The author `Ernest Hemingway` got spain on his journey. he liked to sitting at a cafe in spain. this experience became a setting in the story. and the writer suffered from the nothingness entire his whole life. so the Nihilism reflected in this story.

`daytime` : It symbolizes the complicated world that many people lived together. and the daytime help people to forget their loneliness.
`the night` : It symbolizes the people`s own world that they feel they lived alone. and the night stimulated the people`s mind and emotion. so the characters in this story feel lonely and nothingness.

I focused on the symbols of the temporariness.
1. The electric light : It symbolizes the struggling that the human struggles to free from the loneliness and the nothingness. The writer emphasizes the electric light, not the natural light. To free from the loneliness, nothingness and the fear of the darkness that feels at night, human created the electric light. But this creation can`t over come the nothingness and bring out the other nothingness much bigger that the first one. the electric light is the temporary symbol as the light that has to die out and can`t stay eternally. thus I think, people can`t over come the nothingness through this light but get the bigger one.
