My younger sister just recently got herself the Samsung Anycall Haptic phone. Yes, the ‘it’ multi touch screen phone that reacts to touch (haptic feedback), supports HTML browsers, video and TV (DMB)play back, 2 megapixel camera, and Bluetooth. Oh my. The $800 phone she said, was a ‘smart investment’ for herself. I said to myself, technology is definitely something these days but $800, isn’t it too pricy? Then I thought over and realized, if she were to try and buy all those things individually, it would cost her a fortune. Yes, it was indeed a smart investment I thought as I shuffled through my music files on my new Ipod nano that supports TV shows, movies, video podcasts, and of course music.
We are living in an era of technological convergence where everything is coming together as one. As the above anecdote illustrates, we are witnessing a convergence of technologies and new forms of communication. The term ‘technological convergence’ has been going on for a while-around two decades- yet still lacks a universally accepted definition, even its own definition is converging and overlapping! Some cross use the term with digital convergence. Technological convergence is changing the nature of communication, consumption, work and leisure; and, more important, it brings benefits and opportunities as well as challenges and threats to the business world and society.
