And theory classes mainly focus on presentation and discussion.What kind of work are you working on?I’ve created works that reflect social problems and modern landscapes, and I am deeply interested in social issues that I have been experiencing in my surrounding.What are some of the classes that you'll be taking? / What are you going to study at that school?What courses do you want to take in the school?I basically love learning about new materials. So, I will actively participate in various media classes and I want to learn how to work with materials that I have never dealt with. Statement of PurposeBy Hong GildongI am a student exploring the world enthusiastically. To me, Art is the way to explore the world and motivation. When I was growing up, I had always looked for answers to my curiosity. However, as I got older, I have faced some questions that were not easy to find the answers. ‘Are human beings really selfish?’, ‘Why is the world unfair?’, ‘What can art do in this world?’. Although I used to read a number of books and watched documentaries regardless of field, there were no fixed answers to these questions. Instead, I realized that a question itself is also valuable enough. Artists are the person who throws questions to our world whether it is trivial or serious. These questions are a greatly intriguing and significant foundation to work in creative ways, also, these can push all boundaries forward and wider. I believe I can tell the newest and most amazing story to the world when I look at it through eyes of art, and this is why my ambition is being an artist who cast the most intriguing questions.This exchange program is a great opportunity for me not only to enrich my thoughts but also to share it with others who live in a different environment. At the same time, it will be a great chance to break my existing notions and grow even more as an artist by stepping out of my comfort zone. Particularly, I am confident that Academy is the most suitable school to find my possibilities.The main reason I want to apply for Academy is that the Fine Art department of this academy provides a direction I have wanted. To be more specific, the department states that studying fine art in the Academy means learning to define and redefine what art is – or can be – in relation to society. I have created works that reflect social problems and modern landscapes, and currently, I am deeply concerned about social issues that I have been experiencing in my surrounding. Thus, I think it will be a great chance to explore a new perspective about art and society and to expand my horizon by studying at Academy.I will actively participate in various stations during the exchange program and look forward to the stations provided by Academy. First of all, I want to learn how to work with materials that I have never dealt with, especially solid, liquid plastic, digital fabrication techniques in the Material Station. In addition, I would like to learn more about printing techniques such as etching and lithography in the Publications Station because printing is one of the most interesting subjects that I have ever taken in my school. If I have enough time, I want to learn about interactive sound and video installation in the Interaction Station. I basically love learning about new materials. I am constantly experimenting and exploring materials because this can be a catalyst that stimulates my imagination when I am working on. Furthermore, I am interested in how different media can intervene and influence each other, specifically, combining traditional materials and new techniques in.Blue City Lap is the station I am most expecting in. I am very concerned about the environment, especially on the side effect of using plastics and meat consumption. I believe that artists can find another insight into these problems distinct from scientists or ecologists. We have to find and analyze the basic structure of problems to solve it fundamentally. Many times, it seems like the world already exceed the limitation of self-purification. I think the imagination of artists and data of researchers need to co-work to solve the problems. To get closer to the solution, I put myself into practicing a vegetarian diet and plastic-free, and this is why I am interested in Blue City Lab. I am eager to work in the field where the collaboration between arts and social or natural problems exist.In the same context, I am also interested in Social practice, because the object of the practice is to keep asking what artists can do to change society and how it effects. Especially, the New Earth is the class I am most eager to learn. I would like to learn how to raise attention to climate change and sustainability and what kind of actions artists can do to reform the structure of the problems.I think Academy provides the most plentiful studies, and I am really hoping to participate in it as much as the time allowed. I am expecting to be part small or big events which are outdoor classes, classes with a theme, exhibitions in galleries, and creative events led by students. I am pretty sure that rich curriculums of Academy will give a lot of inspiration to me, and when I finish the exchange student program, I am going to be able to move forward to next step to find the answers of all the questions.Thank you.
