Genetically Modified Organisms: The Double-Edged SwordFew debates on worldwide industry are as heated these days as the foods that contain genetically modified ingredients. It is an issue that every person needs to apply their mind to. Consumer choices, health and safety, the environment, and justice towards the Third World are all at stake due to the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). As public debate about the desirability of genetically modified food mounts, the sense of what science means to our own health and the health of the planet grows more important. One of the main arguments in support of Genetically Modified Organisms is that they are the best option to feed the world’s growing population and greatly enhance the nutritional value of crops. Without this remarkable technology, the earth will run out of resources and starvation will become an endemic. Despite the potential power of GMOs to feed the ever-growing population, critics argue that all potential ecological to be the solution to the agricultural problems of the Third World. New hybrid rice strains, for example, gave yields two to three times higher than traditional varieties. In the developing world as a whole, wheat and rice production increased by about seventy five per cent between 1965 and 1980 (Hanson 54). This was of immense benefit to Third World populations. For example, the use of hybrid seed varieties also enabled the production of the seventeen most important crops in the U.S.A. to increase by over 242 per cent between 1940 and 1980, on an increased area of only three per cent (Hanson 56).However, from 1984 onwards, yields declined, and it was realized that yield increases come at a price. The high-yielding crops of the Green Revolution required high inputs of agrochemicals, particularly fertilizers, to achieve their potential yields, and were therefore more expensive to grow. The aim was to increase output, with little concern about limiting inputs. They also required more wament, transgenes may be impossible to eradicate.Micro-organisms present particular challenges, because of their rapid reproductive rate, their willingness to exchange genetic material, and the difficulty of detecting them in the environment (Nottingham 81). One of the major ecological concerns with genetically modified organisms entails the risks posed by virus-resistant crops. During continuous research about the side effect of GMOs, researchers found out that unique ecological risks have been associated with virus-resistant transgenic crop plants (Nottingham 70). These transgenic crops have sequences of viral nucleic acid integrated into the plant genome. Resistance to cucumber mosaic virus, for example, was obtained in crops by transferring a gene sequence from satellite RNA, which is a structure in the virus that can reduce viral symptoms. However, under some circumstances satellite RNA can exacerbate rather than reduce viral symptoms. This was observed in Italy in 1996, when a natn the potential of genetic engineering to feed the world. Despite the advantages of GMOs, the potential risks of GMOs and Europeans’ negative attitude toward genetic engineering in food have caused Third World countries to oppose the adoption of GMOs as well. Most African governments are still skeptical about GMO crops due to concerns about food safety, the environment, and the general public mistrust of multinational markets that are often seen as manipulative and unscrupulous (Paarlberg 20).Facing the inherent resistance toward the GMOs in the Third World, the biotechnology industry needed a miracle to resuscitate the image of GMOs. That miracle came in the form of a golden grain of rice when Ingo Potrykus, a professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, succeeded in engineering the pathway for vitamin A into rice. His genetically engineered golden rice held out the potential for preventing disease and death among millions of the world’s poorest people as well as owever, it must have public acceptability, economic feasibility, and a workable legislation framework. This potential may be threatened if a rush for short-term profits, prompted by corporate greed, leads to abuse of the technology. This could have adverse effects on the whole area of new biotechnology, including developments in the Third World.If genetically modified organisms are to make an important contribution to food production in the future, it should be as a result of open debate and widespread cooperation between industry, academia, and governments. The potential risks of genetic pollution of the environment and risks to human health require that the GMOs are closely monitored. Society must take responsibility for regulation and use value judgments to decide how the technology is used. Market forces should not be the sole factor determining how the technology develops.
