According to Stephen J Page and Joanne Connell (2006) ‘Tourism a modern synthesis,’ tourism has developed last 200 years as people consider that traveling is a necessity. However, it is regarded as old as human activity due to the fact that people have traveled for many different reasons throughout history. Accordingly, the development of tourism in the Grand Canyon area will be examined throughout history with the number of visitors and issues which is reasonably related to tourism. In the late 19th century, copious mineral resource was found and arouses the people’s interest because residents needed to find something profitable industry which contributes their better life and need (NPS: nature & science). However, early residents recognized that there is another potential industry which is tourism. For that reason, the residents turned their mind to make Grand Canyon as a tourism destination which is more profitable than mining and it became a well know tourism destination by the turn of the century. Furthermore, opening Grand Canyon rail way in 1901 contributed the accessibility which is a basic need for tourism. Furthermore, at this point of time, there was a dramatic increase in tourist facilities such as the luxury E1 Tovar Hotel on the south rim in 1905 and Phantom Ranch in the Inner Gorge in 1922 at Grand Canyon village (Bob Ribokas ‘Grand Canyon Explorer’).
