BRANDEIS UNIVERSITYGRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCETHE AUTHORSHIP OF THE SONG OF SONGSSUBMITTED TOPROFESSOR’s NAMEIN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OFAPPLYING TO PH.D IN NEAR EASTERN AND JUDAIC STUDIESBYFIRST AND LAST NAMEDATE1. IntroductionThree names – The Song of Songs, The Song of Solomon, and Canticles – have all been given to us as the name of this book. The book’s uniquenessin terms of style, word play, and structure and uncertain points of ongoing scholarly debate such as the date it was written, a canonization in certain religious communities and interpretation have made it a frequent source of lively debate among scholars. While this paper focuses on only one of the issues the authorship of the book, the singular issue is strongly linked with other major issues such as the compositional date or the unity of the Song; these other issues have been hotly debated among scholars. In order to achieve the goal of examining the Song of Songs’ authorship, this paper will pay close attention t the text includes a variety of grammatical forms that seem closer to Mishnaic Hebrew than classical Hebrew; he argued that these features were proof that the book was written fairly late. Fox also follows Duguid’s argument, claiming that the Song of Song’s language is certainly is no earlier than the Second Temple period, stating “the explanation for the linguistic character of the Song involving fewest unsupported assumptions is that it was composed in the period of transition between classical biblical Hebrew and mishnaic Hebrew.” Brenner follows these other scholars, claiming that the Song could not be dated as an earlier composition because it uses the first person pronoun ’ny throughout, which is used exclusively as the first person pronoun in later biblical and post-biblical language, rather than the earlier ’nky. Based on the usage of these pronouns, Brenner concluded the Song could not be dated to Israel’s early period, because late texts may naturally contain earlier featuresDuguid alludes to having a skeptical view on it by casually asking the question ‘could such poetic forms be preserved unchanged for over a millennium in Israel?’ To this question, he adds the assumption that the poetry would have been influenced more by Greek form if it were substantively post-exilic. The existence of literary relations between Hebrew and Egypt, however, can be supported with the thorough researches done by a number of scholars who argue that Solomon is the author of the book. Even Keel who argues against Solomonic authorship, insists that the collection most nearly fits between the eighth and sixth centuries B.C it is because that at that time ancient Egyptian love literature was still flourishing and ancient Near Eastern motifs were enjoying a final heyday in Israel. Here is where I locate my analysis on the issue of comparing the Song of Song’s literary features with ancient Near Eastern love songs in the last part of this section.Garrett has confidence in Solomon’s love in the Song of Songs display a striking correspondence to the language of the Egyptian lyrics such as illustrating a pastoral, expressing desires and fancies of lovers, the purpose or usage of songs, and forms of dialogue. As Garrett notices that these similarities between Egyptian love poetry and the Song of songs, however, do not necessarily require us to have the same way of interpretation. As having the discerning ability to those characteristics of ancient Near Eastern love poetry, we could have a better approach to the Song of Songs, in particular with the illumination of Egyptian poetry’s structure, setting, meaning and genre.In summary, by examining the literary styles that most closely with the text’s linguistic aspects, it is clear that the Song of Song is one of the most elaborated and polished example of literature not only in the history of Israel’s literature but also in the ancient Near Eastern. Some scholars’ thorough analyses of the Song of Songs in comparison wior him to have composed a song about the one pure love song if he is the genuine author of the Song. It means that when he wrote the book in old age after experiencing all sorts of hardships and love then it might be the reflection of his life and love, and he is writing pedagogically for the next generations about ‘true love’. If he composed it as a young man, before he had a notorious reputation with women, then it would be also rhetorical lesson for the younger generations. Thus, it seems to be unreasonable to deny Solomon’s authorship based on his desires for women.1.7 Recent authorship studyPresently, there is a growing tendency to attribute the Song of Songs to a female author or authors. My goal as a scholar is to approach the Hebrew scripture not as a text superior to other manuscripts, but with an impartial eye and appreciation for analyzing textual sources. The impact of the history, languages and culture of the ancient Near East on the formation of the Hebrew scripture cannot be overemphasized. In this sense, the Near Eastern and Judaic Studies program at Brandeis University is the ideal academic environment to cultivate my scholarly abilities and to explore countless facts through observing discrepancies between manuscripts and analyzing possible explanations.During the M.Div in Old Testament with Dr. Robert B. Widbin at Alliance Theological Seminary, I had a chance to investigate relevant texts about the Solomonic Temple and palace depicted in the Hebrew scriptures, 1 Kings 5-7 and 2 Chronicles 2-4. I was particularly struck by the fact that its structure and decorations are analogous to those of other regions. This observation sparked my realization of the impormacroscopic perspective. This naturally led to interest in how the Israeli kings’ domestic economy and diplomatic issues were converged and expressed in historical documents. Furthermore, the subtle differences found in the accounts detailing the temple project aroused my interest in comparative textual analysis between Kings and Chronicles. From this moment, I have approached my studies of the Hebrew scripture and ancient Near Eastern world through the lens of history-critical method and have employed a critical methodology to explicate on source criticism, which has, in turn, led me to a world of academic inquire beyond my own hypothesis.My experience, as a Lieutenant in the Korean army enabled me to experience firsthand the workings of political and hierarchical powers. In addition, studies in Economics and English literature during my college period allowed me to comprehend the literary representations of ancient leadership and international trades present in Hebrew scripture as coon the historical books, biblical poetry, and prophetic literature, I was trained to engage with different literary genres of the Hebrew scripture. During this period, my primary interest and perspective on the Hebrew scripture became narrowed to two trajectories. Firstly, I pursued an in-depth apprehension of the Hebrew manuscripts and the ancient Near Eastern world and its social context, especially as they relate to politics. I regard the account of 2 Sam 17 in Hebrew scriptures as evidence of a dynamic world where political affiliations which were matters of heated dispute among partisans that are recorded in Hushai and Ahithophel’s account.Secondly, I learned the importance of approaching to the text with redaction criticism which is crucial in accounting for laconic and tacit Hebrew scripture about content that is not considered important by the editor's perspective particularly during the process of being codified, as well as accounting for international affairs in the ancient Ner, I posited that texts were witnesses to inter-dynastic relations which are directly indicated by exotic products and analogous literary structures between ancient countries, particularly with Egyptians’ love poetry. Through this intellectual pursuit, issues like comparing a Hebrew literature with the ancient Near Eastern world’s it, via textual redaction criticism, analyzing cognate languages, and tracing among international trade have become fascinating subjects to me. In particular, Solomonic era, a period that witnessed the flourishing of international trade and cultural exchange, as these topics engage my interest in period-specific pervasive political practices. Consequently, those practices seem to affect successive kings’ political position toward neighboring countries.Therefore, if I am given the opportunity to study in the doctoral program NEJS at Brandies University, I would like to continue my research of reorganizing of Hebrew historical records of Israel kings from a poround of the ancient Near Eastern world and the knowledge of ancient Egypt in particular. Additionally, beyond Israel’s issues in Hebrew scripture, I am interested in considering laws, social structures, and ritual practices that are recorded in multiple and diverse sources, particularly in Egypt and Mesopotamian literature. Brandeis University’ intellectual resources and guided mentoring will enable me to reconstruct ancient Israel’s politics.I am convinced that the doctoral program NEJS at Brandeis University will offer me the most holistic access to scholars and relevant resources. Studying under the guidance of professor David Wright and Tzvi Abusch, on biblical and Near Eastern ritual, law and history, and Northwest Semitics and biblical and Mesopotamian interconnections, will provide me with excellent experience of scholarship on textual issues. My plan following the completion of study at Brandeis is to research and teach ancient languages, social context, life issues of the ancn.
