realism art. However, with a philosophy, Impressionism artists really considered a light source that determined the color of object. Art work is like a slice of time or life; artists captured the impression of certain time’s scene. Therefore, paintings are quickly and roughly done with what artist see at that time. Also, edges are looks like shaking and ambiguous, but at the back we can see the sense of shapes as a whole painting. Red Boats at Argenteuil, which is done by Claude Monet, is one of the examples. Moreover, this kind of catching the impression of object painting was possible to appear due to invention of chemical pigments.In the twenty century, there were developments of intellectual technology, physics, and industrial capitalism. Also, according to capitalism, people are divided into several groups that they sought. Moreover, artists challenged of impressionism and post-impressionism, and Fauvism and expressionism established. German Expressionism has many groups accordiess mood, idea, and emotion. They wanted their art to affect not only the eye but the viewer’s inner sense.” Therefore, there is a powerful and emotional result. Two Men at a Table done by Erich Heckel with inspiration of Dostoyevsky’s writing that describes loneliness and alienation.There are so many other parts of groups in art according to technology, industry developed, and Cubism was the one of the successful and intellectual method in art. At first, it was an experimental that no one could understand what artist wanted to telling about. It is kind of stylized art because one work is created with several different view points in two dimensional plans. According to Cunningham, Cubism was birthed with three-dimensional perspective and the rule of geometry. With a Picasso, Braque was a person who developed the Cubism.
