Japan is a country that has long had appeal to foreigners, and modernists in
the West have been greatly infuenced by the traditional Japanese way
of life. Simplicity, functionalism, and minimalism three of the most
important elements of Japanese design have been appreciated, since
the 19th century, and reinterpreted by Western designers and archi-
tects. (Slesin, Cliff and Rozensztroch 1)
The “Japanese aesthetic” was immerged from its history, culture, tech-
nical triumph and religion. Zen Buddhism has had one of the most
infuential forces in the rise in which it became today’s design power-
house. Zen is a crucial contributor that infuenced the way of life in the
Japanese culture in terms of its mythology, architecture, food, ceremo-
nies/rituals and many of Japan’s renowned unique style. Japan is, and
still is the design one of the most infuential countries to the west and
rest of the world.
Briefy, Zen is derived from the Chinese (Chan) Buddhism, which frst
started in India. It was introduced into China in the frst century A.D.
through the medium of Buddhist teachings. It was later on, after China
and Korean, that Buddhism arrived to Japan and started to bloom as
one of the common religions with it frst being adapted by the samurai
class.
There were some aspects of Buddhism in the forming which it came to
China that the people of the Middle Kingdom did not quite kindly cher-
ish: for instance, its advocacy of a homeless life, its transcendentalism
or world-feeing and life-denying tendency, and so on. (Suzuki 3)
When Buddhism went into Japan, people absorbed and altered the
ideas of Zen into their own. Possessed of no written scriptures, its su-
per logical doctrines diffcult to grasp, and fnal enlightenment within it
attainable by very few, Zen nevertheless presented tenets understand-
able enough to from a practical discipline of art.
Simplicity, restraint, and the elimination of the insignifcant were among
the obvious requirements of Zen. Zen is discipline in enlightenment.
Enlightenment means emancipation. And emancipation is no less than
freedom (Suzuki 5).
