1. Introduction
1945. 08. 15, Korea was liberated from Japanese Imperialism. But Korea was not utterly free from two powerful countries, the United States and the Soviet Union. Moreover, the US department of state, the US Army military government, and the Left and the Right parties struggled for supremacy in South Korea.
Rhee Seungman was the final winner of this complex political field in South Korea. He became the first president of Korea and fulfilled his political ambition. But current reputation of Rhee Seungman is controversial. Somebody said he is a father of the country, the best independence movement person, a real man of diplomatic talent. But the other said he is pro-Japanese, an opportunist, and a president who abandoned his people.
In this presentation, I would like to show his political activities in 1940’s. We could judge him by these records.

2. Rhee Seungman’s political activities in 1940’s
In 1910, Rhee had a doctor`s degree at the Princeton University, and from 1910’s to 1930’s he did political movement in the US. So his political movement inclined to the US. He spent his whole political ability especially in diplomacy. However he had no real diplomacy achievement before the Independence day of Korea (1945. 8. 15.), because his diplomacy method was not popular in South Korea, and his political support as a base was lower than other politicians.
