Humans cannot live alone, especially in modern times, because people cannot live in self-sufficiency. Because people choose professional jobs, they depend on other people for living. Because humans have to live together, other people’s views or ideas can influence someone’s thought or behavior. The social pressures can influence especially the young people’s behavior, because the time of the youth is very important for forming personality and choosing the young people’s future. As a result, this social pressure destroys the young people’s own individualities and makes them have the same thoughts, behaviors and futures. Humans cannot live alone. People should supplement what they lack with other people’s contributions. However, people cannot supplement each other if all people are the same. The society cannot be developed, and might collapse. In two works of literature, John Updike’s story “A & P,” and Marge Piercy’s poem “Barbie Doll,” we see that the young people are subjected to social pressures, and feel they are forced to make choices. If the social pressures make the young people follow the standard, the society will not be developed and will remain the same forever.
