Chapter 1: Maxim de Winter

Maxim de Winter is a hero of the story, who owns Manderley, a lovely country house by the sea. At Manderley, the trees had thrown out new low branches which stretched across the long way. He has a house-keeper , Mrs Danver, which has no good relationship with the new Mrs Winter, and a sister, an ancient grandmother, a servant who cares business affairs, a dog named Jasper.


Chapter 2: Manderley

When Mr Maxim de Winter and his new wife arrives at the Manderly. It was a early May then. All the house work was done by the servants, named Mrs Danver, who does everything. Mr Winter says to his new wife, just leave it all to her. She`ll be stiff with you at first, I expect. She`s an unusual character, but you mustn`t let her worry you. Run along and make friends with Mrs. Danvers. It`s good opportunity.


Chapter 3 : The cottage in the Bay

Mr. Maxim de Winter had a bad memory about the cottage in the bay where his wife was died. Maxim went through a terrible time and he tried to forget about it. Maxim`s sister Beatrice told Maxim`s new wife about Mrs Danver. Mrs. Danver is so jealous. Maxim doesn`t seem to be particularly fond of her. Mrs. Danver dislike your being here at all. That`s the trouble. The truth is Maxim loved Rebecca very much. And if you had my memories you would not want to go there either, or talk about it, or even think about it.


Chapter 4. The shadow of Rebecca.

The next day I met Frank Crawley on the drive. Frank Crawley told about the cottage in the bay. Rebecca would like to go in the moonlight swimming. Was that boat she was sailing when she was drowned? Rebecca was found at the Edgecoombe about sixty kilometers up in the coast. Maxim went up to there to see the body and he recognized her. Even though Rebecca died, it still remains in his memories.
