Continued attention has been paid to cornea and the anterior segment the animal eye. Through these studies, I have the capabilities to use and handle the imaging devices, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), which is most important equipment for imaging the cornea and the anterior segment of the eye.Through this project, I would like to clarify the cause of corneal endothelial dystrophy (CED) in dogs and find a treatment method. Currently, about 10 to 15% of elderly dogs who visit “name of facility” suffered from corneal dystrophy. Although such a large number of patients suffered from corneal dystrophy at present, only symptomatic treatment is being performed. Therefore, through this training, I would like to find a way to help the regeneration of endothelial cells or to transplant endothelium.My final goal of this postdoctoral fellowship is to develop “future study topic”. There are many difficulties before implementing a corneal transplant because eye banks have not been activated worldwide, it is difficult to find a corneal donor, and there are ethical issues involved. Therefore, through this training, my final goal is to find easier way to “final goal”. The artificial corneal endothelial cell is thought to be able to sufficiently reduce cost and time in patients who need corneal endothelial cell transplantation in dogs as well as in human.
